  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How much is the Epix X->monstro upgrade?

The best bet, IMO, is just to wait for Epic FF35 Monstro if Monstro is what you want. That's the camera most of us want ( I know I do!) So just be patient. He's already laid out some incredibly generous offers. Just accept those and be patient.

I haven't intended to post on this thread again for sometime, but I think I just heard a line from Oliver Twist..

Tom, I'm waiting. But out of interest, I think you're confusing PRICE and COST. I expect the largest cost has been physical stress on Red employees (and no doubt Jim), and financial, but anyway..

how much revenue has Jim pulled so far?
how much profit has Jim pulled so far?
how much do the cameras COST to build?
where did you pull the numbers from to calculate that the offers are "free"?
do you think anyone here expects Jim to give stuff away for free?

The best video I've seen, relating to Red history, was Graeme talking about the days before he understood coloremetry, which was when he started at Red essentially. I'll find a link(http://www.macvideo.tv/camera-technology/interviews/index.cfm?articleid=102238). Thats not a dig, it was a fascinating interview with a modest and talented man, and a breath of fresh air.
I had some similar enlightening experiences during my masters, but before I did I used to ask a teacher that was helping my sister out with her school math, years ago, if he understood various symbols in equations I had, because I didn't. He always looked terrified, so I stopped asking. One day he said "You know, you're doing practical math, math teachers don't do practical math". Well we all know one that did make that transistion.. and I expect talent extends to everyone at Red, but still

Now everyone's getting up to speed with designs, efficiency, firmware etc..

Do R1 adopters have to carry so much of the burden of this research and development process, so early on in Red history, providing support through deposits, then into beta-testing hardware and firmware, sending cameras back for upgrades to fix audio hardware, connect idata etc whilst new customers benefit from new advancements and price?

I'll say yes, and I want to, but reality is..

Many years ago Newtek charged me £2500 for lightwave 6, gave me an upgrade to 6.5 three months later, then said I'd have to pay £300 for an upgrade to 7 (fair enough), whilst charging new customers $999 (dollars) for a new 7 license, about 5-6 times less than my small business paid (not so fair, actually annoying). They stood their ground when I pointed out the error with customer 31420. I wouldn't mind, but the software was buggy IMHO (though not compared to Redcine, which many of my clients rely on), and Newtek have never had a dollar from me since. I forgave them for their business short sightedness, then I carried on using 5.5 and 6.5 until I switched products.
I had friends with other businesses at the time who bought Lightwave, and a nice new 3-chip camera for what I paid for just LW. The advantage they had was real, and meant I had to rent or borrow cameras, and they didn't. Thats life, and its pretty easy

I feel the problem with this forum sometimes comes when marketing mantra collides with free expression of thoughts. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everything Jim says is marketing, much/most isn't, and there's no doubt passion++, but I'm not ready to put my ballet shoes on yet, and there's a long way to go before Epic arrives so people should have their say.

We'll see what happens, but it takes more than a sheep dog snapping at my ankles to convince me my options, or opinions need to be penned up. I hope thats true for everyone, its a forum

It does surprise me that the sensor makes up 75-80% of the cost of the brain when it appears Scarlet will have the same sensors in the S35 & FF35 as the EPIC.

With Epic S35 (MysteriumX $28k brain only) that would be $21000 for the sensor which puts the R1 upgrade to Mysterium X at $4500 a complete steal.

Comparing the pricing between Scarlet S35 ($7000) with Epic S35 ($28000) that's $21000 difference for brains with the same sensors but different electronics and features.

I guess I like most people here (from what I've read) will wait it out for EPIC FF35 and have to pass on EPIC X - which is a shame IMO

Well $21000 actually.

I think RED's on the right track. They just made Scarlet WAY better than it was before so now there are some comparisons with EPIC happening. Fair enough but the holidays seem to be stressing some people out and causing others to think Jim is actually Santa.

Tom's right. Sit back, enjoy the eggnog and play with your RED if you're lucky enough to have one. Many out there will have a lump of coal in their camera bag this Christmas. :cold:

But not us. :-)
 
Toms right about the accessories, and if power and Red Raids are compatible with Epics systems (even if a current Raid doesn't support the higher redcode settings), staying competitive will be easier, and the falling pound have less impact on users here in the UK. These things relax me for sure.

My original reason for starting this thread was to analyse the logic behind placing the brains and the sensors in the same module, from a design stand point, and user cost perspective. There may be perfectly good reasons for doing this, it may be the only way it can be done, but Epic X drew my attention to it nonetheless.

Having so many options is amazing, fascinating, and sometimes confusing.

There you go guessing again... or are you just throwing this out to get more info? These assumptions are killing me.

We are doing a lot of unexpected things that our competitors aren't doing. I'm not about to share all of them.

You guys can do whatever you want. I just hate to see people making decisions based on bad info.

Not guessing, just going on the info published by RED.
The bad info would be the RED tech specs?

All we can do is gather the info, work out the message and options then make a choice from there.

From you comment I'd take it that Epic & Scarlet do not share the same sensors but going on the RED tech spec it appears they do.

I guess with all the options things don't seem clear.

Which incidentally is the premise behind your whole discussion. If A+B = C and you've got A wrong then you wont have a hell in knowing C, will you?

And then you insult someone who gives you a clue to the folly of your thinking? The only way you can get away with all that is if you are a teenager... or coming out of long term drug abuse... or watched too many star treck episodes.
 
The problem is that there was so much "tech" info that we didn't have any idea ...

Until we get full info about Monstro/Mysterium X difference
...REDCODE 225/REDCODE 250

etc...etc...etc...

...it's WAY too early...

But it's fun to see where it's going...if it doesn't change :) :) :)
