  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the RED 3-axis Lens Control System

D-tap has already been killed on the +1 module and on the new battery-adapters. I concur that they continue and finish off d-tap!

In all seriousness, I have a hard time trusting anything wireless from RED after the experience (mine and collective redusers) with the REDMOTE. It is probably the worst piece of gear I've ever owned. New antenna, check. Latest firmwares, check. Sent in in to RED, check. Still it only works some of the time. The range is horrible and it drops connection like crazy. It's too unreliable.

Hmm, I never had an issue with the RedMount after the beta 4 firmware and onwards... However, the 3-axis system is based on tried and tested Element Technica gear...

Not to spoil this announcement w/ tons of redmote complaints but latest firmware releases and redmote still froze every 10 min on our last shoot...redmote pro can't come fast enough, if it's even a thing any longer.

I think it's fair to discuss the problems with the Redmote in light of this announcement. Red has never publicly addressed the major problems with this device. They should have been recalled and replaced with a design that actually works. I guess they kind of tried to do that with the new antenna but it didn't fix the problems. Because they are now selling another wireless device, it would be nice if the problem with the Redmote was addressed, explained, and truly corrected so we would be reassured that this wireless device won't have similar problems. Is the Redmote not based on 2.4GHz transmission like the new RED LCS?

The rest of the world still uses D-Taps. Please stop suggesting we close off options as a product. I'd rather have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Does anyone know if the four pin power out of the Plus One Module carries enough power to run the WMD? And is that cable part of the package or available to purchase?

Thanx.. these made my day.

So badass.....

Jarred-

Another camera car / Epic picture for you... Sometimes things don't always work out as planned... If only we had the WMD for that shoot, Officer NoLove might have let us go...

Excited to see a different option besides the FIZ for this type of work...

As much as I adore RED's cameras, we are likely going to have to pass on this new FF rig for the RT motion…guess it's hard to win every battle every time. That said, YES D-tap please….

Please stop telling me what to suggest or not to suggest... Red has enough market power to get rid of the D-tap, just like Apple kills poor standards all the time, it can be a good thing with some disruption: To make an omelet, you need to break a few eggs. My opinion.

*sigh* and this mentality is exactly what comes back to bite you when you take said WMD to a job with a camera that isn't yours, and find that it's either NOT a RED, or doesn't have RED's backpack setup with lemo power output. A D-tap is far more likely on setups with external battery packs, such as Canons, Alexas, Phantoms, etc. It's adding ONE more cable to the case. That's making it infinitely more compatible.

When I rent a Preston 1 or 3 channel it comes with a big sack of cables, so that I'm guaranteed the ability to power it. That's called being prepared, not being 'disruptive.' While in a perfect world we'll all have Lemo power, that's a risk I won't gamble on, especially if I want to take the FIZ/WMD out on a job where it's not my camera, or rent it out to another 1st AC.

Jon, that's what we're asking for, that a D-tap to Lemo cable be included with the wire package. That way if you use the backpack/+1 module you can run it lemo to lemo, or you have a cover your ass cable with the D-Tap-to-Lemo for compatibility with a WIDE variety of cameras (that INCLUDES even REDs that aren't setup with the backpack or +1 module).

There's literally NO disadvantage to throwing that cable in there, if you don't use it, it's better to have it just in case. Most EPICs I encounter are setup with D-taps (which yes, can suck if the connector is loose) on the battery plates.

Oh, yeah that'd be goofy. We just want to be able to power the thing off a D-tap output from say a battery plate. My gut is that I'd like Lemo-to-Lemo on MY personal setup, but have that D-Tap to Lemo cable in the case just as a backup for older setups.

Compatibility = good. Sounds like there's already a solution.
