  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the RED 3-axis Lens Control System

Any chance that the Red WMD will work with a 3rd party hand controller? In some ways I would not expect it but it had been mentioned with regard to the Meizler. It also might help soften the price of the switch over.

Does this system use same frequency band as Redmote ? and whats range of it please ?

Also is there any news of a Redmote Pro or some sort of interface to another remote controller, iPad, IPhone etc ?

Yep. It came out last year and we have shot with it dozens of times... always with Epic of course. It is in need of a Dragon upgrade though... and now a the RED 3-axis lens control system.

Thanks Jarred! I've had a lot of damn fun thanks to owning an Epic (and indirectly thanks to you and Jim for making the best f*cking toys in the business). And they just keep coming... Dragon, 3-axis, etc. It sounds like I need to plan my first trip out to NAB.

I can't wait to get my hands on this three axis system. Have to put a temporary hold on purchasing new gear though, but you're making it very difficult.

Continuous using of USM motors on Canon lens for focusing would kill them pretty fast - they not designed for that. And they not accurate. What would be possible instead is step-less continious iris - this is would be awesome feature for EF and Nikon lenses. All still lens shooters would bless Jim forever if he made this happen. But it is not going to happen cause from the marketing point it would potentially cannibalize red lenses and this FIZ unit.

Interesting math on pricing : WMD+THC+3 motors - $10600. Complete kit - $14500. Almost 4 extra grands just for cables I guess :)

Don't forget, you will want to mount your motors (Bracket is $ 250 x 3 = $750), Add the 0.8 gears ($ 75 x 3 = $225), perhaps the case @ $ 625
So before any cables, you are at $ 12,200
Some will want to mount on 15mm so add the reducers...

Looks like a good collection of cables in the full kit. Not only are some mandatory for operation, I'm sure there will be more to come.

Never-the-less, I believe most will buy what they need for their own situation or kit.
Rental houses will likely start with the kit and add on to that as a baseline.

Brian, the bracket and reducers come with the lens motors. Along with the gears. So....

The only thing I'm missing now, is a really small breakout box, that build only a few centimeters to the module-stack.
The quad module and clutch together with the +1, OLED-evf and touch-screen is a bad ass system. Even more so when the 3-axis arrives.

Please consider a mini breakout / mini i-o :)

Congratulations!

Excited to hear what is in the works for wireless video. That said, I'm wondering why the range on the WMD is 200 ft and makes me wonder what range wireless video solutions will be.

We're excited to get our Dragon flying in the air but need at least 1500 + feet for video and fizz like RT motion and Paralinx are supporting.

Cheers,

PCG

We killed the Proxy part of the Meizler… Which left lens control and wireless video…the last half which we will talk about later ;)

Another item to add to the list of things that I need to save money for!

We also did a refresh of our Lens and Lens Accessory page....

Very nice. Dare I ask when we might see some more glass there?

What I really want of course are a set of T1.3 Red Pro Speeds...

Is this going to work better than the REDMOTE?

In all seriousness, I have a hard time trusting anything wireless from RED after the experience (mine and collective redusers) with the REDMOTE. It is probably the worst piece of gear I've ever owned. New antenna, check. Latest firmwares, check. Sent in in to RED, check. Still it only works some of the time. The range is horrible and it drops connection like crazy. It's too unreliable.

So please, tell me why i would drop 14.5k into a wireless product when RED has never directly addressed the fact that the REDMOTE is flawed in design and execution?

I sincerely hope this thing works. But I'll definitely wait several months for the first-hand reports to come back on it. I'll print them out and collect them under my REDMOTE paperweight...
