  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Incredible...

Has there been a render of the actual Epic-X package showing just the stuff we get for the upgrade price (no additional accessories or additional modules on it?)

ergonomics :

I love my Red, but I do not like that its a bit clumsy. My hopes for Epic were compact and contained, less wires connecting everything and more portability. Out of all the camera spec increases, that's the one thing I think is worth paying an upgrade price alone for. That's hard to tell from these renders right now.

It looks like they offer many configuration possibilities, but my main hope is that there will be a solution where you can go from shoulder mount to tripod mount in a matter of seconds, without having to take multiples pieces on and off the rig with screws. And leave it set-up so you can just strap it in a camera bag when you're done ready for the next day's shoot.

I know I'm not speaking for the ultra pro cinema crowd here, but when I look at the ergonimics of a broadcast HDCAM I think 'that's nice'. I'd forgotten how good it was just to lift a camera up off the tripod, bung it on your shoulder and shoot in a matter of seconds. Right now with all the attaching I have to do to my Red, it takes 5 mins to assemble out of the bag, plug in my cradle/drive, lcd, evf, power up. Decide whether I'm shoulder mounted or tripod mounted as that dictates what I screw to the bottom of the Red. A lot of other indie shooters I talk to feel the same way 'great image, fiddly set-up'. I cant put it like this in a camera bag because most of the accessories hanging off would be damaged and I dismantle it all before I put it away for the day.

Is this something you think you have significantly addressed with Epic or are you really aiming at a the top end where modularity is more important than ease of use?

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive and Im keeping my fingers crossed that there is some middle ground. The main advantage I see is that the battery unit is now part of the body in Epic (big step forward), but it's hard to tell about the other issues from the renders. It looks like for owners of the old tech, our LCD's/EVF's will still be hanging off arms on the side with cable runs, but the new units looks more integrated hopefully. I haven't yet seen if you'll be able to have a shoulder mount and tripod mount in one configuration.

Oh the wonderful world of "modularity." I'm on your side Karl, I am a cinema man but I would still like to not have to spend 5+ minutes to switch from hand held to support setup. It should take less than one, that way I can spend more time sitting on the dolly and less time dicking around with fun things like messy cabling.
