  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

The pocket camera looks cool. The 4k cam looks interesting too! But I'm more interested in compressed RAW. Very curious to see what RED has up their sleeves.

im a EF BMCC owner and I'm not angry at the least. In fact, I'm super excited! :)

Ive paid my camera off in 2 gigs, and rented it a bunch of times because of how "rare" it is. I even managed to trade my davinci resolve for a SDI DP6 with a great guy in the RED community. I was hoping red would announce a more affordable camera, or a price drop on the scarlet. But honestly i dont care anymore. i'm going to get one of each of blackmagic's new cameras.

Technology is just changing at an incredible pace in the industry. Next step will be in the post side of things. Hope Apple can keep up with Red and Black Magic in the next generation of Mac Pro and Displays!

Who would have thought that Reduser was the website I had to go to in order to get excited about new BMC Cameras?!

Pretty stoked about that global shutter. The Scarlet is a pain for cgi/vfx integration.

You can get this and the recently-announced MOVI for the price of a RED package now... I know Jim and Jarred have something up their sleeves, though ;)

I'm telling you dudes.

Red is about to release an ergonomically correct camera with a Dragon 6k chip and dual offline / online recording options with a global shutter for $30K - 50k

You're forgetting, that BM already done this two years ago, when they released $100k Resolve for $1k. Now they doing the same thing to the camera makers.

this is really great news...for everyone....
but as someone who ordered the first BMC right away and gave up after 7?8?9? months to get a scarlet, this gets me thinking....it might be a year before this ships in numbers and until then a lot will happen....and most of it might just be because of this announcement....
regardless, exciting news...i still can't wait for dragon....
and i happened to come across the sony presentation today...what a bore....the 4k TVs and the 4K media thing looks nice but the cameras look crazy compared to these BMCs....and i am not even thinking about canon.....what the hell are they doing?

True. Great times we are living in!

Wow I'm so exited for this! They addressed the biggest problem with the original BMCC: the Uncompressed Raw. Apparently no one noticed but it's COMPRESSED DNG RAW! That could be really brilliant! If you add, 4K, global shutter and everything that the BMCC already had for 4000$. That's just crazy!

i fixed your quote for you.

Exactomundo. The guys at Embassy were asked about how they got around RS on District 9 and they were like 'oh, well we just worked on it..." Since then there's even better tools to work with it. You don't see any drift in that movie at all.

If by taking 5 minutes to learn a better workflow you mean taking 5 minutes to buy a global shutter camera or purchasing film from Kodak then you would be correct. We have been testing Scarlet, Epic, Alexa, and F55 for a certain project and with the amount of match moving we need to pull from fast camera movements I haven't found a post rolling shutter correction plugin that won't distort the data to the point that we get noticeable sliding with any models placed into the scene. The F55 performed the best obviously, but the motion from their global shutter looks like ass. If you have any advice for fixing this issue with a 5 minute adjustment to my workflow by all means! It would be greatly appreciated. However at this point we are looking at adding an extra 20k to our 7 minute short film budget to do the effects practically, which I am actually in favor of. Still though, the rolling shutter will stand out.
