  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

I'm hoping red releases a fixed lens 4k camera for $4k. Would be a great interview/doc camera.

Was this really a surprise ...everyone new this was coming ..right ?

Global shutter now that is interesting ! Combine this with Davinci Resolve and possibly a New NLE...... I 'm sensing a new major player in the production game.

Go the Ozzies !

P.S. Thanks Brandon for the pics confirms it all ...now if we could just find out by what BM means by "Resolve...now with online editor"

I certainly wasn't expecting a new camera offering while BMD still is having trouble shipping their first camera, and haven't even begun shipping the MFT model yet.

Not surprising at all. I mean there's a 4K Gopro. There's more to an image than figures though. You need to mojo also (which I think the BMC lacks to some degree).

I am happy to be resting in the RED arena. And anyway Jim has said he will ensure RED owners win in the end, so I am content.

Frankly improvements in tech are approaching insignificance as shooting gets easier and easier. It's like the VFX revolution in storytelling: the focus goes back to the art since all the spectacle is accessible and no longer novel. Everybody calms down and goes home to the blank canvas waiting for them.

Interesting is the ON BOARD Prores for both cams. Prores 4K? Its going to sell like hotcakes.
Note they don't say the ProRes is 4K. Just that it's there. Could be 1080p (though I'd love it if it were 4K, would make a viable alternative to the hugely-data-hungry Cinema DNG).

Although camera tests are a bit inconclusive unless you are part of one, I do sense there will be a need to do some serious testing after NAB. Now that the 4K+ field is expanding and the Alexa is still going strong it will be interesting to see how all of these cameras stack up from IQ to useability to post workflow. Seems like there's going to be options galore.

Pro rez is a big deal in TV land ...just ask Arri.

This now makes BM the 2nd 4K camera manufacturer with onboard internal recording .....unlike Sony & Canon.

Not a chance. They decided that wasn't their market when they redefined the Scarlet. They're serving pros now (though keeping prices aggressive for what they offer compared to the high-end competition). Obviously this BM thing is just specs on paper right now but if it's 4K prores onboard for 4K, and the dynamic range doesn't blow, they're going to take a huge chunk of that indie market me thinks. That's all a certain set of the population has been crying for. RED will continue to be a step ahead and offer options that force the other guys to play catch up, but none of those options will be $4K.

[h=5]Blackmagic Production Camera 4K - 3.995 $

Super 35 Sensor, Global Shutter, Ultra HD and 4K, Built in SSD, Touch LCD, Metadata Entry, CinemaDNG RAW, ProRes, Thunderbolt, EF Mount, Free DaVinci Resolve & Ultra Scope. I, for one, am curious to see how the global shutter will deliver!

I'd sure hate to be Sony right now. Lol

I bet we something awesome from RED tomorrow... And for less $$$ than we expected. :)

And I'd sure hate to be a BMCC owner right now since their 2.5k models just started shipping a few months back. This announcement is more or less burning the people who just waited half a year for a delayed 2.5k camera with 16mm.

On top of that, the company had said Super35 sensor would have cost way too much to make the camera affordable, and here we are...

Weren't they taking preoders shortly after NAB? Some people waiting up to a year and now for $1K more you get twice the camera. This is very agressive pricing! Interesting to see how they're gonna handle the high demand

As one of those owners (took delivery in January), yeah this took the wind out of me a bit. Beyond that, I don't know that these new models will necessarily be shipping that soon. They apparently claim summer (for which hemisphere, though?), but we all know how release dates go...

In the meantime, I have a camera that works pretty well - really only tainted for me by aliasing issues, which I'm not sure they care about solving for the other models. The price difference isn't that radical, and I feel perfectly comfortable with my camera as-is until these new cameras start actually shipping en-masse. At that point I can re-assess selling/upgrading. It also helps that my current camera is essentially paid for.
