  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

Yes, for me, with images of Cassavetes-type personal work rolling around in my head, higher frame rates are a non-issue.

Reading this thread I see this :

And how many of your 1,494 posts are as amazing as your last one?

Now lets see what is going to be the first feature film shot with these new cameras, including Epic Dragon of course..

Isn't it cropped, indicating it should be able to be be made to do at least 2k. I don't know if it can get anywhere near the original resolution of the original BMCCC. As we know from scarlet, the extra resolution is useful in increasing the resolution in a fulhd frame, and reducing aliasing and flicker issues.

This illustrates the image window on the sensor:

I was sort of interested in BMD's 4K camera before I saw the full specs. I mean, first a step down in dynamic range and apparently the RAW is only 3840*2160, so it'll debayer down to about 3K (although that's a problem with the current Scarlet-X as well). And it doesn't even include a full version of Resolve anymore.

And if the pocket cam also records RAW at just 1920*1080, I don't really see any use for it either.

It all depends on what your aspirations are for the pocket cam. If you were thinking that it could be used as your main A-cam, then I would agree. However if you are thinking this is a fun little camera which I can take everywhere with me and shoot whatever whenever, then it is a great little tool. I intend it to replace a small nex camera, not as a primary camera on a shoot. In the right situations in good light, and when you don't need to go to wide, the image quality could be very pleasing. I view it as the "camera you have is better than no camera at all" when you are popping out to the shops, and happen to see the most amazing light over the distant trees. Not for strolling on to the set of a commercial, and saying "let me just whip out my pocket camera" :) :)

Yeah, the pocket cam could be a great underwater camera for example.

The real mystery is this "compressed CinemaDNG". There doesn't seem to be any solid information on what kind of compression is involved. I haven't seen any mention of JPEG2000; just normal crappy JPEG. That's too bad, but I suppose wavelet compression is too computationally expensive to do in such a small camera. Look at the heat challenges Red has faced.

Since it doesn't shoot stills it can't really replace my NEX as something small that I can lug around for fun.

And if the sensor is 1920*1080, you're going to end up with an effective resolution of about 1.5k so it's of little use on set.

its somehow revealing of where the real excitement is: with all the new announcements from Red the most viewed thread on RedUser by far is BlackMagic 4K Cinema Camera!

Its an hard fact to digest for all the Redlovers out there. Hasn't anybody thought of closing the thread before it became a wild fire?

Not true. This thread has less than half the views of " NAB13- Dragon Sensor Upgrade Program begins"....

my bad, you're right, it comes only third place?!

anyhow, still revealing, and inappropriate for many

The dragon sensor and the red motion control are two very sort after technologies by many cinematographers.

The Dragon sensor alone will double Red camera sales.

Red needs to get off the ideological high horse and PLESE start selling new cameras with built in Dragon sensors, fans etc. At 30k it's still a steal to buy a camera with this much resolution and dynamic range. You an always upgrade existing cameras alongside. To continuously keep buying customers waiting year after year is becoming a real drag. People have real productions and businesses to run. This does not change your upgradeability ideology in anyway. To leave the design limitations for evf mount outputs etc only to sell add on accessories is seriously uncool. Design a new camera from scratch, call it what you want Epic-MXXX, customers demand it.
