  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC - GPU Build REDCINE-X Beta 21

Does that mean that i will no longer need my Red Rocket card ?

Antoine

In order to match the speed of the 5 yr old red rocket at pci-e x4 speeds, you need a Titan card and 8/12 core Xeon CPU system, and the new rocket-x will be even x5 times faster. Its all relative to how fast you need the material to be transcoded, if you have a MBPR then with GPU acceleration you'll get 5-6 fps now in stead of 1-2.

If you shoot 1 or 2 days a week and don't need the material to be transcoded by wrap, then you don't need a rocket card. If you have 2 or 3 cameras on a 3 week shoot, then 50-100 fps with a rocket-x is vastly preferable to 5-6 fps with a MBPR or even 15-18 fps with a Titan GPU and 6core i7 hackintosh.

Need is a funny word. Technically you never needed a Red Rocket card. However, if you have a "need for speed" you probably still want one. If you want warp speed, you may eben want a Red Rocket-X card.

It really speaks to me of Red as a company, that they are providing all these options ... both to the high end guys and the helping the scrapper indies.

Some basic transcode speed guidelines I've found so far, based on no RedRocket

MacPro 5,1 8 core 32 GB's RAM GTX 680 GPU

RedRaw 5K 24 fps 5:1 compression 1:85 aspect ratio to ProRes 422 1080

RAM allocation and drive speed seem not to matter, as bandwidth of transcodes, and speed they're being written, doesn't even go to FW800 level

Full res debayer 8 fps transcode speed

Half res debayer 16 fps transcode

4K raw clip @ same compression, resolution, aspect ratio, and transcode specs

Full res debayer 18 fps transcode speed

Half res debayer negligibly less than real time

5KHD/4KHD raw should go a little faster than that, also we'll presumably get CUDA acceleration soon, which should also bump the speed up with this card

Basically RCX now transcodes, with a GTX 680, as fast as Resolve 9 did with a GTX 680 or nVidia Quadro 4000 - but only at half res debayer. At full res debayer, RCX is now 3-4 times as fast as Resolve 10.

Hard to imagine a company doing this, and constantly updating the software, for free, when it drastically undercuts the need for their own hardware (RR cards)

Mac Pro 5,1 12 core 48gb ram 2.4gh
3 x gtx680 (rcx21 only using one so far. And in open CL...)
5k epic plays 24fps half res from what I can tell (buffer well ahead of play head)
Full res slower, stutters (how do I see frame rate playback on RCX, I never use it)
This is very promising for multiple gpu cuda acceleration in resolve 10...

I am impressed:

5K HD (Redcode 5:1), Full Debayer: 25 fps realtime
5K HD (Redcode 5:1), Full Debayer with Post Effects, Alchemy / Unsharp Mask: 25 fps realtime

with Dual Xeon 2687 / GTX690

...and that is without cuda support.

Gordon

Is it possible to mix and match graphics cards or do they have to be the same. Ie can I add a Titan next to my gtx680?

5,1 12 core 3.33 mac pro, 64gb ram now with GTX 680 4gb to a 12TB RAID

I get 24-26fps from 4k to prores 4444 at full debayer.

I'm a happy happy boy.

+1

I have a 680 right now and want to add a Titan. Might add an 8-core to my LGA2011 board first though to see what else I can get out of the 680. Full res stutters because my 8 threads are peaked with a 4-core now.

Even though I only have 1 GTX 570, the performance boost on rendering Epic 5K to DNxHD 36 at half debayer is improved by over two thirds... this is the most awesome free thing for post production I encountered in a while! And just in time for a large feature film :)

Speaking of that, is the non-beta full release happening in October or when can we expect the real release for this? Nice to know if it will be out when shooting begins in mid-october.

I encountered some strange - if I export through "bin all clips" 5k HD to 720p prores LT,
there are random clips NOT being transcoded - out of app. 100 clips - 13 were not transcoded. (in no particular pattern).

So check that all clips are there!:)

ohh yess , i love this REDCINE-x 21 build beta....
realtime full Red EPic 5:1k 5:1, MAc pro 6.1 ( hpz820) dual 2670 8 core (32:biggrin:) + gtx 580 3gb, Mavericks 10.9 DP8

Jarred next stepp enable dual GPU :reddevil: PLEASeeeeeeee:Angel_anim:

Oh man, it was working great on my home PC.
But at the office .... It is even sweeter.

5K full debayer realtime on my overclocked but stable Xeon 4ghz, Quadro 5000 + Gtx580.
We have to test multicam on the upcoming Premiere update.

Is OPENCL and the new AMD cards better than Cuda? I read that OpenCL is 5x faster than the CPU and Cuda is 3x but they usually end with the same results utilizing the same class of cards.

I doubt it's possible to make a generalization that one is x times faster than the other or even that one is x times faster than CPU processing. It all depends on the GPU, the CPU and especially on what it is you're processing.
