  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ISO, ISO...

This new sensor could just pay for itself with the expense of buying or renting equipment such as lights or fast lens.

Yeah. The noise control doesn't impress me nearly as much as the range in the highlights. The 5DmkII washes out those highlights, though in my experience is just fine at pulling up shadows.

That's primarily because we aren't throwing out the highlight range as you push the iso up.

It's interesting that the first shot seems to go from neutral blacks on the left side of the frame to blue blacks on the right side. What could be the reason for that?

We're not close to being finished yet.

Not only is this totally amazing and exciting ... don't you think it's great that Jim is still working out of his garage.
Jim, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. They should share one garage... who knows what will come out of its door

Hey is this the famous RED candle that always burning at both end?

That's a drastic improvement. I wonder how things stand with the 2/3" cams?..

Considering that 2/3" is going to benefit slightly less from downsampling, let's have the conservative thinking that 2/3" are now on par with S35 from the past, and S35 is completely awesome, a beast.

As I said on Scarlet User:

I have to say that I thought I couldn't get any more impressed.

This will only get better, and getting clean images like this is the dream of every person coming from noisy low quality imaging solutions.

What we thought we could only achieve in 5K Scarlet now it's even better on the 3K, and the 5K is a complete beast.

Completely awesome.

:biggrin5:

ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed are standards to which RED and Canon are both adhering.

A candlelit scene is going to look just as bright on both at like settings.
A stop down on aperture and a stop up in shutter speed isn't going to change this comparison at all.

I'm sure there's another 5DII owner around who would be willing to do the futile added comparison.

Take the comparisons to "Other Cameras"... and make sure you shoot the Canon video and not still mode (since it can't do 24fps RAW).

Hi Deanan can you elaborate on this?

If I understand you correctly, we can now protect the highlights as we drive the ISO up and up...? This would theoretically GREATLY increase visible DR in the final grade (albeit as a grading trick).

In the past I have processed footage in REDalert twice, once @ 200 iso and again @ 800 iso. The two passes were combined in comp to protect the highlights and create a sort of HDR composite. Yes this is an absurd amount of effort, but the final graded image retained a bit more DR than anything I was able to get in curves..

Up until now lifting the iso would result in blown out highlights. Can we now protect them with an adjustable ceiling? Is this a new option in Redcine-X using REDcolor and REDgamma?

These two tools would ROCK in Redcine-X (to be used in combination with iso adjustments)

1.) Adjustable highlight ceiling.
2.) Adjustable highlight roll-off.

Add transparency values and you're done :)

(yes I'm greedy)

How would it not change?

An image at T2.8 ISO 800 will be a stop brighter at T4 ISO 800, same for shutter differences.

To determine the sensitivity one has to know everything affecting exposure.

Well... I'm curious. Let's wait for RED Day.

Here is one lit by my iPhone... a free app called "Just Light". Not very bright. Daylight balanced and still about ISO 4000.

Download the app yourself, turn off all the lights and see what I'm talking about... :-)

I'm not only extremely impressed by the ISO 4000, candle lighting MacBeth, Jim in his garage playing "Mad Scientist" again, but by the fact that I too have "Just Light" on my iPhone. Cooool. Best flashlight app because it stays on until you turn it off, doesn't go to sleep like the others. Apparently, neither does Jim!

Is there a higher res version of this image. Looks really good but its kindof difficult to determine noise and other characteristics at this resolution

These advances are going to wonders for my love of deep focus images. Cant wait to stop down! Time to buy a bunch of neglected slow glass!
