  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I want to tell you...

Which includes flagging and GOBO's and all the other practical ways of manipulating light. As long as we have the information (correctly exposed) anything is possible.
Exactly. How about instead of standard choice of field of view for a camera in AE, Smoke, Flame or Nuke, now, conceivably, you could choose the actual lens type- Cook, MP, Canon, Lomo etc. So, now, when you place the "Sun" light in the distance, when that "sun" strikes the lens you get realistic lens flare, according to chosen lens. No key framing, tracking, luminance key, nothing. Just choose the camera, lens, place the light in the scene and you're done.

Or you could just hire somebody who knows what they are doing to light it right in the first place! A camera that doesn't need proper lighting or a focus puller - Do Not Like!

The technologies mentioned in this thread sound like they have amazing potential, but fixing poorly shot footage in post should be the least of anyone's concern.

Welcome to modern technology. It's just a beginning.
For example, now anyone with $1k investment in Resolve has the same technology, as the Company 3. Of coarse, it doesn't mean, that results are the same.
Scarlet will be the first truly disruptive camera, not Epic.
Don't really care for a virtual focus pulling technology. Feels more like a gimmick to me, than anything really useful in practice.
But I can see in a few years many live action films just capturing basic exposure and the rest of the lighting will be done in post. Virtual DP anyone?

Based on my experience, I think there will be a time that the awards for best cinematography will need to be shared between DP and Colorist (in some cases, the colorist does so much re-framing, add/substract light, etc that you wander who really should get it)...

I have this debate/observation all the time. Wax DJ's vs MP3 DJ's. I can appreciate every artists contribution, but no one can stop technology. If its there, some one will use it. And if its more convenient and less costly, it will probably become the norm. Film is officially dead, of course, some will never stop using it. But... in 2011, Digital Cinema is ruiling the game.
As much as I can appreciate film, its costly and time consuming.

I feel some of the best Colorist have previous experience in lighting/DP work or knowledge of both.

I come from Theater (Actor/Director/Writer) you can call that a dead medium, I've done shows with more people on stage than in the audience, LOL.
I still do it, cause I love it.
But honestly not that many people care about theater any more.

I also prefer live instruments and wax DJ's. But Resolve is pretty Damn Sick!

this is the kinda thing I want and I love. technology that solves problems. I think lots of companies are creating cameras that are trying to measure up to how things were done the last 100 years. but very few are creating cameras that will push ahead for the next 100 years. make every day problems that cause time/money and image quality issues and you'll have an on going client base forever. Im not interested in how its always been done if there is a way to make it better , easier , faster. anything that allows story tellers to focus on the story , acting , the lighting

Well said. I could not agree more.

Pay attention!!! (Jim says).

Nov 3rd rearranged, and Flip the 3 to an e.

DEV-on R

I knew my dyslexia would come in handy one day…

I.e 3rd party (development) on RED, you guys have given us more clues than you can shake a stick at …really.

3rd party LIBRARY…

One library for all cameras.

I wager there may even be a software and Possibly HW emulation (pure madness).

So you are not giving away the crown jewels but you are letting people have at least the keys to the castle.

This will be like the Berlin wall coming down at the Brandenburg gate, Beethoven’s 9th playing in the background and whole bunch of very confused looking people wandering through from East to West.

This will be a massive opportunity for anyone that has proven chops with SW and HW handed to them on a plate…

So like Ozzy Ozborne we (if this is the case) will definitely jump on the “crazy train”.

OR I could be completely nuts and this is just another massive RED herring…?

(plenoptic camera..my giddy aunt..you guys are soooo bad)…

Big CRAZY mad nut case Cheers,

Eric

Not exactly sure what your implying there, Eric, but your analysis does make me see that rearranging the date of the 3rd gives us r3d. Hmmmm... maybe that's why they chose that date. (But what would the significance be for Canon.) Oh, my mind is boggled. lol

One thing I will say is that we are working on multiple focus and depth map (think Lytros) but with wicked high resolution...

Jim

I'd be surprised if you weren't. :)

Really? A lot of the stuff on your "colorist" reel looks like it could have been improved by better exposure and lighting. You gonna fix that in post too?

A film is constructed in post today because editing became possible. Editing could always be replaced by shooting linearly and in order of the shots expected to be in the final film, but that's not how it works today. I suppose though, that before editing was an available tool, shooting linearly in the order of shots in the envisioned final film was how films were made.

New tools enable new workflows. Simple. On set roles have been changing and will continue to change.
