When you team up, with Apple give me a cal, I'll order a squadron of them...![]()
I wrote this article back in 2010. About A week later I received an email from an HP representative who wanted to talk with me about my needs and how they could fill them. I shrugged it off at the time and thanked the rep, telling her that the only thing keeping me from pursuing it further was Windows.
Even though I brushed it off, I was silently impressed. HP was certainly listening.
I believe that Apple is listening too. I have no doubt that plenty of high-ranking Apple folk read my half-coherent rant. Apple may be listening but I'm not convinced that they're actually hearing us. I didn't receive an unsolicited email from Apple after writing that post. Frankly I've never received a response to any inquiry I've made to Apple's professional team.
It's a shame.
I seem to have a penchant for writing thoughts with good intentions that are received poorly. I'm sure I made no friends at Apple by writing what I wrote. Yet that post generated 1,000x the traffic of anything else I've ever written and was cited in more than 100 different articles across the internet. That's what happens when companies clam up and abandon their closest followers.
About a year ago I wrote a followup to that article which I never posted. I may dust it off and finish it.
Why not? It can't make them any more distant than they are already.
And I bet I'll get another email from an HP rep.
If you wait for Apple, what do you hope to gain from this? Do you think their hardware will surpass what you will be able to build in a PC at the time? Very doubtful, especially for specific tasks like 4K editing.
If you are somehow under the impression that PCs "get viruses and crash all the time", I can assure you, this is false. I have been using an i7 machine I've had since April 2010 and I have never had a single crash, blue screen, or virus.... EVER. Plus I have swapped out nVidia cards three times, added all kinds of drives and swapped out RAM twice, building the rig just how I needed it for editing.
BTW, Jarred, have you had a chance to mess around with the Fusion FX cards? I'm gonna try a couple of these in my Origin PC. http://www.fusionio.com/platforms/iofx/
By putting in two cards (PCI express 2.0) this will give me 840GB of storage I can access at 2.8 GB/s! That's enough space for most editing jobs I do. Should be interesting to see how well this works.
I agree with you Tom and have been there done that. But a lot of us dont want to deal with Windows period. If you wait for Apple, what do you hope to gain from this? Good point Tom. I think the Video card "freedom" alone is worth contemplation. Every new Apple tower that comes out usually offers already expired graphics card from the PC world, SLI isn't even a consideration, and your usually stuck with 1 card with 1 additional option. As these GPUs get incredibly powerful and software starts to maximize this power it starts to become incredibly important to have that slot freedom.

Im pretty sure its not an Apple Fan Boy thing since I know I am one but live half my day (sometimes more) on Windows XP and 7.
Some of us can live with the slower but stable system. Yes stable, trust me I have a few Dell T5500 and a BOXX 8400s that tends to act up anytime they want.
My experience with both sides is extensive and still lean towards the cheese graters![]()
However, it's the fact it doesn't support a thousand cards and peripherals and lots of costum parts that makes apples so stable both software and hardware wise. By sticking to a few proven options apple guarantees performance and stability. Maybe things do have changed and everything is much better on the PC world now, but my previous windows "stability hell" still sticks with a very sour taste in my mouth, and don't want to go through this again. Apple has never disappointed me in this regard.
This is precisely why I'm only contemplating the PC now... because RED is offering us a select subset of that confusing PC jungle.
'Built for RED' stickered or something.
If there's a group of trusted like minds testing out the equipment, then as a community we can gravitate towards the more stable and appropriate gear, right? The trustworthiness of Apple options, but tailored to 4K needs.
