  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How much is the Epix X->monstro upgrade?

Actually I think there is a discount, as a red owner if you buy an epic x you dont have to necessarily trade in your R1, you can buy your Epic X with the added accessories and keep you R1.

According to the Epic page on RED.COM the Epic-X is for RED ONE customers that want to upgrade to the Epic system. "A full trade-in allowance of $17,00 for a RED ONE is credited towards this special package." So, it's pretty clear you can't get the Epic-X and keep your RED ONE.
 
You can get the Epic X with the free Modules for 10.500.- USD if you return your Red One, or for 28.000.- USD if you keep your Red One. You just have to have a Red One now or before Epic starts shipping to apply for this offer.
No matter if you trade the RedOne in or buy the Epic X additionally, the Red Ones Serial Number then will be "used" and will not qualify for any other Epic X or Epic or Scarlet discounts.

Thats how i understood Jims announcement.

You will be able to buy an EPIC-X if you own a RED ONE and want to keep it (the R1)... but the RED ONE serial number will be marked "Executed" and will now longer be able to be used for further "considerations".

Maybe this is the way to look at it as well,
Monstro will be bought by rental houses, people servicing studios, those doing higher end tvc work and higher budget indies. These people will also be supplying other high end equipment and the price point will not bother them. They want the best.

This offsets the myterium x model which competes fairly well for the low indies, mid to low commercials, eng work etc.. Probably people who will use still lenses , lower cost pl lenses etc.. Really, the trade in is like getting a new camera for free. If you are servicing the studios, are a rental house or doing higher budget work, you are not being worried about the price of monstro version. You cant really compete with these people anyway ... So if you are not in this position already then mysterium x is the way to go. What i am saying is that if you aren't making the money to pay for a monstro version then don't worry about it, get your ultra cheap upgrade.

This offsets the scarlet, which provides the entry level pro market, film schools, low budget tvc's, ultra low features, etc.. and crash cams for the studios...


The company has to make money somehow...

I may be off the mark but its pretty egalitarian when looked at like this.

I'm not a RED Owner [yet].


I was referring to the case when you're a first-time [new] purchaser of an S35mm Epic for example, and in two years you want to upgrade your brain.

In the current RED program this not really an *upgrade* as you have to buy a whole new brain. Which is OK, but it is by no means an "upgrade". :)

So, I was wondering if some kind of discount could happen for future returning customers.

That would only apply for a camera of the same class, of course.

Say, I buy a 2/3"-I Scarlet brain and, in two years, a better 2/3" model comes out and I want to buy it.

Since buying a whole new brain is not *really* an upgrade, a discount for the new brain would be nice.

1. there will be a lot of red 1 cameras traded in will RED crush them aka Sony or will they be all sold in Brazil?

2. Why the X deal only on the S35 not on the monstro cameras. This seems to me as if RED is discouraging upgrades to more expensive cameras... which I don't get?

3. Its a long way till next fall. Maybe there won't even be a US currency to pay with by then...

I'm confused too. I'd be aiming at the Epic FF35, but why no upgrade deal on these more expensive cameras?

Looks like some of us won't be getting the perks of upgrading our R1s (free io modules etc), or the benefits of the modular system (without buying a complete setup), which is a shame, because the sterling is collapsing still.
 
In a sense, I'd say: Guys... Chill!

Keep complaining, but RED has been seriously good @ doing the smart thing so far.
Most RED owners would like monstro.

And even more of them would "just" need S35.

It will be here, in due time.

But keep pointing that out :)

@ the moment, the R1 Monstro upgrade seems the best deal. And Jim can see that.

Not to keep the discussion going and going like the energizer bunny but where do you see the R1 monstro upgrade? At first there will be the Mx upgrade, then the EPIC, so If you see the Epic X thread in which Jim shared some renders, for me its kind of impossible to say no to that upgrade. I mean, he is giving a very generous gifts to all R1 owners! Did you mean EPIC X towards monstro?

No upgrade deal on EPIC FF35? Where did you read that? Who ass do you pull this stuff from? You guys are too funny.

The question here isn't the lovely deal on a Mysterium S 35, which is by all means is very generous. But an upgrade to a Monstro S35, where an upgrade to R1 is the only current option I've seen. :) But of course I may well be way off.

There is no S35 Monstro sensor at this point. When there is one, there will be an upgrade path. There will always be an upgrade path as things become available.

That statement is really awesome in deed. My question would be regarding the time frame in which those updates become available, and the best way to constantly upgrade to whatever you offer. The fact that we know there is a Monstro sensor (not in S35 of course(yet)) that in some way outperforms the Mysterium X and the need to use it on a S35 format is what makes me wonder what my best option is. Although this is just my feeling...

What Sensor Upgrade path for all Scarlets and Epics!? :w00t:
 
so its still very unclear if the sensors in the camera brains will be upgradable.
Please set us straight, will we have a upgrade path with Epic that isn't just buying a new camera body.
