I know this seems odd, but is there an option on the Red to monitor in SD? There is a method to this madness! Basically, I have a wireless monitor set up for referencing. I've looked through all of the Red configurations but cannot seem to find anything that allows it to down convert to SD.

I'd be grateful for any info on this.

The Preview Output on the RED ONE is 720p, so if you want SD you will need to use an external downconverter...

Thanks Stuart.

I have just purchased the black magic mini sdi-anaologue converter. Still, this doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

What converter would you recommend?

I think theres a problem with blackmagic and outputting from RED. it is not stable. get an AJA. - cost me alot of sweat on a big commercial shoot 2 weeks ago. thought I had burnt out my Black magic, so we bought a new one, and still it didnt work - only blinking images.

went through an AJA, and no problem...

Look for redbyte design decimator. Pretty good, support downconvert mode in Composite output only, but it's good enough for monitoring SD and much cheaper.

Blackmagic doesnt support P input but PsF instead, if you look at their technical specification as compare to AJA, you will find the difference.

Confirm Redbyte Decimator much cheaper than the AJA (PAL/NTSC composite out only) and works fine with Red HD-SDI outputs.

Make sure you have the latest firmware on that, they just released a new update that adds some great features.

EDIT: Also, we took our body to Blackmagic out here and the engineer there was not impressed with the jitter in the HDSDI output.

Ok, thanks Guys. I shall give the decimator a go and report back!!

Hi Anthony,

Make you download the Converter Utility from the Blackmagic Design website. If your Mini Converter SDI to Analog has older firmware, it will be upgraded to include down conversion.

I was looking to buy the Blackmagic Mini Converter SDI to Analog in the next few days under the assumption that the latest firmware update allowed it to downconvert the Red HD-SDI to SD composite out.

I would appreciate it if someone who has this item and a Red can confirm it doing that with that latest update?
