  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I want to tell you...

I was thinking the exact same thing when contemplating getting a Lytro toy: wonder if RED is working on something like that, too?

I hear this technology can also shift the view plane slightly... Single-camera 3D, anyone?

If the camera is capable of capturing depth map of the scene, that means one will be able to place new, virtually indistinguishable from the real light source lights in the scene. Those lights will occlude, will have volume, will be 3 dimensional and will interact with the objects in the scene. Presto- realistic, virtual relighting in post. Been waiting for that missing technology forever...

While this is cool. A depth map could be useful. I've used them to limited sucess inside AE from 3D renders now and then. But unless I misunderstand the technology, while a depth map might allow you to pull mattes , these moves will be far from perfect as the mattes will all have hard edges won't they? And you would still need roto/key to deal with semi transparent elements like hair/motion blur? Granted, might make your roto MUCH faster, but still not going to eliminate it. But again, perhaps I misunderstand.

Jim, you know what they say here:

a secret only exist by the fact of sharing it with people, otherwise having a secret is no fun to have :)

and Deanan answered:

By the time you reduce your image to postage stamp, the circle of confusion is so gigantic that focus doesn't matter.
What Lytro's refocusing does is not so much refocusing as it's selective defocus.

So, this means we are looking at a very large sensor. I also read the thesis on which Lytros is based on, and it didn't look to me like plain defocusing, but rather, having all focus points recorded and then selecting which to defocus, according to real perspective/distance

HID based laser projector?

Guess again :)

Lytro is great. Lots of Fun. What they are doing is definitely cool, But in all reality their product is not really meant for anyone over 12 years old. We took a different route, and figured out how to do it without all the massive compromises.

SICK!

+1

Which includes flagging and GOBO's and all the other practical ways of manipulating light. As long as we have the information (correctly exposed) anything is possible.

I was just wondering the other day what would happen if RED dug into this kind of stuff.... unf***ingbelievable!!!!
