  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Incredible...

As mentioned earlier, SD cards are so cheap you could use them like tape: shoot once, put to archive. Not so with CF cards, currently at least.

Of course, the whole issue is moot, unless there's fast / reliable enough SD cards available... not sure if there are.

Couldn't you just load it into your computer and then copy it to a SD-card and store it? In that way the read/write speed wouldn't be a factor.

Sure, but the idea was to have an instant backup, no copying involved (except for copying the footage to computer for editing): that's how it works with tapes.

I'm gonna go ahead an up my prediction on EPIC sales to over 10,000 camera bodies.

Well, I'm still #27 :-)

I would agree on over 10,000 units for the DSMC lineup (Scarlets + Epics) but you think there's a market for over 10,000 $60,000+ systems out there (regardless of who is making it)?

On the topic of this thread, just got back from an insane weekend of shooting with the Red+RPPs and am trying to catch up! Pics look awesome.

That SSD module looks interesting. Is that a 2.5" OEM SSD drive stuck in there like a CF?
Can you fill it up, switch to CF, swap out SSD and switch back to SSD all while recoding?

Cliff!

It's also interesting that single SSDs are now going to be available. I guess the speed and added capacity from RAID 0 is no longer necessary with the new generation of devices. Will any SSD work in there? Will 3rd party SSDs need to be RED-certified? Will MLC SSDs be supported?
Lots of possibilities here!

c!

Just curious, I saw the CF and SSD module, and Henry brought up a point I didn't see answered. Could one dedicate "stills" to CF and "video" to SSD? And true the SSD doesn't look like 2.5", is that a proprietary RED SSD? Is that removeable? If so could one hot swap? How does it interface with a CPU? Sorry for all the questions, the renders look SICK!

Tape

Um, but tapes take just as long to duplicate (and ingest to an NLE system) as their record length .. not true on a file based system.

Multiple Modules

Multiple Modules

Very excited about the SSD module and the potential for 3 CF slots.

Wondering if I have 3 CF cards mounted to the camera will it roll over from one card to another.

Then I'm wondering: can I attach multiple SSD modules or multiple CF modules.

Thinking this might be useful for underwater, aerial, car mounts etc. where we'd like to just keep rolling.

Peter- are you aware the batteries themselves are hot-swappable? If you need less weight you could only mount 2 as opposed to four.

I understand that, but the module is twice the size it could be with the shorter version. This will have a major impact on aerial rigs and other portable version, underwater housing, etc...

Again - this is not an demand - just a thought...

 Peter

Lots of reasonable thoughts, a few completely wrong assumptions and the wrong place to have a long Birger/Canon mount discussion... just in case this gets out of hand here.

Point taken, post deleted and moved to the birger thread:

BTW On-topic: I'm loving the look of the epic and all of the configuration capability really is incredible.

Two questions:

One: As long as you are here, care to throw out any hints on the Epic-X schedule. :)

Two: Will the 645 brain be the same physical size as Epic-X or do the brains scale up in size for FF35 and 645?

Now I'm starting to wonder if that SSD module isn't in fact a double header too.
Anything you can share on this module, Red Team?
