  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HP 820 Tower - RED EDITION

Maybe this is a silly suggestion but if one were to switch over to the dark side and purchase one of these beasts, could special RED protocols/security be created to protect out footage from people up to no good? I have had bad experiences with PC's, and last year my iMac as well but I saved my iMac the PC's when they die, they die and if there is one or heck even two Rocket cards in there, that would be a pricey replacement.

I have the master collection for Mac - do I have to re-buy it in PC format?

Have you upgraded to CS6 yet? I know you can cross upgrade to a newer version if you contact Adobe.

It's going to be interesting when Apple comes out with their new Mac Pro next year and a bunch of people already jumped ship to Windows when they preferred Macs to begin with. Will they jump back?

Not if they are aware of Apple's history.

I jumped and ain't going back.

If you buy from their business sales site, which you can do starting with the upgrade, you can then get licensing and downloads via their Volume Licensing Server and you get both Mac and Windows licenses for each seat. Pretty nifty. :)

Oh and just for the record and to confirm what Mark says, the Z820 w/ the Quadro 6000 is crazy fast. Fucking nuts is a pretty good descriptor. And I know it's not always proper to suggest a "consumer" GPU in place of a Quadro in pro circles, but it's fucking nuts on fire with a GTX 690 -- especially in AE where multiple GPUs are now supported.

I keep swapping between the GTX690 and Quadro 6000 in my Z820. (I hope I don't wear out the slot!). I'm torn between the two as to which one is truly better. The Quadro is indeed slower, but it performs so smooth and doesn't flinch at anything I throw at it. The GTX690 is faster, at times, but erratically so. One minute it's crazy fast, then it chokes and stutters on something the next go-around. Some of it I chalk up to beta drivers on the 690, some to the better optimization and more RAM on the Quadro card... It's a tough call... The bad thing about running the Quadro is I still need another GPU in the mix with it to properly run Resolve. The 690 takes up the same slot space and provides dual GPUs for Resolve on the same card. Sadly, that's my primary reason for keeping it right now over the Quadro 6000. This is not a gaming system.... I don't have time to play games these days anyway...

Multiple GPUs are supported in AE now?? In SLI?

How will the Quadro 6000 compare to the GTX 680 4GB? I noticed when I switched from a 1.5GB 580 to a 3GB 580, my performance in 4K editing skyrocketed.

Also - if you are looking for a small, inespensive raid that can you can hot swap between Mac and PC - this one is VERY quiet - good for on set work - 12T of USB 3 and eSata for $1300 - http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/RAID/Rack_Mount/FireWire_USB3_eSATA_1U

I've been looking at these as well. Was planning on getting a Pegasus with my new MacPro that wasn't released and using one of these as an online backup. But now I might just get a pair of these to use for now. Ordered the Caldigit USB3/esata3 card for my current MacPro.

It was said about a week ago in another thread that those internal REDstations will be exclusive for the HP stations.

But then again, things do change...

Mike beat me to it. I'll be upgrading my system later this year, and I would LOVE to have that combo looking Bluray/REDstation drive. In fact, I'm going to be in the market for a Bluray burner in the next month, so I'd absolutely LOVE to have one of those ASAP. Would one of the resellers/custom builders be likely to part with one ala carte?

Dont worry.. we will be making a single 5 1/4" bay adapter for the RED STATIONs, That actually was my idea. But doing the Dual Bluray and RED Station all-in-one HP gets full credit for.... pretty genius.. and thats HP system only. Gotta love how those guys think.

These 820 machines are pretty quiet as well.. liquid cooled. Not sure if that was mentioned.

Good on you, Jared, for the bay adapter idea. Any idea when it will be available? I'll take it if that's all I can get. But I would LOVE the Bluray/REDstation combo. Space saving, neat, and looks sexy to boot. Are you sure no one can be bribed to sell me just that drive?:-)

you can bribe HP.. it is up to them :)

Jeff Kilgroe,
You mind running the Black Magic Design Disk Speed Test on your Z820?
Run it on your fastest storage system (SSDs, RAID Arrays) for at least 5 min each run.
It performs reads and writes continuously until you decide to stop it.

Get the Windows version directly from here (no install required):

Note: to run it on the C drive, right-click the executable and select "Run as Administrator".

Post a screenshot of the results, like so:

Thanks

Oh shit Red now likes PC's. Time for readjustment: PC is good, Apple is well... was good. That hurt. Must repeat, "Oceania is our friend."

Hi Jarred,
Quick question : USB 3 and Thunderbolt onboard ? (I'm not sure if the Z77 chipset, which allows Thunderbolt connectivity on PC, is available with Xeon compatible motherboards)
