  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Incredible...

Well, I'm still #27 :-)

I would agree on over 10,000 units for the DSMC lineup (Scarlets + Epics) but you think there's a market for over 10,000 $60,000+ systems out there (regardless of who is making it)?

On the topic of this thread, just got back from an insane weekend of shooting with the Red+RPPs and am trying to catch up! Pics look awesome.

Shawn good working with you this weekend. Speaking of #27, maybe I should get you to order my scarlet when it comes out to keep my # low. :drool5: haha.

Everything is looking great guys, thanks for all the hard work.

BTW On-topic: I'm loving the look of the epic and all of the configuration capability really is incredible.

Two questions:

One: As long as you are here, care to throw out any hints on the Epic-X schedule. :)

Two: Will the 645 brain be the same physical size as Epic-X or do the brains scale up in size for FF35 and 645?

ONE- first post Jim said update on schedule would be toward "end of month"
TWO- Good question, im assuming larger given the renders... it and esp 617 are HUGE sensors!

THREE- Is the actual surface as GLOSSY as the renders? The EPIC is so gorgeous i'd be afraid to use it for fear of scratches in the field. ;)

First let me say how excited I am about these new renders on this thread...sweet stuff!

Assumptions about motors on lenses, and powered features of the new cameras, just may (and I emphasize may) depend on what lenses, mount, and model of the new RED cameras you're using. The fixed lens Scarlet has been mentioned (see disclaimer) as having a "Fly by Wire" mode if you so choose to shoot that way - and I would guess also part manual, and manual operation of functions if you choose that. Each project could necessarily call for a slightly different way of setup and operation of that camera.

Beyond that, the 12/3 announcement (again see change disclaimer) mentions that the new RED mount will be a smart mount (I.E - electronics capable), and that the new RED Electronic Lenses will feature auto focus and image stabilization - which would naturally be supplied through the contacts on the new RED mount. In DSMC mode those are very useful features for certain types of stills photography (EG - sports, nature, etc.). It is also within the realm of possibility that auto features on the DSMC cameras may also work in motion shooting mode - AF, IS, etc. - just like a DSLR. If you think about it the new DSMC cameras are in technology "DSLRs on steroids" anyway - but obviously shooting higher frame rates.

A motor attached to a lens? As examples, a B4 2/3" HD EFP/ENG zoom is powered by a removable servo-zoom unit. RED One has the capability of using those B4 2/3" zooms, and powering their servozoom units through a hirose to 12v cable plugged in to the smart side of RED One. I'm one of the few who has shot a RED One that way. I don't do it regularly, but I have done it at times in 2k, with B4 lenses.

For some time now I've been proposing here on RED User a new 3-Way Zoom to be in the line of new RED Electronic Lenses. Will such a zoom be made? I don't know. If it is made, what technology will it use? Mostly 35mm stills lens technology, but a very advanced design from it. Such a zoom would have gears, an optional servo zoom rocker unit which could be attached to those gears, and the lens would be used like a B4 lEFP/ENG zoom lens (shoulder or tripod) for shooting either hybrid style or EFP style. When you detach the servo zoom, and want to shoot cine style you could also then attach a follow focus to those same gears, put on a matte box, and shoot cine style with the lens (all manual). If you wanted to shoot in straight DSLR style with this lens, you'd have auto functions like AF and IS (should you want/need them, and they stay in RED's specifications for the cameras and RED Electronic Lenses), and you'd be able to power the zoom function from the same servozoom rocker unit.

Am I saying RED will make such a lens? I don't know. Would such a lens have massive utility across all four industries Epic and Scarlet service (cine, hybrid, EFP, stills)? Yes, definitely. Would hard core cine style shooters go for such a lens? Probably not, because they're comfortable with the cine lenses they traditionally use. Would those who shoot all four styles (cine, EFP, hybrid, stills), and/or any of those styles (except strictly cine) go for such a lens? IMO yes - in a major way. It would be the lens that lives on their camera most of the time because of its broad utility capabilities.

I don't manufacture cameras, lenses, or accessories - but I do beta test a lot of them, use them heavily in my work, and know what the equipment needs are across the multiple industries I service. There may very well be economies of scale and tech issues that could delay the manufacturing of such a lens. But if so, they need to be addressed, and the lens then built.

Depending of course on the finalized specifications, with these new RED cameras, depending on what camera model, lenses, and accessories you're using, you may shoot all auto, selectable part auto, and/or all manual. Wouldn't that dovetail nicely with the modular, flexible, and utilitarian concepts of the new cameras ? It may take a while to get such a lens and its accessories manufactured, but I think it would be well worth it. Just sayin'...

Again, I'm not saying any of the above is happening or isn't happening with the new cameras, lenses, or accessories. What I am saying is that it is good food for thought.

Outside of what Jim and other RED Team members have posted on this thread, everything else is conjecture at this point - including this post of mine. When they finalize the tech specs for the cameras, then we'll have a good idea of all the uses and utility of the cameras, lenses, and accessories. Whatever happens, RED Team has my solid vote of confidence.

Fun times ahead gents...and thank you RED Team for all your hard work and the exciting new products...much appreciated :)

Brains scale in width with increased sensor size. It isn't just the sensor width that needs to be taken into consideration, it is the whole sensor package.

Thanks for moving that. Appreciate it.

Totally agree Gibby. I have just purchased a RED ONE, my first and one of the big hang ups I had going across was having to buy so much separate glass. As a one or two man crew it was a bit scarey thinking you have to take all your field gear plus 7-9 kg worth of glass just to be able to cover a range of shots. I have opted for a Nikon set-up in the interim because I think this is the closest I'm going to get to EFP on a RED.

I might be totally off, I just hope the new cameras (which just look the goods in size and specs) will make use of the AF and stabiliser functions.

The finished bodies and parts will not glossy... or shiny. :-)

Jim

When Epic and Scarlet come out, will the RED ONE continue to be sold or will it be discontinued?

They will continue to be sold new or upgraded and rebuilt from trade-ins. They won't qualify for trade-in towards EPIC however.

Jim

I think so. Why would they make different (additional) one for the fixed scarlet?

I never thought of it that way but according to the announcment on RED.com the Scarlet 2/3 without a lens is 2500$. The body with the lens is 3000$ which means the lens will worth about 500$. The complete kit was supposed to be 3750$. A complete kit in my understanding would be: single CF module (something to record on), the smallest LCD (cost effective) and a batterymodule which is the red handle I guess (or do you think a batterymodule will be cheaper than the RED handle?).

So LCD + CF side module + REDhandle = 750$?
8x 2/3 zoom lens 500$?
It really seems like they care about people with small budgets! Gotta love them for that! I hope that was a part that has not been subject to change to much. Otherwise it will be a long time before I'll have a Scarlet...

Everything is a part of "subject to change...".

Jim

I just checked the Epic/Scarlet section on red.com, and I noticed the prices aren't up there anymore. Is there anything we should be worried about? I'm kinda freaking out a little bit...

Seems like a bit of a "statement", I agree...

Worried +1

These look so sweet. I almost feel like I'm in a chocolate store.

Many worry about everything... it is human nature. We feel like we have a pretty good track record so far (except for meeting schedules). Relax until we give you a real reason to worry. Some things will go up, some will go down. Since "everything has changed" since last November it is time to wipe that from your mind and prepare for the final pricing.

Jim

prepare for the final pricing.

Jim

Will that come with the schedule-announcement?
Will there also be full feature specs?

Just curious.

(and a worrier more than a warrior I admit)

I'm sure the pricing will either go up or down a bit, but not too terribly much from that old price guide.
A few more weeks people, then we will know (almost) every answer to most of the questions that keep getting asked.
Can't wait to give you my money RED team! Been saving all of '08 and '09..

In short, whatever happens, the DSMCs will be worth every penny. :)

An update to the website to have Scarlet and Epic sections more like the current RED ONE one would be nice... It's a little annoying having to load so many images every time I want to check one little spec with the current page!

If we were ever to do a mattebox, it would probably look like this.

Jim

Please make this... the other lightweight mattebox options out there leave a lot to be desired.

Something is confusing me Jim ? Sorry to ask you again but I'm not a very fluent english speaker and I want to get some more info on this

IF I buy a RED ONE today do I qualify for trade-in for an EPIC , EPIC X , ... ?

IF I buy a RED ONE after EPIC is out do I still qualify for trade-in for an EPIC, EPIC X ?

Thank you for your support
