  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I want to tell you...

November 3rd won't be about what we are working on. It will be about what is done and what we are ready to take orders on. Finally.

Jim

OK ... this is possibly the biggest announcement you could have made to me.

I am continually impressed with what you guys do, and how your company has grown!

I remember lamenting with Ted at a Final Cut event in DC about the low availability of Red One. Times sure are changing!

Yo, mods, somebody ban that Jannard dude, looks like he might have some inside track on what you're all working on...

But seriously, thanks for letting us know everything's going to be upgradeable. It was stated previously that the Scarlets and Epic-S's wouldn't be, and it was something that I personally found a bit off-putting. Am looking forward to the Nov 3rd announcements with renewed interest.

As for the depth-mapping stuff, it reminds me of the comments Jim made once about how (in my own words) it doesn't matter what the competition comes up with if it's just better versions of the same old thing, Team RED are taking things into whole new territories altogether, in ways that are so amazing and full of potential it's scary.

Red aren't just about making better camera's, they're also about moving cinema-making and viewing practices forward into area's that were previously unimaginable. They are being as creative in that as anyone who ends up using their products will be. And it's a pleasure to watch it happen. More power to them.

Hm, I can't figure out which "colorist" reel Brent was referring to in his post. I can't find the original post. Was it deleted?

Apparently it was. Not by me. This is what I am referring to: http://vimeo.com/29028959

There are many very artful shots, and a few that were obviously quite poorly lit. You were making the point that a fancy new camera would let "colorists" do the lighting in post. I was saying you were nuts. Discuss.

Not exactly sure what your implying there, Eric, but your analysis does make me see that rearranging the date of the 3rd gives us r3d. Hmmmm... maybe that's why they chose that date. (But what would the significance be for Canon.) Oh, my mind is boggled. lol

OK so R3d/REDCODE on everything.

Is that really big news, mmm
(you tell me),

3d scarlets is that big news , not really.

or R3d licenses , or 3rd party licenses that let us integrate the camera into other systems... [That would be huge]

that would be an industry game changer and would be VERY DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGY. Bsically we get to hack some tier or levels within RED platform.

The hints of taking a page out of Apple’s “play book”…

I mean come on guys…

I am not certain that I have the anagram or cipher right…(or at least they way it should be...)

D3 that’s 3rd party development.

D3 on R

DV3 on R

Or the folks that are more savy with proprietary formats what does 11.3.11 mean? Anyone REDUSER?

What ever they have in mind its Staring us right in the face.

This is totally mental.

Cheers,

Eric

Nothing to discuss here. You're just being being disrespectful:-)
Your behavior has nothing to do with the subject of this thread...

Mr. Blackstone your work speaks for itself. Excellent reel, beautiful work.
Real pros don't criticize other people's work like that. Totally unprofessional.

I agree. If the criticism is constructive and will actually help the person improve then it is merited, but I think in this case the person making the criticisms was being a bit nasty in trying to prove their point.

Amen to that. Jake is one of my heros. He is an incredible colorist that I look forward to emulate.

One thing I will say is that we are working on multiple focus and depth map (think Lytros) but with wicked high resolution... The prototype is incredible. Don't tell Gizmodo or Engadget. :-)

Jim
Is that where you have the two small-size imagers that give you a 3-D image with infinite depth of field, and the software then generates a contour map of image distances calculated from the parallax, so you can feed that into processing software that can selectively blur the image based on the distances stored in the contour bitmap, and so effectively dial up any depth of field characteristic in Post?
Or am I thinking of something else?

... getting back off track:

11311 is a palindromic prime number. Obviously it contains the key to the firmware code that the Epic and Scarlet share (this is not new - Jim said they had the same firmware a month or two ago). But only people like Deanan and Graeme could possibly understand it.

"everything is upgradeable." = Hint?? -->
  • the Scarlet Fixed integrated lens/sensor assembly doesn't look very upgradeable to me.
  • the store is out of Redmotes and DSMC side handles. Doesn't seem likely that RED would hold back on shipping backorders for these just to make sure they could be included in Scarlet kits.

Just sayin'....

Uh ... "fixing" footage that was lit poorly is, unfortunately, a primary task for colorists. I'm a doing a whole movie where the producer fired the DP halfway through. Things photographically went from very bad to even worse.

It will never look as good as if it was shot properly to begin with of course, but it is much improved I think.

As to Jake's reel, it looks great to me. Yes, there are a lot of shots that probably came off the camera looking nice. Without a before/after you can't necessarily tell what Jake did of course. There are also shots that should have been shot/lit better that Jake made watchable.

Can't knock a guy for doing his job!

At last, this is the news I have been waiting for. Priming the credit card.
How fortunate we all are to be bang in the middle of a Digital Cinema REDolution.

Multiple focus and depth map in a high resolution camera is the least important of what we are working on.

Jim

I am really hoping that this links in with a completely innovative and simplistic solution to S3D shooting.

In fact, I am certain that it is.

And what would be phenomenal is if this was a feature in our current Epic Ms and Xs.

S3D viewing too please :)

<< I will be quiet now and return to my editing cave in Tokyo :P

look up lytro on google, there is a good amount of publicity about their technology. you've got the general idea, but i think their technology is a single sensor, single lens system. there are other technologies in development and use that are taking concepts of stereoscopic imagery to new levels.

jim is talking about a depth map, very common to 3d computer graphics, which is a representation of distance that can be used to simulate depth of field, generate mattes without keying... among other things. cool stuff.
