  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It's time for 2gig Mini Mags

Will be in time for Christmas. Price around $20K each ;-)

I remember landing on a cliff somewhere near freezing water at the edge of the earth to swap a 1TB Mini-Mag. Our helicopter pilot was an ace, but I did think to myself "I'd rather not die here" because we were getting some stellar shots :)

I do wonder if higher capacity Mini-Mags will happen first or a new media that allows for other things. Hard to tell.

Until they do, you always have this alternative (from the Epic-W/Weapon manual):

"RED TETHER, included in REDCINE-X PRO, allows you to record footage from your camera directly to a computer or an external drive. Using tethering bypasses the need to record to an SSD..."

So with some framerate limitations, you can have virtually unlimited recording space.

Unfortunately that won't work in a helicopter.

I think shotover could create essentially a raid rig inside their dome writing from card to card???? Screw down to hold 4 minimags with a "fake"mini mag that goes to a chasis holding 4 1 tbs

According to my information the minimags are just mSATA with something proprietary in it so that standard mSATA doesn't work. With today's NAND technology it would be no problem for our favorite company to make a 4 TB minimag. When there is a healty business case for 4 TB minimags, they will be made (there is no technical reason not to).

Dual card slot module, mini mag or other media

In DSMC1, 1.8 Redmag days, there was a rear card slot module that I think allowed you to hot swap cards while shooting. Unfortunately no mini-mag version of that product ever came to market. (Except for the meizler module, but only if you were David Fincher :wink5: )

Am I the only one who is horrified by that much footage on one card? Hell, I like more small media rather than more large.

I'm the same way.

I only buy 240 & 480GB mini mags for that very reason

Once RED tests them and gets whatever media approved, I've been good. I was one of the very early adopter of the 1TB Mini-Mags (mine still say 1TB) and have brought those around the world a few times with zero issues.

The trick for some of us depending on what we are shooting is to keep the camera rolling for 1 to 2 hours. 8K FF @ 5:1 at the moment nets you just shy of an hour of filming. In situations where your setup "is taking you somewhere" for $5K-$50K for a couple hours of filming or in my case where sometimes it's impossible to land the helicopter on say tiny icebergs, it's useful to have a bit more role time.

Once this memory chaos gets settled and if there's larger Mini-Mags or newer faster media. I suspect we'll see 2TB and 4TB mags in the future. Right now it's too damn bloody expensive mostly due to hardware and NAND pricing for premium media. 2TB "could happen" sooner though for sure.

Side note on the larger scale side of things, yes, SSDs costs should have dropped about 50% by now for all available capacities. While supply versus demand has been "what we've been told" regarding a bit of this, the hard truth is people who need a value of that sort of storage typically are willing to pay for it. However, with 12TB and shortly 15TB spinning disks it's going to be hard to justify a Honda Civic for 16TB SSDs for much longer, let along the 4TB prices which everybody and their cousin would be using if priced effectively.

I thought Minimags were SLC NAND flash? Which makes them incredibly difficult to manufacture in 1TB sizes. SLC is one bit per cell (other SSD are MLC). One bit per cell essentially gives each cell 4x the life expectancy of being rewritten compared to MLC. Try finding a 1TB SLC SSD online, there's like one and it's many thousands of dollars.

It's a good thing we have progress these days. Both current MLC and TLC-3D NAND are fast and dureable enough to hit the limits of the SATA interface these days. Many test has proven that old TLC memory has a life span of 3000 times to be written (1000 times garanteed). We use Samsung 850 pro that work on the limits al the time and haven't had a single frame drop. SLC has a life span of 50.000 times lets say you record always in HDR lowest compression which would be 520 MB/s on a 1 TB minimag, that would mean 11 years 24/7 recording. Who needs that?
