  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

What I mean, is that once the camera is out and people get to see if they like the image quality and various specs, also considering the extremely low price and the very small form factor they could choose to go for it for A cam as well indeed, and not just as a Crash cam, just will not be the case for me, as I would only consider it as a Crash cam if I could not place or afford to crash an Epic Dragon... ;).

Lol, haha, I get you, I don't think even James Cameron can afford to crash an Epic. Lol. I would only use this an A cam for a web only project or SD broadcast, like testimonials interviews etc. I don't think these cameras are ready for Narrative film work.

lol you think BMC S35 will effect RED market? hahahhaha

Red Epic is in a whole different Hollywood tentpole market with Arri Alexa, F65 and Aaton.
Scarlet-x VS. F55, F5, C500.
The BMCS35 is going to duke it out with C300, F3, 1DC, Ikonoshop, FS700
5D MK3 vs 6D, old BMCC, D800, Af100, Gh3, C100. 1DX, digi bolex, FS100
PocketCam is a real real game changer, absolutely no competition

pocket cinema camera is crazy small....

F55 vs. Scarlet-x??? not a fair fight. I'm willing to bet the Epic spends more time shooting indie films (both shorts and features) than tentpole extravaganzas. BMCC4k is going to upend that market (if/when it ever hits the street). Will it have an impact on Red's market. Yes it will. By indie films, I'm including wedding videography as well...;)

Im Sold. I will say this camera will compete but I dont think it will take anything away from RED, RED has BMCC on Framerates..

Red has redcode raw, which is incredibly important. That as much as anything else is worth the "purchase ticket" as far as I am concerned.

I intend to get one of the little BM pocket cameras, as an extra-take-everywhere to my Scarlet, not to compete in any way. Intended as a step-up from the Sony Nex :)

For this reason:

"Because of the global shutter and different sensor technology, the 4K one doesn’t quite have the same DR[as the original BMCC]..."
So then there will be no effect on the Red market you mean? Are you suggesting that they are aimed at such niche markets that there will be no cross over between the camera systems what so ever?

12 stops of dynamic range.
Ultra HD and 1080HD resolution capture in 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 and 30 fps
Includes DaVinci Resolve and Ultrascope

Are you kidding? the only Real Cameras doing tentpole Are Epic, Alexa, F65 and Kodak 35mm film. And if you look at Production budgets film is in 3rd place. Now fast forward to the Dragon Sensor 17 to 18 stops at 6k, every cinematographer worth their salt would love to light and lens at that dynamic range. If you and I can Afford Epics, do you think money is an issue in the Tentpole world? Dnynamic range, compression, image quality, resolution are the most important factors.

indie Filmmakers, TV producers, Music vid cos, and the TVC crowd are all patiently waiting for a working Red Dragon. Don't let the Black Magic disruptive buzz fool you DR and Resolution trump all.

So effectively, this camera will have about as much dynamic range as the original Red One M? That is pretty piss poor if that is the case.

"With 12 stops of dynamic range you get amazing looking images beyond those of regular video cameras or even the highest end broadcast cameras. All this dynamic range is captured into ProRes or CinemaDNG files at 4K resolution, so images retain abeautiful film look. By capturing more detail from the sensor you can make creative decisions during DaVinci Resolve color grading! You can really push the shadows or highlights in either direction and preserve fine details in the image!"

Black Magic done the job , I remember when RED announced 3k for 3k , & now here Black Magic made it in real... 4k for under 4k

It was, then it was $4k, then $4.5k or so, then cancelled. Now this is $995 and closer to what Is originally talked to Red about 2006 or so. The problem is this is a 4k professional market, and if a good consumer. 4k can be done for $500, then a pro version can offer 4k recordable out for the price. If this had that and a 100-144mb/s h264 uhd p25 or p50 mode, In would be content to buy it. Thunderbolt output of a 4k feed would probably be the best, as it can pci stream over to a computer swell as a raid drive. In could just pick the mode that suites the situation.

Just to explain, I posted that before the official announcement with speculation as to the sensor maker.

In terms of DR - it is about 2.5 stops less than alexa, 2 less than f55/f5 and 4 less than dragon. Definitely no slouch, but not a juggernaut by any means.

Blackmagic were pretty much bang on with their "13 stops" on the BMCC.....

Epic says "13.5 stops" but my tests seemed to say more like 12-12.5 stops.... If BMCC are being bang on again with their 12 stops talk, it will be very hard to differentiate with the current Epic, in terms of DR.

Basically, very, very usable for most situations.
