  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the RED 3-axis Lens Control System

Fuji Cabrio is on the list.. the WMD is compatible with it.. it was a supported lens for the ET 3D rigs. So just gotta get to a firmware update along the line.

Ok that's one more reason I must have one! Just picked up my Cabrio last month!

as someone who has worked alot with this handset in 3D I can tell you I've never wanted to smash a handset to pieces until I used that thing. At least they are not bluetooth anymore. Should fix most of my frustrations with it.

edit: Is there no replaceable marking rings? Seems like a massive design oversight. Having to write IA/CONV numbers on white tape was annoying enough but at least it only had to be done once!

Plastic strips like a bartech would be nice.

Hi Tom! I apologize for your past frustrations with the THC. I agree that the original Bluetooth wireless solution that was implemented in this product years ago did not meet our expectations. You'll be happy to know that for the last 2-3 years we have utilized a proprietary 2.4GHz FHSS solution, and we've had nothing but positive feedback about it!

You'll also be happy to know that the THC now utilizes Removable Marking Rings, and that the 3-Axis Lens Control system ships standard with 3 rings.

We've VERY proud of this system! I suspect that once you've had an opportunity to work with it that you'll feel the same way! :)

Wondering if the 4 pin accessory plug on the Plus One Module can power the WMD (with a 2 pin adapter)……..

I just went the RED showroom in Hollywood and spent 30 minutes or so with the 3-axis system. As a 1st AC and Preston owner I have 3 things to say.

1) The tiny marking rings NEED to be changed. No Focus Puller in the world would choose those over the larger Preston style ring. They are difficult to take off, feel cheap, and are too small to write legible numbers on. I think the Knob should be a uniform diameter and be able to accept preston style rings.

2) If I, for instance, set a stop of F 4 2/3 on my lens.. I want to be able to lock it in position, quickly. The store employees told me I have to hold down the limiter button for 10 secs to do that. I think that's 9.5 seconds too long.

3) A calibrate button on the WMD. One button. Done.

Other than those 3 things I personally like the system. It could use a display but I think that will drive up the price, I don't need a display that bad. Motors look great, are a little noisey but not terrible and I love the pivoting motor connectors.

and for 15K... honestly I'd put down money tomorrow if it weren't for those marking rings. I am dead serious.

As someone used to the Preston rings, that worries me a ton. Since I'd want a wide and rings to be able to throw tape and markings on for each lens.

10 seconds to lock a Tstop? Uh...RED, can that PLEASE be fixed in firmware? please?!

This looks amazing, such a powerful tool. My question is, I just run one gear for 75% of my setups, is the rig 'to powerful'?

The brain looks rather large, and much of what I do is smaller setups, handheld, movi etc.

Is there a way to run just one gear off the camera without having to mount the larger brain to run the one gear?

Thanks!

For those that prefer a bigger marking ring.....

He's already almost 7' tall - and now he's going bigger... ;-)

Seriously though, big props to Jarred and the RedTeam for their willingness to listen to customer feedback and actually re-design a product this late in the development cycle. This kind of responsiveness - even when dealing with complex, precision manufactured goods - is indicative of a company culture nimble enough to thrive as everything continues to go faster.

Now, about that UHD/4K live monitoring module... hehe

Cheers - #19

Jarred. So just to make sure I'm clear since I'm in the Abel queue for one of these FIZs: is the wider ring now standard or was this an aftermarket mod?

And can the firmware be updated so that locking the iris can be FASTER than 10 seconds?

thanks

I'd love to come by RSH and test the WMD, are you taking applications for beta testers :)

There's literally one at the Store at Red Studios Hollywood everybody can play with. I know I have!
