  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

DIY is my middle name...well intials...sign me up!

Quick question: Will RED in the UK or in Germany be able to perform the upgrade to the modular OLPF module? Because if not, it's DIY for me too :)

Elsie,

That's the cool thing about the age we live in: you don't have to be "schooled" in anything. Information is readily available. And a large percentage of these tools on-set/practical usage is subjective anyway. The playing field in many regards has been leveled. Just gotta get out and shoot. As for the DRAGON's capabilities, yes, it will generate what you want under damn near any condition provided we proceed with an understanding of the tool.

Plus, aesthetics are always changing. What is now acceptable would likely have seen DoPs fired in the not-too-distant past; thank YouTube for that.
:)
Completely agree Eryc. My concern was whether or not to spend the time learning specialty filters.

I've advanced on a broad front including shooting, editing, and medium-level post work (made more possible by apps.) As a writer of my own scripts and doing that with an understanding of directing the scenes, I feel I can create an organic movie that doesn't depend on someone else's interpretation of a part of it. Not that I won't accept input from cast and crew, but in the end I am the final arbiter over script, acquisition and post.

I think there are many others out there in the same boat. RED provided the paddle. '-)

If you have not contacted dragonupgrade@red.com to get on the list, please do so.

Are they supposed to email you back? I emailed them (on behalf of an account I am a mod for, its my friends camera and I handle the tech geeky stuff for him) but I never heard back from them... Is there no responses sent until its time to ship it in?

Addressed about 40 posts ago.

Yes, sir. I know you get it -- just trying to reinforce.

As for specialty filters, that's largely a measure of personal preference, IMO. I recently completed the first feature on my DRAGON (not even a month old) and the DoP chose to use a touch of Black Pro-Mist for a large portion of the film. Was that "necessary?" Not by any means. I find the highlight handling of the STH OLPF pleasing, and did not notice significant concerns in the toe end of the curve (we filled in when necessary to deal with underexposure). Even though 90% of our little genre picture was captured with minimal-to-no lighting instruments (we strategically staged action to take advantage of available light through subject/camera staging), I would say the STH OLPF performed wonderfully. Maybe the Lowlight OLPF would have been even better, but I felt the STH works just as well -- even under very challenging lighting conditions.

But with choices comes confusion in some circles. (not directed at you - writing in general)

Update...
* For the brave souls wishing to explore option of updating themselves, we have confirmed a DIY process. Documentation is about wrapped up. Next will be a video showing the process. In addition, we are making a custom, machined tool for you to be able to properly clamp on the rubber gasket you will be removing. Those are being machined as we speak. As soon as the whole DIY kit is ready, we will reach out to the people who showed interest in this option.
Brent, I'm one of the brave souls in question…however…will we have a chance to see the video and documentation before committing to the DIY route? Now I'm having a few second thoughts, lol...

I too find the SiTH OLPF more pleasing than the LoL one. (I know those are misspelled, but if they frown on v-1 or v-2 reference, I need something to separate them in my mind '-)

I took note of this (we strategically staged action to take advantage of available light through subject/camera staging)

I think a major production would have taken a hammer and forced the scene to be shot as originally laid out. The fact you had the leeway to use a paint brush to re-paint the scene is pure Indie and is what allows us to sneak in to the metaphorical movie theater without having to pay full price. '-)

Ding. Ding. Ding. Exactly, Elsie.

Irrespective of what comes, or any qualitative judgments on the content -- we have the tools now. And we're using them. I'm just getting started. He - he - he. The STH OLPF is great, but with the beauty of RED's modularity, I can look forward to experimenting with other choices, as well. Is that for everyone? Nope. But for this little nobody, indie filmmaker, I'm beside myself. :-D

Hi, once the other OLPFs become available, are we gonna be able to choose which one you can get the camera with? I am planning on going with the scarlet to scarlet dragon route. Would this also apply to the upgrade if posible. I.E: choosing the Dragon Standard OLPF with the upgrade. Thanks

From the sound of it you can speak to your Bomb Squad Rep and get that sorted when the time comes for you. Just make sure you inform them when you order exactly what you want in there.

Got my email for the OLPF upgrade last night, keeping the highlight protection. But also getting the low light just incase client or multicam wants/needs it. Can't wait to ship it this week!

anyone else received the email or did the self install yet?

Good to hear that they are coming. will click my inbox a bit more frequently now :)

Questions did you ask to send your camera in or will you do the installation your self.

I believe they are first responding to anyone who emailed RED about the user upgrade kit. Not people who placed a order first. As my email is a response from Alan at RED and telling me RED is ready for the camera to be shipped back.
