  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How will Scarlet Change your Life??

If the Scarlet will be S35mm and has almost exactly the same functions/features as an Epic, then I can finally say I am an owner of a great digital film camera.
I have always wanted a camera that is highly professional yet easy to use and work with.

But then, isn't that an Epic? I guess something will have to give. The 4K would be sooo nice, since all the other cameras in the line are moving on up to greater heights. It would also kill dead on its tracks any feable attempt from Canon at introducing a 4K camera in the lower price bracket. Another thing I'm currently unsure about selling are my Zeiss (SLR) primes, as they have provided me with some great images in the past. Can the fixed zoom beat the Zeiss optics? if indeed it's a 8x fixed zoom opening up to T2.3, will we be able to achieve a good DOF throughout the zoom range? Someone pointed out that in the Red store, some of the lenses appear with a tick next to 'Scarlet', which seems to indicate we will have a camera with interchangeable option. Another quality that would be nice is to have a sound module integrated into the specs. Anyway, I'm counting the days...

For me, the scalret represents the ability to make more movies at higher quality of output and explore types of shots my current camera latitude does not allow (high speed, raw codex, pro-audio inputs, etc)

I'm just not sure what I'll do yet, must evaluate this very carefully, especially the pure weight of the respective tools. Talk of super speeds for an S like release at $12K sound pretty amazing and even a run and gun fixed unit is tempting and could get a lot of shots accomplished for me. Grateful we are being allowed to weigh our decisions before the Epic price increases. THANK YOU!

This is definitely among the most difficult technical vs. financial decisions I've ever had to muddle over. I shot my first and only feature on film mostly with a Bolex RX5 (and a couple Arri's a few times) and considering the experience, was afraid I'd break my back with aggressive shots using an R1 not to mention I simply could not afford it when it first came out.

What I can say definitely is that it was the promise of Scarlet that changed my life by forcing me to change my approach to post production. The promise of Scarlet and Red's initial R1/r3d file innovations caused me to move away from Mac and FCP with the decision to research then build a PC "super computer" initially for the Adobe CS5 Suite and editing R3d and 4k time lapse files.

Last December at the Santa Fe 3d Workshop, I had the opportunity to ask Jim whether he intended to revolutionize television production with Scarlet as he has done with regard to film production with the Epics. He (modestly?) said he didn't see it that way at the time but I'm still wondering...

No matter what happens, film and t.v. production standards are definitely going up and it is just great to see this happen!

If Red does a 35mm sized sensor for Scarlet I would expect it to be 4k APS-C sized rather than the larger 5k Epic S35 sensor. Same size as the original Red 1M sensor, but MX or hopefully Dragon generation version. It is a sensor format they already have plenty of experience with from R1 that would be less expensive to produce than Epic's and would meet the existing large sensor production camera competition head on. If they can build a camera like that at an under $10k entry price point it would trounce the competition for anyone interested in more than HD video output.

The storys on here are soo awesome!!! all your story's have been very inspiring and insightful, thank u all for participating in this wonderful thread =) We luv u all =)

I agree with everything Sergi said particularly the fixed lens. If you can swing the bucks for an interchangeable lens mount that is the way to go for your future. It's great you've got the money in the bank for the camera. So once you have the camera what do you intend to start doing with it & how? There in lies the big decision but no matter which way you jump I would hold onto that full time job in TV for all the reasons others have stated for a few more years yet. At your age I could never have dreamed of owning a camera with the features & price points that are being discussed here. So good luck, stay sane, have fun, enjoy this is a great industry to work in.

Sergio, thanks for the input. I love working with interchangable lenses, so I do think experimenting will all sorts of Canon mounts could be great fun. Let's just hope I can get an interchangable Scarlet! I noticed you said stills lenses as opposed to cinematic lenses - what is the main difference, and reason you suggest this? I had a look at the Red Primes and they will certainly blow out my budget quickly.

Kacey, great to hear a success story in taking a leap of faith. It's on my mind all the time! Appreciate the feedback. I still do have a lot of networking to do, as well as learning different areas of the industry (such as live broadcast, and shooting serials as opposed to studio shows). And a big congrats on your successes.

Mike, once I get the Scarlet (hopefully during summer here) I would hope to shoot a few shorts in my time off. My goal is to hone my skills in creating shorts until I'm confident enough to make a kick ass indie feature (would also shoot this on the Scarlet). I know this is a lengthy process and could take many years - so in the mean time I would hope to pay the Scarlet off through event photography/filming, small commercials, showreels, and things like that. Going for a stretch, I've got mates who are upcoming talent in Aussie TV, and we've already been discussing filming/pitching pilots to networks, which they would have the connections for, if it ever came to that.

I can see so many opportunities opening by having the freedom of shooting on a quality camera whenever I need - It's just a matter of making the time (with this current full time gig) to try and get it all going.

The Scarlet should make for a tremendously useful tool for our company. We like 35mm as our primary format for larger narrative projects, but plan on using the Scarlet for all manner of different purposes. I can see it being useful as a B camera on some of those projects and as a primary tool on smaller narrative projects and documentary-style work. At present we rent gear as we need it and own a Panasonic HPX 170 and a Canon 5D Mark II. I think that the Scarlet should entirely replace our HPX and drastically reduce how much use we get out of the 5D (at least in terms of video). We are very excited for the reveal on November 3.

4K or 3K makes more sense on the Scarlett because of the kind of company RED has shown to be; 2/3 sensor would be a kind of a step backwards due to future modularity and compatibility issues, especially in terms of lenses. I have prime Zeiss lenses (PL & NIKON mount) that would LOVE to use with the new Scarlett, so it would be a disappointment if I can't use these lenses. Also, I'm really hoping Scarlett delivers on still photography resolution. Nikon's D800 will be announced Oct 18th and will be 36MP FF; that's a little too much, but I will be happy with 16-18MPs.

I think with Scarlet I'll be able to learn to play the piano in three days. Math will become useful. And fun. Even half listening to any language, I will become fluent. I'll suddenly know everything, about everything. My brain will just pouring this stuff out. Everything I'd ever read, heard, seen will become organized and available.

scratch that, never mind. I might have just seen Limitless.

It's all about D.R. for me.

Loved the intro zoom of Limitless...how was that done?

The more I've thought about it lately the more I've fallen in love with the Scarlet, the idea of it, and the doors it opens. I'm sure RED knows this and it's a brilliant way to make money, but it's also an amazing way to allow progress and push the industry and those involved. Not just through modularity but because they can release so many options to fit each market specifically. Sure they cost alot realistically still. The Scarlet is still a good chunk of change as is an Epic X but each is a brush to it's artist. For me I'm really torn at which to get. I was in love with the Fixed awhile ago, still am but I feel limited with lenses, then again it covers a large range. I also like the interchangeable, I love the crop advantages of the 2/3rds with S35 lenses.

But now I'm even hoping for an Epic S announcement. I really think it fits what I want the most, and it would be a stretch for me to start but with the option to choose a Canon and or PL mount off the start I could still shoot pretty quickly.

A thought and only prediction I'll make is that the I expect the 2/3 fixed lens Scarlet still, pretty close to what we've seen. The other thing I think we'll see is a Hybrid of the Epic-S/Interchangeable Scarlet. I think that would be perfect.

Think about it most that want the Epic-S wanted the ability to hit 5K and a S35 chip. Where the interchangeable crowd did want 2/3, but many still wanted S35 and just a cheaper option than 12K for a body without a fixed lens.

What if they released:

S-35
HDRX
4K 60 fps
3K 120 fps
2K 150 fps burst

The option between a Canon/PL mount in the choice of the body when just purchasing it. The old Scarlet S35 was 7500, Epic-S 12,000. I would say for this maybe they could sell it for $9,000

I like this because it gives those who already own Canon glass, I'm one, while they're not the best lenses It would allow me to get the camera/look I want and still shoot out of the box. Not saying it will happen just an interesting thought/prediction. I'm sure it is to cheap, but it seemed like a in the middle price.

And how this all relates to the OP...Scarlet will change my life in ideas, perceptions and ability to grow not only with how the camera has changed, but RED is a changing and evolving company. I think my work and cameras will go along for the ride.

If Scarlet can produce better Blue-ray then HVX 170 Panny I am able to retire hahh hah aah

It all depends on what your plans are. But fact is: though it still is a lot of money for many people, in comparison to what cinema gear cost before RED hit the scene, this is just ridiculous inexpensive.
So for me: this really changes a lot if you are trying to produce professional content.

Think about 1080p cine costing around 200.00$ (or more?), its now cheaper to own a camera than renting one. So it does change the way you are able to produce content. Especially for the indy sector
this is a real break through. Even professional broadcast cameras were/are more expensive than a Scarlet.
You might differ when you compare it with cameras which produce the large sensor look like a 5D, 7D, FS100 and what not, but in my eyes all these would not have happened this early, if RED wouldn't have been here to start it.

Think about Joseph... I guess he wouldn't be shooting in Dubai if he just got himself a 5D. So it can change your life, if you allow it to happen.
