  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So, next question is, through open cl and compute api, are there any FPGA, or cheap processing array cards alternative to redrocket? That might end up one card instead of $2000 extra GPU and CPU.

I've started a thread on alternative processing solutions for redcode. People might not think it relaxants, but 8k is only the start. We can expect Red to go to higher resolutions for better 8k pixels, even 4k pixels. 8kp240 is a prized 3D display format. Sony is researching 16k+ for holographic capture on the low end. So, what are people going to do then? The solution is more specific customised circuits or light processing units to give a higher processing density. Regular CPU's and GPU's are out in the near to mid term until alternatives to silicon chips are established with many times the performance. Once you hit 16k it will be difficult. We could map a doubling of performance maybe, that is still an expensive 8k high-speed solution. Maybe a further increase by 10x with better hardware, more again with custom circuits. Custom circuits favor Red to license them to GPU manufacturers, and most have no need except to sell to people like us. However, individual custom processing circuits might access 90%+ of the processing need as less than 1% of a circuit can perform over 90% if the work, which is rather doable for a GPU manufacturer, as it is nothing compared to their circuit, and sits nicely alongside their existing video acceleration circuits (costing next to nothing per card).

Conceptually it is fine. Unfortunately it's a kludge and Apple would never do that. I don't have a problem with the more integrated AIO approach. By the time the system has outlived its useful ness -- 3 to 5 years in the case of most iMac systems -- everything is obsolete anyway. Including the display. Upgrading components here and there might buy you small performance bumps in some ways, but it costs a lot to do it that way and it's more like spinning your wheels. HP's first few generations of their Z1 AIO workstation were essentially this. It's not what the workstation market wants.

IMO, Apple almost hit the bullseye on this one. They missed a bit due to three issues: no i9 CPU option. no nVidia GPU option. their pricing is almost certainly going to suck.
 
I remember years ago asking an Apple agent approximately his much a maxed out Mac tower system would cost. He clicked through a spec and came back around 22 or $32k (around $25kUS or maybe closer to $30k at the time) on his system. He was obnoxious, so I felt very reasonable not wanting to support pricing like that).

We have fallen into a pit of price inspiring complexity, when solutions should be 4-10x cheaper. But where us thevwill. Lots of technology, but you land up waiting for the patent to nearly expire before it comes to the masses, instead we pay the price propping up inefficient players trying to maximise profit on their processes ringing more from old technology and maximising profit through suffering.

How, good is the fit between open cl and cuda hardware? If there is a much better fit with cuda code, then Nvidia might not want to compromise performance density by trying to make it a good fit for both. I'm for superior solutions, if that is what it is, but otherwise I'm also for standards. So, how is the fit guys?

Apple's OpenCL support in OSX has been abysmal at best. They are migrating everything to Metal 2.0.

Yes. I think Apple should immediately decide to make the update cycle no less than 6, no 10, years for all of its products. Of course, all of its competitors will follow suit because, well, after all, Apple is the leader in the industry. So, then, the environment will improve, even without the U.S. in the Paris accord and, as for jobs and the economy.... well, we don't have to worry about that because the Republicans will just lower taxes and that won't be a problem.

I'd be very interested… no, make that amused, to see you list other competing personal computing device companies' efforts in terms of managing their environmental footprint.

Then it finally ending up on a dumpster to be completely recycled (with any luck)...because in 2017 a $250B hoarding company presenting itself as forward thinking and environmentally aware is incompetent to make a re-usable chasis and a fully modular computer with minimal waste created and energy used compared to producing, transporting and recycling the whole frikking thing.


It is widely known that all the parts of new upcoming environmentally friendly wrapped, non-upgradeable soon-to-be-obsolete devices grow on trees somewhere far east, where OEM's exist and people wear breathing masks daily due to local fashion, while pink unicorns drink from crystal springs, roaming the pure flower fields in harmony.

Keeping a product going then recycling is better then recycling them more often. But what you can do, us sell the old one, so it gets used maybe another 10 years. This is the reality. What us no good for you, once cleaned up, maybe OK for somebody with less workload.

But, it is the way the industry is art up that produces the problem. They make parts upgrading technical and so not easy for non technical people to do, resulting in more system changes. Motherboards can be made as a slide out board with a card like I/o header at the end and with processor on card. All you do, is pull the cards up (you could have a holder frame for all the cards with a little lever to do that, and lever it down after) you lever the cards away, slide out the mother board through the case edge, slot in another, and lever the cards back in, simple. But you can integrate the lever and motherboard pop out in one action. To replace CPU you pop out the CPU card as quick as an old video game cartridge, memory could he done simpler. Once things are popped in,the system automatically reconfigures, and you may have some parts to sell to somebody else instead of them buying new parts. Simple, and people don't need to buy as much material bulk. But recycling is more sexy, from a business point of view, as you get to make more new systems. The viro's are barking up the wrong tree, making products that last longer and are used like that, then recycled, is the answer.

Now, eventually we will have computers that will be plenty for maybe 40 years, maybe a thousand, within 20 years maybe. What do these people know, some of them a lot more than they are telling you. Again, the government can mandate case construction like this (and pay me a royalty).

Now, one thing I was interested in years ago, was a wider spread use of ceramic technology to replace/displace many plastic and metal uses. Most poor countries can access this, and not be so poor. You use solar power to generate the power for it. The ceramics can literally last thousands of years if needed. Boom, a lot of issues diminish. But people play dumber. Now, if Jim, Erton etc, want yo be environmentally active, they can talk to me about stuff like this. In my younger days I looked at heaps of problems, and have a library of solution design proposals in my head.

Maybe Hrvoje is referring to parts of the world that don't have good recycling programs that get close to 100% of the junk.

In something I saw today, we are being warned people all need to upgrade our iphones or miss out in future vr apps (whooppy do). Like saying the iwatch is a game changer, and you need to buy one. More recycling.

Yes. Who was the moron who came up with personal responsibility anyway? It would be too cool to have apple assign a personal assistant to every iPhone owner that would just tag along, silently, waiting for that iPhone owner to hand over the phone at their leisure when they were done with the phone. Slightly more cumbersome than the established recycling program that already exists (given that Apple's products are recyclable—the whole point of choosing certain materials over others) all over the world, perhaps, but Apple has that heap of cash to spend and could afford to pay these assistants. Unemployment would go down too.

This is trickier. What gets produced must be recycled. What's recycled can get re-produced... Hmm.. But that damn transport... Wait! Let's not make a couple of hundred flights to transport 80 million phones, but let all the buyers fly in to Shenzhen themselves! One flight per 50 users let's say. Now, 1.600.000 flights might seem like a lot at first, but don't forget the boost in tourism in Shenzhen. And if some people decide to settle down there, they won't even need that stupid return flight after they picked up their phones.

Seeing how easy it is to fix these environmental issues, I guess it's just a question of "being a good guy" and think things through properly.

I also hate those damn hypocritical companies that feed us their corporate BS down our throats. They'll like, build a new 100% solar driven HQ that even feeds the energy surplus back to the local community just to make them look good, while at the other side of the earth they build iPhones. It's "sleight of hand" people.

LOL....hey Andrew you got me on that one. You win.

The company shall not be questioned. It really really cares about the society by shitting on someone else's lawn on different side of the planet, taking US jobs abroad to worker drones working for peanuts, making soon obsolete top priced devices with inferior performance with repetitive product design flaws and piling up money on re-selling someone else's work with marginal developments instead of investing back into the system it takes it from. I see the economy is doing great, especially middle class, and masses are quite satisfied with their life googling for jobs by doodling on a new and improved $1000 phones they will run to buy again in 2-3 years through perpetual debt because their last one which was 40x faster then the first one got too slow and uncool.

I may be mistaken here and producing, transporting and completely recycling non-upgradable top-priced devices with new sets of accessories and peripherals makes complete sense and actually takes less resources and creates less pollution than just upgrading their parts. And perpetual rise in sales actually comes from fully recycled old devices although sold in smaller numbers and not in any way on newly dug and processed ore and rise in OEM industry, which of course mostly runs on renewables with zero environmental effect.

I look forward to entertaining the fanatic pack with future "embarrassments", especially those related to dinosaur/parasite/tumor principle manifesting, mass lobotomizing entities.
