Common Sense

errrrr . . . . with a competent driver they can both get you to the same place at the same time???

I think our Buddies @ FVESCO where trying to say: Features! And Durability! It's an analogy we often use when describing our Products...

But even with that Martin's question still hasn't been answered legitimately. What are those features? What makes it more durable? Where's the beef?

I've had a MM mattebox for more than 2 years now, and it is just not sturdy enough, it is not badly build, but after maybe 30 days of use my assistant is fed up with it, the trays don't slide in easily when a filter is inserted, the door mechanism is not strong enough (we keep it locked with a rubber band now) so I am seriously considering a MB20 now.

I've owned two RedRock matteboxes and one of those two was also replaced under warranty. They wear out fast. They have some serious design flaws too. The RedRock is a great concept and not a bad mattebox on a budget for an independent owner, but it is a liability on any professional set. The filter stages don't rotate smoothly and tend to get stuck tight. The swing away mechanism wears out quickly. The neoprene do-nut implementation isn't very good and requires some extra work to make it reliably functional. Oh, and the flags like to flop around or even just fall off. On the bright side, the actual mattebox portion is decent (it's a plastic box, pretty simple). The stage assembly is garbage. The swing-away arm is nice and sturdy, but the hinge mechanism needs a re-design. Unacceptable amount of space and light leakage between stages. The flag clamping implementation needs a re-design as well. It begins to fail as soon as the paint wears off the clamp points. No 138mm rear option...

Don't get me wrong, I have a handful of complaints about the Arri matteboxes too, but they're still the best out there. I still think there are better ways to build the filter stage assemblies to prevent light leaks and to lock trays in place. Arri's tray designs leave something to be desired at times.

I have both an Redrock and an Arri MB20. The MB20 is worth the 3x price.

I can't believe there is anyone out there who thinks the redrock mattebox can compare to an ARRI mattebox MB20 in any shape or form. Are you serious guys? Each one has a target market. One micro/low budgets (actually, a very, very good mattebox for the price you pay for it!) and the other one is an industry standard. Choose your type of work and the right mattebox for it.

If you actually hold in your hands and use either of the matteboxes the differences are unmissable. It's like driving a Mercedes and a Ford fiesta. They both have 4 doors, 4 wheels and a steering wheel and that's where the similarities end....

Still have a couple of these "mercedes" sitting on the lot. Here is what's left:

I have an MB20, various Chrosziels, and some cheaper boxes, and the MB20 really stands above the rest for build quality, flexibility and ease of use. I know that it is something that should last for years and years. To be honest I was not that impressed by the Redrock box when I used it. It was not just the lower build quality, but the smoothness with how it all fitted together. I would not trust some of the components to solid long term use.

I think old saying of "buy cheap, buy often, or buy quality, and buy once" really applies. However the mb20 is not a light weight box, and I will sometimes put on a lighter weight chrosziel, if I don't need the same degree of filter flexibility.
