  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Turns out that I had a bad CF module, Red overnighted me a new one free of charge and now my Red works perfectly. I just got back from a full-day of shooting (my first real Red job) There wasnt one problem what so ever. (We shot in Rain, Direct Sunlight and Indoors and the Red performed flawlessly) Thanks to Red for the great service to your customers!

Hi,

I have only had this happen on one card's footage but:

I shot 4k 2:1 RC28 to Red CF cards. When I transfered the footage to view, I checked the proxies and they had flashes of weird textures and "checker board"-like semi-transparent flashes. They made the footage not usable. Just to be sure the CF card reader wasnt being funny, I transferred it using another CF card reader and I had the same problem. It shows up in the proxies, Red alert, and on tiffs created from red alert.

I havent had any problems with Red yet, (And I recorded some more on the same CF card again and the footage was fine) but I dont want this to happen on my first Red job on wedensday.

What happened and how can I avoid it?

Thanks!

No, not at all like that. Its like a large melted-looking semi-transparent checkerboard pattern. It strobes on half of the frame and is different every time it comes up. Sometimes its only in the shadows as well. It looks like some sort of compression error and the blocks of the patterns are about 5 pixels across each.

I just got a response from the bomb squad so hopefully we can figure this out.

I've had what you're talking about. It used to plague the very early cameras that had old CF modules installed [fixed with a replacement by RED], then it plagued some during cold weather [fixed with X bodies]. Lately the only time I've seen it was with a cheap CF card reader [Best Buy special]. Since you said you tried another CF reader with the same issue...

The solution would be to reformat your camera. You should open up a support ticket if you haven't already... and shoot RED some pictures of the issue once they've responded.

You know, know that I think back, I'm not so sure it was the drive - it could have been the CF. I've used the CF very little (mainly going to the drive), but on that shoot I did use a combo of CF & drive.

I'm sending stuff to Red on Monday. If it is a CF thing, perhaps I need that addressed too.

Edit: I should point out, I have not used the CF cards since, so that could also explain why I have not seen it again.

Ok I just opened them up in FCP and Redcine too, I get the same problems at the same frames.

Here are some frames with the weird stuff:

Hopefully, I just have a bad CF card...

Update: This is now happening about 70% of the time on different CF cards. When I play back the clips in camera it says "ERROR- Codec_Fault" I am only recording 4K 2:1 at RC28 (with not so sharp lenses either) and I am not mixing frame rates or project settings.

Weird. I hope I dont have a dud.

Been there.

Wish I had better info for you. It did not go well.

I Feel your pain - this happened to me on my first real red job. I think it was a bad CF module ( the part built into the camera ) but never really got a solid answer from Red at the time. Talk to your rep and probably prepare to send your camera back.
