  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

June Update

Interesting. I checked with dealers a loooong time ago and every single dealer (I actually emailed every single official dealer on the red list) told me they didn't order any cameras from RED that didn't already have a deposit from someone so it didn't seem to make sense since it would have been exactly the same as putting it in directly through red.

Yeah, but one thing that does have an impact is if someone jumps ship. I ordered through a dealer and began roughly 3 spots behind their original bulk order. Two people have jumped ship and one is on the edge right now, so if s/he decides to get a refund on their deposit and go elsewhere...I will get bumped into the original bulk order. Could be a difference of many months.

OMG this month had absolutely no updates besides the very first one.

It is indeed a "monthly update".

From what I can see on Facebook in particular is a slew of new Raven owners receiving their cameras. I saw a few Weapons and a couple of Scarlet-Ws pop up earlier in the month as well.

We also saw the first RED Weapon 8K VV Anamorphic brains sent out, which feature the full 8K sensor with the sides "masked off" for anamorphic only filming at 8K and spherical motion around 6.5K.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 wrapped this month. Hopefully (fingers, toes, and intestines crossed) Weapon 8K bodies begin to drip out.

That's just me aggregating information from social networking, but it appears they've been going out at a steady pace overall.

I think this is what a lot of us are curious about. Some people were allocated in April, held off for the May halt, and then got their cameras in June... but a lot of us have been on the lookout for new allocations of Scarlet-Ws and it seems about as quiet as May was. Just doesn't quite feel like the message to Scarlet-W customers in the first post of the May update: "I promise we will come back to you and hit your que with the same passionate vengeance after this."

Of course, I know there are a ton of customers and not all of them use Instagram, Facebook, REDuser, etc. So cameras could be going out that we don't have any way of seeing.

That's because there haven't been any new allocations of Scarlet-Ws, according to m rep. They've only delivered cameras allocated before the halt. I don't know whether or not any of those allocations were for preorder customers rather than or switchers though.

I thought from IMDb that the avatar series was also 8k, also any of the big guys shooting anamorphic that need the full height of a 35mm ... So I wonder how many of the hard core A level guys are waiting that don't comment on reduser(I am guessing 100 more cameras). Seems the 8k production shoots are way more secretive then in past red sensors releases too, I don't see anything public on normal 8k productions.

Yeah I haven't heard of any scarlet-ws being delivered that weren't allocated in April. It's pretty obvious that there's some kind of delay at this point. Hopefully not serious.

Avatar 2 (and perhaps the other 3) are likely a Weapon 8K productions (3D as well), but I haven't seen a start date from Fox yet. Still in Pre-Production from what I understand. It's being released sometime in 2018, so they aren't totally under the gun yet.

There's definitely been interest by a few more features to be shot on the 8K. Hence much of why Panavision has pushed so hard to co-birth the DXL.

Generally speaking large budget features and commercial projects are extremely secretive until the marketing push kicks in or it's released. I've now worked on 3 major commercial productions that started well in advance of the product being announced. Over a year in a couple of those cases. Nobody likes a good idea being stolen or spoiled. The interesting thing regarding GotG V.2 is Gunn is very fan friendly and communicates on a variety of levels, right down to live streams and sharing rough storyboard thumbnails (which don't reveal too much luckily). Usually there's studio clearance and publicity concerns regarding much of this, but there are times when openness can be fun.

I wrote up much of my thoughts regarding the 8K Dragon sensor and anamorphic filing in the PV DXL thread, but it's certainly a crazy exciting format for anamorphic filming due to the sensor's height, and for lower anamorphic squeezed ratios, the width as well is great.

Avatar 2, 3... 4... 5 and so on will probably be postponed further. It feels like a project that will just go on and on until cinema is no more and everyone left the planet in search of a real Pandora. :tongue_smilie:

I worked on the very small team who designed and developed the facial capture rigs on Brother Termite which led to Jim's efforts on Avatar. In passing conversation with him he simply decided that he wanted to make his own films from "here on out". After Avatar's commercial success and his push to essentially change the face of what people expected out of a 3D live action/VFX heavy film this series of films is essentially his grand opus. He's taking his time with it for sure to make the films he wants to make. He's also working with the cream of the crop when it comes to industry experience and talent. These will all be visual feasts.

When you make close to 3 billion dollars (about 11.4X the budget) on an original IP I imagine it affords you a lot of creative freedom :)

How exactly do you "shoot" a production that's almost 100% CGI? And if it's just about facial capture (and not what actually will be on the screen) what difference does it make if it's 8K, 4K, HD, or whatever?

Whelp, considering a fair bit of Avatar numero uno was live action with a healthy amount of VFX there's a lot of advantages in regards to capturing higher resolution for starters.

We'll have to see whatever the content is in the next films to truly know.

Off Topic.

We need Battle Angel.

I´m wondering how many cameras are being built and shipped in a month. Anybody´s got an idea?
