  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LA, Je T'Aime / LA, I Love You - Experimental Short

i use traditional controls.
I use: cameraRGB/RedGamma2
iso as shot, i think mostly 320-800
i crank up saturation to 1.2-1.5 depending
I crush the blacks.
Then play with color wheels depending on where an image wants to go...
like some outdoor stuff felt bluish, some subway - greenish etc

Thank you Stefan. Yes it's shot on Anamorphic Lomos. they produce a 2.4:1 cinemascope ratio, 2x unsqeezed and of course the anamorphic look.
my only drawback is I wish for an anamorphic sensor and more height so I can have less of a crop on the lenses.
I've been watching your short film a couple of times now and I have to admit that I love it. It amazes me how it looks...

Could you share a few details about the shooting ? I seems to me that a good part of it was shot wide open - which may give that very pleasent softness.

Did you use one single lens - and if so, which one ? With which mount ? How do you pull focus ? I would like to test one by myself, but have no idea where to buy one and what price I should pay for it... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Even though the Lomo lens was important for achieving that look, I guess that the EPIC 5K sensor just handles light in such a beautiful way. But most importantly, it is without no doubt, your skills that make the difference...

thanks stefan.
the lenses are t2.5. I shot at either 2.8 or 4.
the glass is 20-30 y.o. and is soft wide open. T4 is probably your best bet. But these imperfections coupled with a 5ksensor I think is a great combination.
i used 35mm and 80mm. I also have 50, but haven't used it just to be more effective. We shot in one day.
I kept the camera on the monopod pulling focus myself off the lens barrel, although my lenses have proper focus gears for more refined shoots.

Lomos are old lenses. They are hard to find especially in the US, many are in a bad shape due to age, hard to fin a technician to care for them, etc. you can expect to pay $1k to 8k per lens.
they usually come in OCT-19 mount, which you typically rehouse to PL (additional $1k+ cost) or there's an OCT19 mt available for epic as well now.

i think zeiss made a press release that they will be announcing anamorphics line in 2012

Thanks Alexander, much appreciated.

If I may suggest something, I think that you should definitely consider making a experimental feature film. I would love to see a 80 minutes story like yours. Maybe with a few dialogs or maybe not.

Just my 2 cents.

Bump. Hope that everybody gets a chance to see this short... :-)

Alexander, how and how much did you crop the image ?
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing that you only did a vertical crop until you reached the 2.40 ratio.

haha, stefan u really like it:)

i did not. anamorphic gives you 2.4:1 with 2x horizontal squeeze.

however lenses do cover a larger area that gets cropped by the height of the sensor. the best sensor would be a 4:3 for this.

you could of course crop spherical to 2.4:1 - it will give you the anamorphic ratio but not the look

I have to admit it... :-)

Very interesting - I really thought that you needed to make a vertical crop in post in order to avoid something like this :

This is very good news.

Would this work shooting 4K too ?
