  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is now a good time to buy the Scarlet?

Al,

I just talked to our rep yesterday (4/2)...The AI Package are all in stock and can ship 3-5 Days.

Nick, what is the estimated wait time if ordering today, any ideas? Everything in my cart currently says "In Stock".

Cheers!

If you need 4K RAW now then buy, if not wait.

Unless the sony RAW recorder is less than $7,000 (also it doesn't shoot 4k yet) its no competition.

Till someone makes a 4k camera that shoots raw onboard the RED line is without competition.

It's 565 $. The 4K RAW recording unit on the FS700 is the Sony HXR-FMU128. It fits like a battery.

no no no, i'm sorry, but this is BS,
Sony SRMemory recorder is $15K, so for the FS700 external 4K recorder i would expect something in $5K ballpark, and most likely media will be more expensive than redmags;
you know how much they charge just for the F3 firmware

I think this is the crux of the issue. Sure, Sony seem to have made a great camera in the FS-700.

But what of the people who bought the FS-100 last year? Or those that bought any other sony camera before that for that matter.

RED cameras come with the knowledge that if they can make an existing product better through software, they will.

and until that 4K is recordable internally, its not that big a deal. No the High speed on the other hand........

Unless you're shooting within the next two weeks, you may as well wait to see what NAB brings. Maybe nothing gets released... but what if another 4k RAW camera is announced and is half the cost? Sure it's not likely, but it is possible.

As for Dragon, I think it's going to be ~$5000. That's how much Mysterium to Mysterium-X was for R1, right? And then a little less for Epic. Of course, that doesn't include downtime, shipping costs, and duties/taxes from sending it back and forth to REDHQ. At the very least, that's why I would wait for NAB; just to see what the plan is for Dragon.

Yeah I'm shooting in next two weeks :)

Honestly the only thing that is intriguing is the Canon 4K DSLR, because I am a Canon shooter. But I don't expect it to be anything close to the Scarlet because of the C300, and well that is not very close either! So yeah not really expecting much. I was more inclined to see any news about RED at NAB but it seems most of you have covered that topic here already. Dragon upgrade is not in my immediate upgrade plan :)

I definitely wasn't referring to anything specifically (vis a vis Canon4kDSLR ... I doubt it will be 4k; 4k-sensor-to-1080p ala C300 at best). I'm speaking more pie-in-the-sky/surprise contender. Plus, with NAB being so close, I can't imagine anyone plunking down $10k before seeing what other manufacturers plans are for the upcoming year... Unless you're shooting and making money from April 9th to 21st (or whatever NAB is) then it seems like an uninformed decision to me buying someone the week before NAB...

... Let me rephrase; you've waited this long for Scarlet, so what's the harm (to you or your personal production) in waiting another few days? PLUS, it's now out of backorder; it's not like you order today and have to wait 6 weeks to get it.

I think we will see many 4K solutions in the next 12 months. You have to have the cameras out first, to sell the TVs later.

Judging from history Red products hold their value very well, also their trade/upgrade paths are fantastic. My Scarlet is the only camera I have ever purchased that was worth more than what I paid a few months after I bought it. No worries in that area.

BTW been meaning to ask this question: How well do you think the Scarlet will hold its value over the coming year?

Well heres a bit of truth. The Sony cam wont shoot 4k right away. Sort of how the F3 shoots 444 but only to an external recorder. God knows how much the 4k RAW recorder will cost, and whats its workflow will be. Also, it seems that it will be a Sony proprietary product so you will be stuck with one of two things. The RAW will be uncompressed to a multitude of recorders, Codex, Gemini, Sony Recorder etc... or it will be compressed and recording to a sony product with an unknown cost and workflow.

The RED system of acquisition and post is already established and the mainstream for high end production. Whether its REDONE, Epic, Scarlet. As far as value goes, the cameras are the gold standard. Dont worry about their value, if you can use them to work, it doesn't matter what the cameras value is.

There won't be any new camera from RED and I doubt that any other manufacturer will unveil a product that will be able to compete with Scarlet.

If you're thinking in terms of Dragon/non Dragon, the new sensor will first be installed only as an upgrade to existing cameras (my educated guess) and only after everyone is upgraded Scarlet with Dragon will hit the store.

So if I were in your shoes I'd pull the trigger now.

I think there will be a Dragon M my guess from looking at the epic release.

I don't think any upcoming release wil change "core" part for the EPIC/SCARLET camera family. But I DO expect something interesting around LENSES and accessories. Wish them to re-think v-mount battery family to make it more up to date and flexible - still believe it is the best powering solution. AND to buy or not to buy? GO get it now unless it too late (wish you good luck to stay no more than 2 months in line - but I'm not sure :))) Don't think any "dragon" update will be on market this year. I d rather wish RED TEAM to spend more time for R&D and figure out noiseless 3200 native ISO sensor with 16 stops dynamic range (Yes, I am that crazy:)

Nostradamus predicted that this year's Red booth will contain:

a Red Laser projector running off of Red Ray
Meizler Module
Electronic RPP's
A significant update to RCX Pro
and a Demo Epic Dragon, not yet ready for prime time.

He was a little fuzzy about the Dragon and was hopeful for stills mode, but acknowledged that his own bias may have tainted his vision. :-)
