  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim Cameron buys...

so why do you hang out on a technical forum?
and why especially on a forum dedicated to the red technology?

Huummm because that forum is open to everybody?

so why do you hang out on a technical forum?
and why especially on a forum dedicated to the red technology?

Simple answer: 1) because I somehow hope that the talk about tools ends quickly and we go back to talk about stories, which are the essence of what most of us do or would like to do, no matter the camera or the budget and 2) because thanks to some users who hang around here I've learned more about a tool I get to use, its advantages and its limitations.

Artists were always involved and also they in their science labs were experimenting technology through centuries.

Some of painting techniques were discovered by artists in Renaissance:

- the use of perspective

- foreshortening

- sfumato

- chiaroscuro

- balance and Proportion: proper sizes (LINK>>>)

- lighting effects (Caravaggio)

Btw. Renaissance artists made all of their own tools and materials, including paint!

Also we should not forgert Stanley Kubrik and his technical and theoretical devotion to the cinema, film cameras and lenses.

That means an artist and technology where always linked together.

Ben detto, Francesco!

Who cares who's bought how many of what where. Better to talk about its creative use than a fan boy cock swinging exercise.

Finally my world is back in place and spinning in the right direction again! :)

Congratulations Jim and the Team! After all those "Cameron does this does that" news
this is the announcement I've been waiting to hear!

I wonder if, after all these great directors who already embraced RED, but still lots
of filmmakers did all the RED bashing they could, finally this may shake (or shut) up the rest
of the doubters.

Thanks for the statement Mr. C
(Jim Camera-on .... Oooouuuuuh what a bad -and probably old- pun)

Congratulations once more!

Absolutely, I never said (or thought) that technological advances are irrelevant. In the end, if there weren't smaller cameras, most of the best movies of the '70s wouldn't have been made (or they would've been made in a totally different way). All I'm saying is that I find it hard to be excited about an announcement like "James Cameron buys 50 Epics". If I worked for RED, I'd probably be proud, but with some major movies using their cameras (and hundreds more being used on so many different things), I'd say they're aware of the impact of their camera in so many different markets.

That means an artist and technology where always linked together.

Again, I totally agree. All I'm saying is that it seems to be like the emphasis is very much on the tools these days (and not just on this technical forum). It's a matter of personal taste, I guess, or maybe different approach/perspective, or maybe age/experience, but I'm yet to be excited about any announcement being made about a movie being shot on Epic (or Alexa), except maybe the one David Mullen is shooting (on Epic) and the one Deakins has shot for Nichols (on Alexa). But, again, maybe it's just me...

Heh... I remember the night on the forum when somebody wrote (sorry I forget who) "Hey Jim, while we're all waiting for production lines to be put in place maybe you could do a limited run of handbuilt cameras...?"

Then Jim was like "Heh... that'd be cool"

Then an hour or so later..."Ok, here's the deal... we're gonna build some, it's gonna be called the Epic-M..... 58 grand"

Simply awesome being able to watch a story like this unfold!

Does this mean Mr Cameron jumps the line and the line gets longer by 50 units ? or more likely i missed a step being a new user?

RED can give out Ms when and to who ever they want. There is no real line. Giving out Ms to top DPs or directors makes a lot of sense for RED and for all of us. These guys will battletest the hell out of em and will create some beautiful pictures at the same time.
I guess he will get some VIP treatment and I wouldn't blame Jim for it. But I still think Toia deserves his M before JC. He will shoot about 10 stunning commercials well before we will see footage from JC.
Toia is asking for an M since last december I guess. So let's make the man happy. :w00t:

Really?

"I'm very excited about the ALEXA and what this will do for filmmaking. It's going to be revolutionary.""
James Cameron, a week or so ago.

You know what that means? It means that out there, in the real world, someone like Cameron can start a joint venture with a company, investing millions of dollars to develop a product, and at the same time spend some other money on another company's product. It's called free market and freedom of choice. In the real world most professionals are really less partisan than what it would seem by reading some posts on this forums (or elsewhere on the web). The world is not really black and white, and most people would pick the tools they like, without thinking that they're part of some strange and pointless marketing battle on the internet, with "factions" and "fanboys".

I don't give a damn about Cameron becoming a partner of Arri or buying a gazillion Epics. All I care for is STORIES and good storytelling, and I'm afraid I'm seeing less and less of those these days....but maybe that's just me.

He Francesco take it easy.
You are right. Maybe I wrote it a bit too harsh.
I was a kinda perplexed that all of the sudden JC shows up at the Arri booth holding a camerbody that looked very much like an epic and also was called "M" .
My thought was "did nobody tell him, that RED has their baby ready to go and shoots 5K?"
It looked like a missed opportunity.
But you are right, it's always the story first. Story first and then the st...

Cheers
Tim

Tim, I apologize if my reply sounded harsh, too. It's just that I miss the point of these threads. As far as I know, Cameron could have bought 50 Epics to break them apart and study the technology better to put it in a new camera or in the Alexa M, though that sounds quite out of this world. All I'm saying is that I really can't see the point and/or get excited about these "news". But, then again, it's a marketing choice by Red, and I'm really a small nobody to question it. I'm merely expressing an opinion, as wrong (or right) as it may sound, and it's just my own, I'm not really trying to convince anyone of anything at all.

It's all good man. I understand you better than you think ; )

Not sure really why everything has always to be derailed on here...

SERIOUSLY!!

Come guys, why does it always has to be this way, is almost tiring to read all the time, this is a RED FORUM, of course every one here is BIAS to RED products,
otherwise they would be at the Canon or Arri forum!!

I love Canon, been Photographing with their cameras for over 20 years!!

I love Arri, they have been making some of the best Film and now the best Cine/Video Digital cameras,
in cooperation with Zeiss, they have made the absolute BEST Cine Glass the world has ever seen, "The Master Primes" of course.

Canon has cameras, as does Arri, the Alexa and the new Alexa M are stunningly fatastic products, but why, for the love of GOD!! Even try to compare them to EPIC!!

Is like photographers that disscuss with me comparison of a 7D with a Hasselblad Medium Format Sensor @ 65MP, and argue that the images look the same, HA HA HA... PLEASE...

Alexa is a great camera, and so is every other camera out there, just each is different to its technological advancement and what they offer, each is meant for a purpose...

NONE is meant to compete with EPIC, why?? Because they have absolute no standing GROUND to do so... ;)

Story telling has always been my only goal and dream in life since childhood, the equipment that we use, does indeed shape how we do and tell this stories,
but should always be an implementation of this tools, not anything else but.

HAPPY SHOOTING!!

Oh... and once again... CONGRATS JIM and TEAM for yet and other GIANT win on this ever TUFF Hollywood world, well deserved,
as you guys have made a truly INSANELY FANTASTIC piece of machinery that is like nothing I ever used!!

were is he gonna put them all.... :)

Need some serious storage facilities...:)

Bye bye film cameras.... :(

This is it

Since the giant brains at Weta have probably developed a massively efficient pipeline for Epic 3D with The Hobbitt, and since Weta will be doing (I imagine) all the major CG on Avatar II, it seems eminently logical for Cameron to go with Epic. He's probably seen all the Hobbitt's tests and even the dailies from shooting so far. (I imagine that Cameron and Weta share information fairly freely since he's a fairly large client, and is an encyclopedia of 3D & CG knowledge himself.) What can he be planning to do with 50 cameras though? I wonder if he'll place the first huge order for Leica Summilux-C glass, as well.

Congratulations RED team, RED owners, and RED users :)

Omg....Totally, Ketch! That DSLR vs MFDB debate has been beat to DEATH on numerous forums! I carry both and each has it's applications.

I think ppl who think a s35 aps-c sensor looks the same as a medium format+ camera needs their eyes and or brained checked.

back on topic though, makes me wonder what the Alexa M's are gonna be for, 50 Epics is hopefully avatar 2... the stuff signed with Arri, side projects? B cams? who knows, the man has enough money to anything he wants. But this sure further proves that Epic is the camera of choice for 3d application hands down.
