  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

hmm... or you could throw me 10k and i'll fix your workflow. maybe i need to take up consulting.

if y'all have serious questions about workflow, google it or send me a message. but google it first. let's let folks talk, no reason to derail the thread. and brett answered your question, btw...

Check out programs like PFTrack and The Foundry's "Rolling Shutter" for bespoke methods. It's trivial now.
Not when one object is moving over another. Foundry's own demo media shows artifacts in this case, similar to twixtor type artifacts due to complex motion in a scene.

That's true, it depends on optical flow technology, but you can mask out confusing picture elements for the program. Anyway District 9 looks fine and they didn't even use these methods.

I believe after this announcement I feel a price drop is coming on for Scarlet.....and maybe some more software add on updates.

My reasoning look what happened with Epic & the F5/F55.

Hehe so I see, that Pocket Cinema Camera looks sweeeeeeet. Not sure aboud recording porores or raw to SD cards though... I guess the Red One recorded to CF card, so maybe.

My guess is it buffers like the digital Bolex...?

Haha. If you could seriously fix all of our issues in 10 minutes I would gladly pay you the 10k. We are working with a former ILM manager and the cost for fixing RS at this level is far more than we would like to spend. AND if I go practical I get to use real fog!

Bottom line is I would rather pay more for production than post production to get it right from the beginning. It's just kind of a bummer that I can't push these cameras without consequence.

i'm pretty surprised that you're having such a problem with it unless the types of shots you're going for are extreme. everything has limits. remember reels? gate weave? rolling shutter? don't forget where that term came from...

but seriously if you can pull off what you want and prefer practical fx, i say do it in camera.

Jim can always reveal new features for the Scarlet due to 'optimization' of the firmware. Faster frame rates would be a welcomed possibility with 'optimization'.

Side note: I wonder how Sony and Canon are reacting to the news ?

Gate weave was EZ! Get a arri 435 PR 535 and have a pin registered telecine. I ran registraron tests on those cameras by running the same film twice and the error was less than one tenth of a pixel. Same thing with the telecine.

RS is nastier. Not that it's terrible, but it's not as trivial.

We do have a very aggressive approach to achieving these particular effects. Im really just frustrated that everything that looked so good on paper has gotten so complicated. I'm tired of pulling keys anyways! Anyways, I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I'm really looking forward to all of the upcoming announcements from Red, Adobe, and BMD. I have a feeling this may be one of the most exciting NABs we have had in a while.
