  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN preorders...

Not a stupid question, but also not likely a clear answer to be had. Bare in mind there's other companies that do pre-orders as well, but in the case of RED I can see lots of advantages to pre-orders.

For instance, in the case of the RED Hydrogen One this first batch is "Jim's first batch" and by pre-ordering you've given RED a clear idea of what the first run should be numbers-wise. Funding-wise, Jim could put the cash up for whatever amount of phones, but there needs to be a specific quantity ordered of course and there's no reason to overshoot that by a few hundred or thousand if you can avoid it.

Outside of that. RED's a private company and one thing they've always done was treat early adopters well, which is why pre-orders people will get whatever the "special surprise" is. This is an important thing actually as the success of many of RED's project hinges on the decision to jump in early and ideally doing good work with those products. This is a much bigger deal when you take into account the expense involved with digital cinema cameras, a whole line of accessories, and camera models that stretch across several market segments. RED for instance isn't going to blindly pre-fab 1,000 of camera X if they don't have those cameras moving. That's a significant amount of labor, expense, and all that.

There's another reality of going the other way, if Hydrogen One didn't receive some momentum driving pre-orders I imagine there was a plug to be pulled or perhaps something that would need to be re-examined. However, we're not in that scenario as there's been clear interest and now working phones in the hands of Jim and Jarred.

The key words of gauging interest and also the question "how much interest?", this helps in areas all across the board. Right down the manufacturing level.

That's super cool, what you write give me good "Goose-bumpies" down my spine in a good way!

Awesome!

Just always wanted to hear it from the Horse's mouth i.e. RED as to why they like or very much prefer to do that so @Phil H (thanks for that answer and clarification.... very nicely put).

Now you’re cracking me up, Eric ;)

GOOD :-) :-) :-)

As an older horseman , I have learnt over the years if you want really good and detailed answers from your vet it's waaaay better to act dumb... That way you get a lot more useful information...

If you approach the same vet having read all the latest veterinary articles, they tend to clam up and not tell you anything... ! Sometimes better to be dumb than act "super-informed ;-)"...

Eric trade secret there...

Sometimes better to leave things more unresolved and rough and hanging out there for folks that feel compelled to close the obvious gaping holes... lol.

And it moves the discussion forward rather than super complete answers ....

Who knows what the new "craft" of social media and communication will be as a result of HYDROGEN HYDROGEN network... Will the whole Forum/thread paradigm die out or give way to something else.

Since yesterday I have been trying to contact Red support to change my order to Titanium version and no one is answering the call and haven’t got a call back too.

Anyone were able to change your order? If yes how was that done!

Thanks
Uday

I once had misplaced an invoice and emailed the Hydrogen address asking if they could help me by sending a duplicate. I found it a few days later and emailed them a "never mind, I found it" message. A few days later they answered that they were glad I found it.

I would send them an email with today's date stating that you want to upgrade to Ti. I'm thinking they will eventually get back to you and your email should verify being timely.

My guess, there will be email corresponandance before any phones is shipped out and then you can swap your order. But dont take my word for it.

Thanks Dewey. I shall do that. Hoping I wouldn’t loose my place in the queue.

Can't point to it, but I seem to remember reading that we could upgrade without losing our place in line. I wouldn't put your faith in my memory accuracy, but maybe someone can verify?

I remember the same, though don't have the quote.

Think about it this way...the preorder stage is coming to a close. What's likely happening is that RED is tallying up however many H1s of each type need to be made, THEN they would do an official production run for the pre-order units. If you switch from Aluminum to Titanium, all you're doing is saying you want them to make a Titanium one for you instead of an Aluminum one, and there's no reason you would have to lose your place in line for that.

The only important thing is that your order gets changed before the production run begins.

This is speculation on my part.

Yes, titanium can be quite a 'boring' looking metal in the raw, but I expect it's going to be far from boring looking once we're holding it in our hands.

+1

I just forgot / now remembered my wedding ring is made of Titanium (D'oh), and has a black surface finish that I really like (so happily re-married) so maybe that's why I'm digging the Back-ish Titanium idea on Hydrogen... (subliminal) I really like the sound and RING that Titanium can have too as a sound... Can be high pitched and tough and pleasing ring to it, so wonder if that has an effect on the audio experience? @Phil H you have heard the 3d sound stuff on H1 ? No ? (shrugging shoulders).

Phil H (or who ever it was that mentioned non-silver surround/ black being nicer for holo/3d (not mandatory) but less distracting/ competing for depth/ view accodation versus convergence for a very immersive experience.

The price difference between Titanium and Al doesn't seem that great... So for some Titanium would be no-brainer... For others where every dollar counts or ordering a LOT of units Aluminum makes sense too.

...So, something like this, but with front and back stereo cameras?

^^^Funny that Christopher Bell has a prototype leather box/pouch/cover for the H1 that has the same accent stripe on it to be unique and distinctive with blue "interior" and lining...

Interesting same design "ethic" and idea for ultimate complimentary "Swag" and "Swag bags" and HYDROGEN accessories...

He posted a pic of that on one of the HYDROGEN threads... Looked pretty slick/go faster stripe in yellow too :-)

As long as you haven't forgotten which day it was put on your finger...:nono::scared::ohmy::biggrin5:

Ohhhh good point! Thanks for reminding me... !!! LOL ! Me is bad (whistling with hands in pockets, sauntering about looking sheepish, avoiding eye gaze lol )...

At some point very soon I have to turn back to reality...

Now that you mention it, it does remind me my H1 case

WOW... I forgot about the embossed logo... Did you make a die for that and heated it up and stamp it/press?

Reminds me a bit of the of the Royal guild for the "Worshipful Company of Master Saddlers" stamp and logo too... That you can find on saddles made by card carrying master saddlers in the U.K.

That blue interior is a nice unexpected twist and color opposite for the yellow band on the outside... Should go real nice with H1 Titanium!

(@CB) Really Nice!

The new project thread was two summers ago, and the patents were looking launched before that. It's still an excellent job. About the only reason to delay going Isis it's 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 vertical color pixel like the foveon, or new Sony sensor patent.

Oh I thought you meant 2 years from now. Tbh I'm surprised that a company with no prior experience of phones has gone from starting a new project to retail launch in 2 years in the space, particularly considering the likely unique nature of hydrogen.

I can live with the black on the Ti that we have been seeing, no idea what material but I would bet for the prototypes its been aluminum.
I would much rather have natural Ti so it matches my watch or should I say most of my watches but this is my everyday https://www.shinola.com/black-blizzard-s01118.html
The Ti rainbow nitride coatings do look nice too
