  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ISO, ISO...

Hi Deanan can you elaborate on this?

If I understand you correctly, we can now protect the highlights as we drive the ISO up and up...? This would theoretically GREATLY increase visible DR in the final grade (albeit as a grading trick).

In the past I have processed footage in REDalert twice, once @ 200 iso and again @ 800 iso. The two passes were combined in comp to protect the highlights and create a sort of HDR composite. Yes this is an absurd amount of effort, but the final graded image retained a bit more DR than anything I was able to get in curves..

Up until now lifting the iso would result in blown out highlights. Can we now protect them with an adjustable ceiling? Is this a new option in Redcine-X using REDcolor and REDgamma?

ISO on the Canons will make the A/D clip highlights early to gain more on the low end. However, on MX, the highlights are preserved. In post also, the highlights will also be preserved as one of the benefits of FLUT.

We're not close to being finished yet.

I like to hear that, but I'd rather hear "We're finished", so I can get my Epic.

Not only do I film time-exposure/time-lapse but am deeply invoved in Astronomy, imaging. Ever since Scarlet / Epic, could not stop wondering how much of an impact this would have on the specialty world of deep-sky astrophotography! Filming eclipses with HDR / low-noise fisheye panoramas of the Milky Way

Jim, AMAZING STUFF, real imaging discoveries to come with this type of snsitivity.

I posted this in Other Camera's thread as well, but here is the R1 at 2000...

RED 758 Candle Light test.

So I put a candle in front of my color checker chart today and shot it:
It's pretty amazing to see how much the Jim's recent images blow away the existing camera.

I'll post the R3D's too.

50mm Nikon Prime open to 2.8
ISO 2000 on RED
Build 21.4.1 (NEW Color science)

REDSPACE GAMMA
REDSPACE COLOR

The files marked TUNGSTEN AND DAYLIGHT are snapshots to show you the exact output settings from RED ALERT.

The 4K Tiffs and the r3d's files can be downloaded from here:
R3d's will take an extra half hour.

Epic and Scarlet will be killer timelapse machines. :)

I used to do some crazy timelapse boxes about 10 years ago and I'm super
excited about what we'll be able to do in the new cameras.

Can't wait Deanan

David... there is no question that M-X is way better at handling noise than M. However... a couple of things to point out. I downloaded the top r3d and opened in RAND (Graeme's new internal Alpha app). This really is ISO 4000. And it should be balanced for 1940K and 25 tint. Since NR is not a sin, if you add a default amount, you will see a much better image. Certainly not the quality of where we are now with M-X... but not so bad as you posted.

Post tools are there to help you when you need it. It should be noted that all DSLRs use NR and sharpening in camera. The higher the ISO, the more they apply. It makes sense. Why not? Except we do not use either in a RED ONE. So there may be a time when you need to pull them out of the bag.

drooling at the thought of getting my scarlet underwater without lights! absolutely loving the clean low-light shots.

Yep, Scarlet underwater will be Epic

Jim,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try the tint and ISO and some NR. I wasn't trying to post a crappy image, I was really trying to illustrate how much better the new sensor looks. This is why I posted the R3D, so that it didn't seem like I was trying to show a bad image or to be negative.

I'm glad that RED leaves "sharpening to taste". I alter the amount of sharpening on a job per job basis, this is a level of control I appreciate as a user.

Yep. Plugged in those values and got a much more pleasing image.

David

We believe that sharpening (if needed) should be the very last thing in line to do... if done early, like in camera, its effect is compounded throughout the post chain (ringing). I guess we are alone in our thinking.

NR is a controversial subject. The "other guys" don't give you time to think about it because they do it for you. We let you decide if you want/need it. Unfortunately, many don't even know that this is a valid tool. So we just made our new sensor have less noise. :-)
