  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How much is the Epix X->monstro upgrade?

I think that's a fairly wise assumption... :)

I also think that if there ever would be an S35/Epic/Monstro cam, many/most R1 users would go for that cam, and I think that is not unlikely to eventually pop up, as higher DR and slightly higher ff fps + 1k or 2k extra is all we really want after shooting the R1 for a while.

If that's not happening, I guess quite a few will just go for the R1 monstro upgrade when it becomes available.

But this is just me thinkin' out loud with the reservation that all things may change, always, and none of us have actually seen any images from monstro or Mysterium-x

Yeah, what's sort of hilarious about this whole situation is that Red One owners know they're getting a pretty good deal (just the full value trade-in is a pretty good deal), but have no real idea how good a deal it really is because there's no public pricing information on those modules.

Well, sensors have different amounts of dead pixels etc. So a select chip is just coming out of the forge with fewer defects etc. My guess.

Sounds like a good deal with the modules. I don't really want anything shiny on a camera though...

Oh well when can I pay for one.

to be clear... we'll be able to upgrade the sensors in the "Brains"?

So if I purchase a EpicX I'll then be able to upgrade the sensor to the Monstro when its available.

Monstro offers a big step forward so its important to me to have a path that doesn't break the bank.
 
Does anyone know what kind of special treatment would you get as a previous R1 owner who doesnt want to trade in his R1 but wants to buy the EPIC brain on top of the R1 instead?
I mean, from a business point of view, users who like to shoot all their stuff in 24fps or 30fps at 4K the R1 will supply their needs! Yes, you could upgrade the sensor on the R1 and offer a better quality R1. BUT, what are those specs with the upgraded sensor compared to the EPIC is what is really confusing me. I mean, why would you pay 28K for a cam that compared to an upgraded R1 would have no big specs difference? Am I missing something? Jim has posted that the features on one and other will be different, as well from scarlet's features, but I dont have them clear. Maybe no one will know for sure as the specs will surely change :)
But I am trying to make up my mind on a business point of view and I dont have it clear. I here post Brooks fear aswell just to complement the thread.

If thats true, about the sensor, I doubt they'd come "out of the forge" select, that would happen later.
I suspect that sensors, like microphone components and CPUs will get quality controlled after production. In the case of CPUs, defects = resistance = more heat = less mhz, and each processor is rated through testing and sold accordingly. This could be what Mysterium X select means, which might be exactly what you were saying.
Isn't the blackshading calibration used to correct pixel variances?
 
I think Jim has said its too early to be thinking about upgrades, though I'd personally want to know before I committed to any particular camera model, so this thread is probably a bit early also.

To be honest, that's kinda what baffled me about the reaction to the Dec 3rd announcements... the "Epic X" had always been there (for all intents and purposes it's the S35 Epic), and the $17,500 trade-in has always been there. All Jim did was paint it "titanium grey" and throw in a couple of the modules and all of a sudden everyone is in joyous praise again. Don't get me wrong... what RED is offering is stunningly generous... but I felt that way after the November announcements too. What was it about the Dec. 3rd announcements that is so game changingly different than before? Was it the fact that they blasted away higher framerates on the Scarlet cams so that the RED ONEs still have more perceived value? That's just strange to me, personally... I'm a very happy/proud RED ONE owner, but I'm hoping 100% that the new cameras are every bit as kickass as they can possibly be no matter what effect that has on my current investment. Technology improves, specs get better... I'd be upset if the new cams didn't offer more. And with the full trade-in that they're giving us for the RED ONE, I don't see how any current owner could be miffed. But I guess it's true what they say; you give them an inch...
 
I'm glad the question has finally been answered...sort of.

I understand and would plan to pay for an upgrade from Mysterium-X > Monstro no matter what, I just wanted to know that the sensors could be upgraded in the brains ($5-6K) rather than being forced to buy a whole new brain that was otherwise the same ($28-40k).

As Jim's satirical post indicated, this would be keeping with RED's MO to date, but a lot of people were asking the question and I've only now seen it acknowledged.
 
I think the idea is you sell your current brain to get you in reach of the next one. There will always be a Scarlet owner looking to get an Epic brain second hand.

Otherwise everyone is just throwing sensors away left and right. Better to keep things in circulation.
 
Would I prefer to have a new camera ($10.000+) with similar Dynamic range to R1 and better overall performance/design (to me; cosmetics features) or much better DR in my current R1 body.
There is no path (as of now) to a monstro upgrade in the R1, and even if there is, it will never perform as Epic would, due to it's design limitations.
Ohhh I'll wait and see:)
 
My biggest fear as owner/shooter is not to be able to compete with others in terms of "quality" of my own system; sure I'll get hire based on my talent/experience , but will I be able to do it with my own equipment?
 
This is all just incredibly confusing and pretty much pointless. If we have learned one thing about RED, it is that "everything changes." Earlier, Jim stated that the RED One will be able to be upgraded to the Monstro chip. What that will mean in terms of visual quality no one knows. We'll certainly need to have it all figured out before the Epic-X arrives, but I doubt if that shows up until very, very late 2009 at the earliest.

Jim & Red is learning about our needs and fears, I guess it's all relative now, but it'll be clear in time to come and more we speak out the more we'll all accomplish in benefit of all the parties.

having the option to upgrade the camera "Brain" sensor is a big deal
having to sell the camera "Brain" to purchase a completely new camera is a big deal
Monstro is a big deal

I like being able to upgrade my tool, knowing it will not be as good as a completely new system is okay with me if the money saved makes sense and be benefits are good.

I'm still not clear on if you can upgrade or not. I guess we have to wait to hear it from RED.
 
It'd be nice if you could get some kind of discount when you already own a RED *brain* and you want to buy a new one.

Like an old\returning customer or something.
