  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN preorders...

I think this is a great demonstration of what HYDROGEN system will be capable of. As Jim stated in the prelude to the HYDROGEN announcement, "VR/AR is dead". This is why.

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/...t-field-technology-could-make-it-serious-art/

(also why you might want more than one HYDROGEN).

I just downloaded the app into my oculus rift. I'm honestly not using hyperbole when I say this is VR as I imagined it would be in the 70's. It's here, and it's happening.

If you have a rift or vive or windows MR device, definitely try out the demo. The best VR experience, bar none. And I believe HYDROGEN will be able to create stuff just like this.

I was told be a senior Red employee soon after the announcement that there is no performance or technical difference between Aluminium or Titanium. I ordered the Aluminium. Of course its been a long journey since then so maybe its all changed

Good to know Tom. Thanks.

So is it time to invest in a real HUD and stop messing around with cardboard?

Indeed! That was part of my point.... (^;

Well, as I am outside the US I have taxes and duty to think of, and of course I am gonna want modules. So the risk benefit of a 3rd Hydrogen seems poor compared to what limited resources I have in terms of getting the rig I want. So a pro-cinema module, based on what we know now, is something worth saving up for, unless as Jim J. did say in a post in January, (paraphrasing from memory) after we see what 4V is, we may not care much about flat video no matter how good it is in terms of bit depth or resolution etc. So that means other modules to up the game on 4V recording and playback at some point. And we do know that more hydrogen one media machines will be available soon either through a carrier, which may mean a reduced price based on those complex plans they offer, or unlocked directly from Red albeit at a higher price most likely.

So doing the math over and over and over in my head since the announcement came that pre-orders are closing soon, I think having 2 is optimal for a single user and saving up what we can for what Rumsfeld might call, “a known unknown”.
“
In this case that means, we don't know what it will be exactly but we know its coming and we know its gonna be great and we know we are gonna want it!

I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised. 2 HYDROGENS will give you 4 viewpoints to create holographic/volumetric video.

I'm dying to know how much of a volume this configuration will record.

Would early May be way to early of an prediction for pre-orders to be shipping to customers?

I'm reading Jim's comments about supply chain being a bottleneck, so who knows? But if they get those solved...

Still, Jim did seem to reassure that unlocked units will ship before the All-Carrier release date which is expected sometime in summer, so maybe sometime in May for pre-orders.

Seeing them stopping pre-orders tomorrow suggests to me that they need actual order numbers to get a handle on how many pre-orders to make.

I would add to this that Fri. may be the last opportunity to switch from Al to Ti. Wouldn't it be wild if they did away with the Ti models for the carrier release?

Hmm...Now that you mention it, that does sound like it could be a very real possibility.

But it wouldn't be good marketing to cut the supply without letting the word out first, to create a sense of urgency.

Your right of course. And the main reason I think they might have to do that is because off hand, I can't remember a carrier offering two versions of essentially the same phone with their cellular service. Doesn't mean they wouldn't, but still, a possibility.

Maybe even Jim doesn't know of that yet, although they seem pretty forward thinking so may have game-played that already.

According to Jim's latest post:

Launch date is uncertain due to supply chain issues and carrier certification. Now shooting for a date in summer so carriers can launch at the same time. Preorders will still ship prior to launch.

In the Northern Hemisphere summer begins on June 21st if you are looking to read into that on a literal level.

Another date to note that's nearby: Cine Gear 2018 - June 1st and 2nd (end of May too). That might be an approximate time to lookout for.

Processor Thoughts
I'm a man of many thoughts with a pending late spring/early summer release. The good news is the Snapdragon 800 series has some legs and will still be one of two top tier processors leading up to fall 2018, we're at the moment looking at the 835 in the Hydrogen One. However, come fall 2018 the 845 is suspected to be implemented in the Pixel 3 and various other premium Android phones. To me and considering the time frame this might be an opportunity to look at potentially implementing it in the RH1. Spec-wise the difference between the 835 and 845 aren't massive , but there are notable gains that would interest us as consumers and content creators. Namely in the form of UHD 4K at 60 fps versus 30fps (which also equates to 240fps at 1080p btw). Also, I've been told the 845 can actually capture in 10-bit rather than 8-bit, which is notable for HDR capture on the phone itself. Both the 835 and 845 can display HDR10 content.

While the nanotech holographic screen is indeed one of the killer features on the Hydrogen One, I think in reference to where we are now and the Samsung S9 and S9 Plus being released this month with the 845 followed by Sony, Asus, Xiaomi and likely Google there should be a hard look at what it takes to implement the 845 in the RH1 IMO.

Again, not a deal breaker at all, but something to note in observance of what other premium phones are doing today and by the time the RED Hydrogen One is pre-orders purchaser's hands.

5G Thoughts
Just some news on the 5G front. Qualcomm's X50 5G modem will be deployed in solid numbers in 2019. There are 18-20 carriers beginning 5G trials or starting their 5G service in 2018 globally. Interestingly there's another 18-20 device manufacturers committed to releasing 5G devices in 2019. There's going to be this really awkward time near Q3/Q4 2018 where a lot of things are up in the air on this front. Intel will have a mobile offering soon that will likely support 5G as well, which will make it an interesting battle between Qualcomm's and Intel's offerings for companies like Apple or any other hardware manufacturer who isn't very ingrained into the Qualcomm ecosystem.

Camera Thoughts
The dual cameras for H4V capture on the Hydrogen One will be really interesting and fun. There's a lot you can do with tech like this right down to enhancing depth of field effects for your captured content. In terms of where I hope the H4V motion and stills API ends up, well, Instagram and Facebook are obviously #1 in terms of where if it's implemented properly will become a super massive way to share our snaps through more produced work. Hoping it's actually easy to implement via any website myself.

I'm in Europe myself and don't even want to think about those taxes/duties that were mentioned,
and I'd very much welcome if RED could arrange logistics to ship to European customers from a
European country... My guess is that even with a 'trans-shipping' fee that would be less expensive.

BTW, if you believe in prices going up, you might consider a 3rd/4th H1 an investment opportunity... ;^)
Who knows... the price increase may help in (although likely won't cover) financing a module.
Or, prices go down, and you lose... ;^P

May have happened already. The Al price went up $100. At the time I thought it could be because of Trump's Aluminum tarrif. But with Jim saying they've been utilizing the delays from the supply chain and the carrier certifications to add new things to the H-1, it is just possible they increased that unit partially due to upgrades. So far they haven't touched the Ti but that may still happen.

One thing to consider, Red has always had more costly option on every release since the epic that just had a different shell and no extra functionality. Then it was the epic M, later carbon, then the forged weapon and the stormtrooper helium. All sold for a bit extra with no real benefits at the time of purchase. But for each and every one of them it later turned out to be beneficial when upgrading. just my guess, Ti hydrogen buyers will get something extra, more than a more bulletproof housing. Possibly a discount or first in line when modules are released.

Bought five all together 2 Ti and 3 Al.

@Phil Holland

I like your take on where currently known specs are for the H1, and where we should hope them to be. I also hope Snapdragon 845 and 5G are among the last minute "positive" changes, but who knows.

In any case, like you said, the 835 is formidable, and we know RED wouldn't release this device if it didn't do what they want it to do.

Bingo, which is why none of this is a deal breaker. Additionally the newest 5G modem isn't in anything yet, but it will be rather interesting to see how and what sort of support we who are fortunate to live in an early 5G market can use.

I've tasted 5G now. It's delicious and addicting. Like nectar to a hummingbird.

At first I was bummed about the s835 processor but to be honest I've been using it for a year now and it's a pretty speedy chip for real world use even with AT&T/samsung bloatware. I'm confident H1 will be a awesome phone. I just hope it comes with a healthy amount of ram because I don't plan on upgrading until Jim releases the next gen H2 which could be 2-4 years from now lol. I am a believer in the HYDROGEN ONE project

One other extremely late night thought/early morning thought.

Since the RH1 is built out of rather robust materials and if the form factor is something RED will stick to for a while, I wonder if there would ever be a potential upgrade path/program. That would not be a common concept in the world of mobile devices, but with carriers providing incentives/discounts to upgrade I wonder what "down the line" looks like. I'm betting at the moment that's not exactly clear, but if it takes off who knows what's exactly on the horizon.

I'm still pushing for anodized titanium or black titanium (since we truly don't know yet), or an interesting finish of some sort. Titanium is a fascinating metal and RED could really make a bold design statement there that would truly come off as "premium" and there is a spectrum anodizing can cover. You can even do some interesting orange/blue or some controlled gradients surrounding a rainbow-ish pattern for example. With the right technique you can get a deep copper-ish rusty red color that's also pretty damn nice, deep but with a sheen about it. Sort of a candy red is possible there too. Even an "old spaceship black" is doable. Perhaps a controlled dark and light pattern. I know Jim, Jarred, and Matt love materials and exploring what can be done with them. I wouldn't mind a forged carbon fiber option, but I don't know how well that particular material would be on a mobile device that will be dropped likely 4-12 times in it's lifespan. It would be interesting to know if the kevlar back will approximately match the color scheme or not, but I could see like a two tone black kevlar w/ titanium colored to some extent working as it would mirror the screen's black void qualities on the rear. I personally just don't want it to be a shiny silver-ish metal as that will distract from the screen a bit.

Whatever the case, I think a lot of us who pre-ordered are going to take some pride in showing the Hydrogen One off. Mine will be my daily driver as well as a camera control device. I truly can't express how badly I've wanted even just foolControl on Android all these years in those situations where I don't have one of my iPads with me and I need to trigger roll without vibration.

Love where your head's at on this! There are some awesome things you can do with titanium.

Here's a stupid question that I feel is worth asking
... WHY DOES RED DO PRE-ORDERS IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Rather than just go... Here you go... they're ready!

Curious as RED has capital where pre-orders are not necessity.

I LIKE the pre-order idea but curious as to the specific rationale beyond tradition and 'RED-culture".

How many hours left before the gate closes on pre-orders? (I wonder?).
