  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the RED 3-axis Lens Control System

Excited to say that AbelCine is also selling the 3-Axis system. Come check it out in our showrooms in NYC and Burbank.

Thanks Andy. Its always great to be able to go somewhere and test these things out in person, and we are very honored to have AbelCine as a partner. Your showrooms in realms of professional camera gear are pretty hard to beat.

I'm gonna guess that wireless video includes a way to create wireless proxies.

Apart from the obvious features, one of the biggest advantages of using the RED system is that the WMD can inject metadata directly into the R3D files including Lens make , model and focal length, frame by frame focus zoom and iris readings ( even on lenses without LDS or i Data )

Wow!!! Guess I'm canceling that MDR3 and HU3 order...
I'll need a P-tap power cable.

How about something like a Microforce control for the operator to use on the fluid head and give Focus and Iris control to the wireless hand unit? I do this a ton with my Preston and will sell it for a Red setup if this were possible.
Great work Red!!! My wish list keeps getting longer...

Is that a Panamera w/arm in your Avatar?

Still lenses

Still lenses

Nice system
Any chance of a system to control still lens motors via their own focus motors on a motion mount v2? :-) sorry had to ask...

We killed the Proxy part of the Meizler... Which left lens control and wireless video...the last half which we will talk about later ;)
Speaking of remote lens controls... how about the Redmote Pro? Has that also been killed, since we haven't heard anything on it in a long while?

As there won't be a proxy module anymore:

Can we expect a firmware update that allows to choose different settings between the RED monitor path and SDI out?

Like i.e. RC3 to LCD/EVF and Redlog to SDI?

Btw: the RED LCS looks so hot!!

Well ... sure would be AWESOME IMO to have the ability to set the touchscreen to RAW all the time and keep the SDI on RG3 :)

This system would make a Redmote Pro redundant, particularly if we were to see still lens control via the THC... via software update perhaps?

Speaking of software is that kick ass iPad remote access app close?

+1 for D-Tap cable for its release date.

Yes please. If this kit is going to be as modular as systems like Prestons it NEEDS one of those cables. I know RED dislikes DTAPs but any chance one can be included or at least offered as a separate purchase at the time of release, Jarred?

Heden motor support is built into the WMD...

Sean,

Alright, I'll confess - up to this point, I was simply intrigued.
Watched every video (some more than once), gathered more info at the store.
Looks like a great product...

Then comes post #79 - compatibility with Heden motors. Now the "want to have" looks like it will turn into a "must have". Time to spin those motors wirelessly.

A few questions;

Can you mix motors?
Say an analog M26T and a digital M26VE? Then swap either out to a RED Lens Control motor?
Or other mixes of manufacturers with RED (someone is gonna ask - might as well address it now)

Are you planning on manufacturing those interface cables or leave it to a second tier supplier? If someone else, would RED have a certified list…
(my concern is about mixing other suppliers / manufacturers products with RED's and resultant impact on the warranty policy)

The only lens drive gear shown so far is a small 0.8mm. No listing of the number of teeth - could that be added to the product info on the site?
Roadmap of accessory gears planned for 2014?

The 7.2 V Battery looks very close to an L series - Would my guess that they are close, but not compatible be correct?
The beautiful thing about standards is that there are so many of them!

Nice to see this product will be available in early 2014 - though paying for the Dragon will take priority...

Sure, if the THC can drive the focus on still lenses without any additional hardware, that would fill the current Redmote Pro sized gap nicely.

Yea, I'm wondering if we would need a dedicated transceiver... not WMD, but just a Dirty Bomb... or The Bong?

Yep. It came out last year and we have shot with it dozens of times... always with Epic of course. It is in need of a Dragon upgrade though... and now a the RED 3-axis lens control system.
