  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So Apple just teased the iMac Pro for later this year. Xeon Processor, 128GB RAM, 4 TB3/USB-C...

I know most of us are eagerly awaiting the MacPro redesign for next year, but I gotta say, this looks pretty great as well. May be a great stop-gap or secondary system. Heck, it would probably hold it's own as a primary workstation for many of us.

Apple also teased external GPU support for MacBooks, which would logically spread across the Mac line. So far they only mention AMD support, but with NVIDIA now supporting Apple with the 10 series cards, we may get NVIDIA options later on.

In any event, I think Apple is finally gonna come back to us. YAY!

My only complaint is that there isn't a 32-inch model. I dig the black. Not sure how well those Xeon monsters will do inside an AIO, as those have never been a long-term success for anyone offering them, so I hope they have some cooling wizardry. Also, those high-end GPU options better come with HBM or there's gonna be issues with heat.
 
I hope I'm wrong but they seem to be asking for trouble. How can they have enough airflow in an iMac body for cooling such monster hardware ? It will go up to a 18 core CPU... Rendering a 4K project in Resolve without any termal issues would be a miracle considering the problems folks were having with the nMP.
 
but still no cuda support since they single sourced to AMD?
 
Cooling was one of the main upgrades. From the site:

"Performance takes power, and power makes heat. To deal with it, we completely redesigned the thermal architecture of iMac Pro with innovative dual-blowers, a massive heatsink, and extra venting. The result? Almost 75 percent more airflow and an 80 percent increase in system thermal capacity. Which lets iMac Pro handle 500 watts — 67 percent more power than the previous iMac — and stay chill."

If it's any indication where Apple is going with pro hardware I'm feeling pretty optimistic. The new MacPro will have to be significantly more powerful than this iMac, so that's pretty exciting!

Yeah, I heard that line before (2013)

"The Mac Pro’s unified thermal core provides excellent cooling capacity, so it can boost its processor cores for much longer periods. The result is significantly better sustained maximum performance for the Mac Pro"
 
I never had an issue with my Mac Pros on the cooling department. Main issue for me was that the unique design ended up being unpractical for GPU makers to adopt and adapt their latest cards. That pretty much kills the ability for us to keep up with the latest GPU offerings.

I am looking forward to the next iteration Mac Pro.

HBM2 actually :-) At least that's what's showing on Apple's preview page for it.

Definitely looking forward to this, although I wonder what the price point will be for the model I would actually spec out. It's going to "start at $4,999".
 
The iMac Pro 5k will probably meet the needs of 90% of the pro editor segment without them feeling compromised for a couple of years.

But a considerably faster MacPro2 will still be required for professionals needing to train neural networks (software developers, engineers, researchers).

If Apple are able to solve the bandwidth interconnection enigma and create a 0.1 - 1 TFLOP server - this box would likely keep us all happy for more than a few years....

Melbourne Apple Store confirmed iMac Pro prices will start at circa US$5k, delivery in December in USA.

Updated Mac Book Pro available now.

The big question is when/if they give the mac book pro the kick up the backside like they have just given the iMac.

"Pro" but you are stuck with whatever you get inside and specced-up hardware in ultra thin housing for even more overheating issues.

iMac Pro is an oxymoron.
Though if the same branding logic (or the lack of) was applied to iMovie Pro there would at least be some consistency and fewer nervous break downs.

I'm expecting a Mac Pro Pro. Even more pro than Pro.

The current 5k Imacs can be considered pro, as they do some heavy lifting. I get you with the branding its a bit silly to honest, but the specs are there ECC Ram is reserved for high end workstations and servers.
 
I'll be getting one of these next year. Its everything I need as my personal machine. All high end compositing, graphics and online goes to post houses anyway. For the lightweight work and non heavy FX stuff this is more than enough!

This.

I think it will be a great FCP machine, but rendering a long and complex Resolve 4K timeline will most likely be challenging to say the least. I did watch the Keynote yesterday, and they were talking about the iMac Pro being silent, which is almost always an indicator of insufficient cooling when it comes to high end specs.

Considering the top of the line full options iMac Pro will be somewhere in the $8K - $9K range, I surely hope they can deliver.
