  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KETCH ROSSi

Ketch,

Wicked rig. Will be great to see the R90 in action too.

Changing midstream here: what would you recommend by way of reflectors?

Best and thanks.

I am constantly adapting various components and pieces to create the perfect rig set up for each individual shooting need, love this camera!!

The R90 rig set ups, will be soon showed, including some crazy trials on a shoulder rig... ;)

As far as Bouncing reflectors, I have tried many, and really all are okay, but I found that the "Sunbounce" ( http://www.sunbounce.com )line of reflectors and nets, are by far the better ones, they have a good quality texture, and amount of reflection, a great frame, which is also what keeps the reflective material tensioned, therefor allowing for a better overall reflection, for this reasons they are my favorites, even so the pricer ones.

Cool, how everyone seems to have taken one of everybody's favorite shot.

This one, which opens all of our 15, 30, 60, and 90 second edits was taken by Ketch... ;)

How do you get your hands in there to pull focus mate... ?

Here you go Mark, even so this is only one of 4 configurations used, this is the one I use my self, were I either place the actual lens Gear on the right, or left as it is in the pic below illustrated, but we also use the actual Knob on the opposite side with a whip, and or mount the actual EVF mount on top of the camera instead of under the lens.

How is your EVF is it stobbing or now? Ours is, at a state where DP's ask whats wrong with it. We normally shoot 25fps and it's really stuttering.
Also I think it it's worth mentioning that the CFF-1, is at least to me, one of the few manual FF systems that work well with the epic and side handle and the EVF. The way it can extend and fold down the focus nobs makes it really one of a kind.

Off topic question. Ketch, do you have poor sound quality if you connect mic's into the 1,2 inputs in the front of the camera. We only get sound with some blurbing background noise in those inputs first I thought it was the fan but then testing with a long cable microphone and still had the issue. workaround have been to use the pro I/O instead. But that eats a bit to much battery and adds a bit to much weight when just wanting the sound as a scratch track... Figure that you been trough all this and maybe you had a better solution...

Never experienced any issues, to specify, we never shoot 25fps, but 24, 48 and 96fps.

Yea we love the CFF-1, and sold both FF4's, this is just perfect for what we do, so many choices of mounting and extensions.

As for sound Björn, we never record sound via front camera inputs, not even to match sound or dialogue in post, at list we haven't yet, only recorded sound via external Pro system with Sound crew, or via the Pro I/O, before selling it, in view of the Meizler I ordered, unfortunately now delayed, I should have hung on to the Pro I/O a little longer... ;)

Is the rubber donut comming with the tangerine or is that something you bought separate. Need something like it for our redmattebox.

That is the 138mm Circular Rotating Tray, for the Polarizer, and yes, on the Strummer, my model, it does come with as part of the kit, since this is the Top of the line model.

Much appreciated.

That shoulder pad looks comfy... how do you find working on that rig compared to the regular clutch in terms of weight distribution and mobility?

Actually that Pad is not comfy at all, that is one of the things I din't like about the ET Mantis, but what I did like about is the fact of the adjustability of the Pad holder, and the only reason I use it, as I have yet not found any other shoulder pad systems, that allow for =the dovetail adjustment, and since i have about a 45 degree angle on my shoulders do to the mussel built, I didn't get to enjoy the Clutch, but miss it all the time for all the other settings and infinite capacity to adjust in all other ways, so the only reason I sold it was because I could not adjust the Shoulder Pad, and created the one in the pic by mixing parts form the Clutch and the Mantis, but still looking for the perfect shoulder pad, so at the end I think that we'll end up also building one, just as soon as our Lab is done, which unfortunately might not be too soon.

I wondered about that. A larger pad seemed at the outset to be a good solution, but the fitting of the clutch helps distribute weight in between the shoulder and back. However, to your point, it would be great to add additional/adjustable cushioning to the top of the shoulder, having switched to using RPP's I have noticed the need for extra support.

And from what I hear the MP's must be taxing on the upper body... but glorious to shoot on!

Custom built would be ideal.

Yes no matter the type of Shoulder Rig chosen, a proper Padded support for the shoulder with a Swivel system of the actual Pad it self is key to a perfect system, as we not have all equally horizontally aligned shoulders, and especially as we go heavy with bigger lenses such as MP's RPP's etc.

So for now my search continues... Till I design and build my own... ;)

FYI I replaced the original ET Mantis pad with a memory foam pad I had purchased for neck support while traveling. Huge improvement. BTW, the ability to change the angular relationship between the human shoulder and the level/axis of the camera in dimensions is the critical bit of the ET Mantis design. Just my 2 lira on Ketch's thread... ;-)

Cheers - #19

Thanks Blair, I have also changed the foam, as the one provided on the Mantis Pad is simply a joke, but we both do appreciate the only thing good about the Mantis design, its flexibility of the shoulder level to be adjusted, all else is no good for me on the Mantis, this is why I use RED handles and Collarbone, which also can be used in combination of other extension pieces of the Clutch to make the handles lower or longer.

Ketch,

Hello my friend, hope all is well and you are enjoying the Holidays! Probably working harder than you should but for good reason.

Looking for a bit of advice.

For those super smooth pans/tils, you were using a GEARNEX head?

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?91125-Gearnex-v-2-for-sale

Is this the same one?

Hi Will, yes, no Holidays for me this year, way too much work, and since I am alone any ways, I'll just take advantage of it and work some more... ;)

So far, of all that you might have seen of my work, none was filmed using the Gearnex gear-head, other then the very first Beauty Film shot with my buddy Sergio, all other work across the glove have been done on my all portable Miller Compass 25, on a Gitzo Carbon X sticks.

However, you'll soon see my next Fashion Films, using the Gearnex Gear-Head, and yes, it surely can make a huge difference, even so I like to think of my self to have a good hand in motion, and of course the fact of being able to carefully calculate and properly set balance of gear on your head, as well as proper dampening and or friction to your Pan and Tilt adjustments, will help a smoother camera movement, but once you get to master the Wheels on a Gear-head its hard to do without, unless of course like me you do lots of shooting in travels were you can only carry so much.

So the one for sale is the same you recommend?

Yes, they made a V2, same unit but upgraded with some internal smoother components, make sure that is the case, and confirm that with the guys at Cinetoys, also make sure to ask for current price in the new before making an offer on a used unit.
