  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

I think RED should restrict buying access of these OLPFs to only people with valid camera serial #, that will reduce the possibility of renters having access to it and prevent random swapping on field by renters.

I disagree with this 100%. Rentals are covered by insurance. We are all professionals here. We should be able to change interchangeable OLPF's that are specifically designed to be interchangeable. If a renter scratches the sensor it's the same as if they drop the camera. That's what insurance is for. I don't want my creativity hindered by a rental company. If they don't allow me to change my OLPF, they won't be getting my business.

I generally agree with this attitude but the problem is that damage to an OLPF can be very subtle damage. Changing the OLPF is in my opinion akin to opening up a lens and servicing it. It's something that shouldn't be performed in the field and definitely shouldn't be performed by a renter without at least receiving prior permission so that the rental company can specifically check the sensor after the camera is returned for damage.

I would agree with this and it should be specified in the rental agreement. Furthermore, RED should provide some sort of tamper tape to single camera owners who rent and rental houses alike so they can detect if an OLPF was changed without permission being granted except for trusted rental customers. The wide range of expertise among those who rent cameras just makes this something too delicate an operation to throw open to all.

+1

It would also, albeit not likely a great amount, attenuate the successful theft rate of cameras... I, for one, have , in my Rental contract, a prohibition against the client even changing firmware, without my written consent. Imagine a new Beta, that the client uploads and it bricks the camera....

Of course, safeguards could be put into the Rental contract, i.e., greater security deposits, mandatory RED evaluation reimbursement-$100, etc..

Thank you very much

Well everyone's entitled to their opinion....

I try to make life as easy as possible for those who rent from me. It's pretty simple- I stand by what I send out, because I take the time and have the skills and tools required to know everything is right.

while you rent the camera you can do whatever the hell you want with it, as long as it comes back to me with nothing more than hours on the clock. Everything else is chargeable. I've yet to have a complaint levelled at that policy.

I would like to see the OLPF exchange video, is there an option to have a sneak peak before I decide to drop of the camera or do it on my own (I got my e-mail today)

Thanks.

Edit: to answer this question, the movie is not yet released /edit.

Got, email today aswell. Will go for the "do it on my own" option. Do not want to send the camera around and hey I'm from IKEA country so how had could this be, just follow some instructions and be done with :)

So, any word on when the other OLPFs are going to ship? And I don't mean IR, etc. I'm talking about the Low Light OLPF.

For example my camera is heading back tomorrow, and I just found out that while it's being upgraded to the modular OLPF (skin tone highlight) there's no LLO OLPFs shipping out.

Is there a timeframe for the additional OLPFs like the LLO to ship? I guess I'm just concerned that I'm doing this upgrade and running in place.

I'd love to feel more confident about this upgrade if I knew that the 2nd OLPF would be available...soonish, otherwise I don't know why I'm even sending it in, in the first place.

I'm in the same boat - I'd prefer to do the upgrade and get both OLPF options at or near the same time. The current V2 highlight skintone OLPF is a complete monster w/ daylight and well light scenes

Brent, how it was related to me was that if you want the Low Light OLPF you can get that installed, BUT to get the Skin Tone OLPF separately wasn't possible since the OLPFs by themselves weren't shipping yet.

Ideally I'd like to have my camera installed with the STH OLPF, and to have the Low Light included when it was shipped back (obviously I'd pay for that before the camera shipped back) so I could try both out.

So given that clarification will those move from 'coming soon' to shipping right quick? i.e so we can make the modular OLPF...ya know...modular?

regarding the conversation on the prior page...changing OLPFs is like changing ground glass, or air blowing a sensor, ACs can do it on any job. If your worried to let a client swap OLPFs how do you let them mount a lens? seems kind of silly to restrict them in this way, otherwise why even upgrade your model to the swap system if you want to restrict your clients options?

as for whats shipping, I ordered my low light OLPF and am on the list...I wish I had been paying more attention on RU, I am late to the party a bit.. Hope to see it in person soon though, I never had the first low light OLPF so its exciting to see the improved one! thanks

I just picked up my 2nd Dragon (Battlet ested) after the install of the interchangeable OLPF. I had the choice of either current OLPF, but a second OLPF is not currently available for purchase, at this time. I was told that those would ship at the end of this month. It makes no difference which OLPF you chose to have installed, BTW, still no second OLPF available at this time, for purchase.

Have to say, that Beta firmware and Switchblade is a very keel upgrade... Shooting tomorrow.

Thank you very much

I just got a notification from Fedex / Red and as far as I know I have not ordered anything else than the two olpf's from them.. so yes looking forward to see the delivery guy.
I asked for the DIY solution will let you know how that goes :)

Nick, the email said an install of a pin specific firmware would have to be done to recognize the camera as having changeable OLPF capability. Were you able to get that in the 5.3.9 Beta?

Same here, but it sounded to me like that program hasn't been implemented yet? Do you have confirmation the kit is being sent?
