  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It's time for 2gig Mini Mags

It's a good thing we have progress these days. Both current MLC and TLC-3D NAND are fast and dureable enough to hit the limits of the SATA interface these days. Many test has proven that old TLC memory has a life span of 3000 times to be written (1000 times garanteed). We use Samsung 850 pro that work on the limits al the time and haven't had a single frame drop. SLC has a life span of 50.000 times lets say you record always in HDR lowest compression which would be 520 MB/s on a 1 TB minimag, that would mean 11 years 24/7 recording. Who needs that?

I would say that we do need that. I don't believe that there is such a thing as overkill for data integrity, especially on high-budget shoots. I wouldn't compromise on that - it can't be just "good enough".

Yes there is a thing as overkill for data integrity. The internet is backuped around 5 times, your bank date to (not counting the NSA, etc...) why not 500 or 5 million times?, because it's useless.
When you overprovision a drive with lets say 25% (we do, for data integrity and write speed) 24% of all the cells can break down in you still won't loose any data. 3D-TLC last approx. 1000 re-writes and test have shown that it's closer to 3000. When the 1st bit fails, you can check and see this when reading out the SSD.

For data integrity it's better to use a 25% overprovisioned el-cheapo SSD than a super high cost SLC-SSD with no overprovisioning.

Are you certain that the MiniMags are not using overprovisioning? Because that's even better if they do.

Then again, I cannot claim to know more than the Red engineers, who do this for a living. There must be very sound engineering reasons as to why they made the choices they did.

They do over-provision, it's a necessity for a SSD for performance reasons just as much as longevity. That's why the 512GB mags format to 480GB which is why the renamed them 480GB cards.
