  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Incredible...

Right on Jim...modularity to the max...lovin' that :)

Modularity obviously enables broad utility...

The team at RED and the products they are producing will be the strongest contender we've seen in years for industry awards. Their work is creating a seachange in the industry and having more of an impact on the way we capture images than any single product I can remember. The EPIC is looking absolutely phenomenal in its design and execution. I can hardly wait to upgrade when it becomes available.

That said, I have two questions that renders or photos can't help me on;

Sensor alignment - same procedure as on the RED One or ???
(There are a number of products to assist in alignment recently released - I would like to make an informed purchase decision in the coming week(s).

HDSDI output - might we see 1080 out of this port?
(Thinking of live multi-cam projection while recording RAW for post).

Thanks again for the fantastic work!

Awesome renders ...
I just finished phase one: "savin alotta money up" ...
now i could proceed with phase 2: "buying one of these beasts" ... he he
man ... im lookin forward for phase 3: "shootin"

so

Dear Maestro Jannard

Any Renders from the fixed Scaret ?
Or maybe a handdrawn sketch ?

Please! ;-)

Price, availability, options. I've shot in locations where you could only find SD cards in the nearest town before and that can be a life saver...

okay, but no-one is so silly to desperately need cards on location. So, who cares if they are available on location? you certainly buy the supports and check everything 3 times even before planning the job, and you buy the right ones, and enough of them for the job. Then you certaily bring a laptop or two, whatever it is all about, and use hdds for the boring job of backupping the potatoes. Or tons of SDs, for that matter.
But why should the camera work be limited by SDs, if they are inferior to CF?

and then, (re: price): if the cards must be Red-cards or Red-approved or Red-fast anyway, what difference is there if they are CF or SD?

If there is a single chance that you'd have to run and find some spare SDs, then I think you'd better arrive to location with spare CFs in your pocket, no?
CF may be more expensive, but have bigger capacity.
Professional still cameras use CFs.

There's always the chance that if there are SD card slots available for Epic and Scarlet that their function is simply the same as the SD card slot on RED One - as an option to use an SD card in the process of upgrading the camera firmware.

See my post #254, on Page 26. I believe Jim's renders on Page 20 and 21 of this thread are indeed a Scarlet DSMC.

Some of them sure looks like Scarlet... However Gibby, my concern is the FIXED one.

But it's pretty plausible that RED is keeping this thing close to their chest to avoid competition awareness.

Just anxious because it will be the only system I'll be able to afford by now and I desperately want to shoot RED!

Along a similar line, will HDSDI out be broadcast standard stable? Also will it support 3GHDSDI or dual link for 1080p?

Upgrade sensor of Epic-X in the future?

Upgrade sensor of Epic-X in the future?

Other than size differences, the main difference is "advancement". Each successive sensor will have a cleaner (less noisy) image which effectively increases latitude by having more useable info in the shadows. Dynamic Range is defined (scientifically) as signal/noise. Less noise is good.

As sensor technology advances, we decided to build a platform where you could upgrade to newer technology without buying a whole new camera... hence the "brains".

Specific details will be offered up (again) as we get closer to release.

Jim

Hi Jim. Love design!

Do you think it will be possible to upgrade the sensor of the Epic-X to a FF35 when that sensor comes out? I would like to be able to uprade in the future without having to buy a whole new brain.

Need new brain. FF35 won't fit into S35 package. Needs different electronics...

Christian, Jannard has stated in the past that the guts of the S35 brain would not be able to handle the extra data throughput of the FF35 sensor. The current brains are the minimum that need to be changed when upgrading to a new sensor.

EDIT: oops, the man himself beat me to it.

You have made lots of assumptions here...

Since the camera will record 5K at 100fps we need to provide for that. Heat is generated at all speeds but I wouldn't be concerned at 24fps in an UW housing (anymore than a RED ONE... actually less). The brain will "heat up" as you run up the frame rates (especially in the summer desert at high frame rates).

Jim

Jim thank you for this inspiring days, lately a feature production deserted the idea of shooting Red after a Redone failure while test shooting in the Israeli HOT desert, any chance for a cooling module for extreme heat conditions?

Thanks again.

I understand...

Beyond the FF35 Epic and Epic X I am buying, I will also buy a FF35 DSMC Scarlet and four fixed lens Scarlets. I'm deeply interested in information on the fixed lens Scarlets. They will be the small, versatile "go everywhere with me" cameras that I use for a number of things.

Yes, in today's tech espionage climate, its very wise to control the info flow on products until you're sure the competition can't damage your rollout of those products.

There's no shame in just being able to afford a fixed lens Scarlet. In skilled hands it should be a potent tool that can generate a lot of revenue - and then you can expand your kits by buying more Scarlets and an Epic.

You have an Italian name (though you live in Rio), so surely you can identify with the western phrase "Rome wasn't built in a day" - meaning you start small with anything (in this case your production business) and build it day by day - then next thing you know it is big.

Nearly all of us started small and built our business step by step over time - even Jim did that with both Oakley and RED

Jannard: I will be posting quite a few over the next few weeks until the schedule announcement later this month.

Do we have a announcement for when this scheduled announcement will be? Haha...

Given that the brain has a side CF Slot (DSMC config) and the rear add-on CF module has 2 CF slots, can we effectively load 3 cards into the camera and allow it to continue rolling onto each one consecutively. This would be a real game changer for certain applications given:
3 - 16gb cards = 48gb (24 min @ 4K RC36 16:9)
3 - 32gb cards = 96gb (48 min @ 4k RC36 16:9)

Matte box questions:
1. Looks like room for only one filter.
2. Looks too small to hold 4x5.6" filters.
3. If more than one filter and bigger than 4.5" round, if you had a deposit on this when first announced, do you go to the head of the line?
4. If that is a "sight" over the filter tray screw, can you make it S35 shape? It's going to get broken off in either shapes, so might as well make a stab at being more functional.

Hey Jim,
The exhaust vent looks cool and I am sure these babys are gonna run hot. Heat will be a demon cause it's gonna mean the rig can't go in a housing(it will fog up) so most applications under water and in atmosphere(enclosed in a barrier rig) are going to be impossible. What are the figures on the heat generation and how much worse is it at highest frame rates. I can make incredible waterhousings but gonna be tricky coming up with one that has a cooling system (though not impossible) I'm freaking out right now having watched and waited for over a year hoping for a magic wand and it looks like you have made one but it may be too "Hot" to handle for a lot of us who do work in the water and on wet sets. Some of the existing rigs that run hot are restricted to 10 mins usage even when on standby. Come on Jim tell me you are gonna release the Red super water housing with in built cooling system and pressure venting valve … I KONW you can do it.

I don't know.
Forgive my total ignorance about underwater housing, but are you seriously afraid that a hot object under the sea is doomed because of... heat?
the vast ocean is the omnipotent dissipator, infinitely more than what you need.
What about not letting the air being the carrier of the heat, but directly let the water cool the camera through the metal underwater case? The water cools everything, yes? Just make a good underwater case which transmit the heat away, from the camera to the sea.

Not sure why you would draw that conclusion... IF we were ever to do a mattebox, it would have to be two drawer and 4x5.6" filters. Just sayin'...

Jim

IF? the mattebox in the first renders on this thread seems to have the RED emblem embedded either side. It sure looks like your making a mattbox. At least i hope you are :)
