  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Issues

So... can we conclude that it´s better to forget ISO settigs and try to recover the image from expsoure 0 (320ISO) the best we can? Does this make sense?

Sure. You can look at it that way. Bottom line, you have a RAW file. ISO is ONLY metadata. Color temp is only metadata. You got frame rate, shutter and aperature on set - after you choose those - it is ALL about post.

Since everyone is getting new cameras, it will be important to note which footage was shot with "original" cameras and which with "new" cameras. A full blown test would be good...

I feel bad for the LART team now... having tested the "outdated" RED. You guys are just gonna have to do it all over again! :)

Hi,

Maybe LART is part of the reason for new cameras. They were under a NDA so we will never know.

Ditto Jarred... the changes made had nothing to do with LART. They were all initiated over a month ago.

Jim

NDA was NOT from RED.

macgregor -

I just looked at one of the shots. It is underexposed. One more stop and you would have been money. How are you setting exposure?

Shutter at 1/24th.
Lense wide open.

It does not matter what ISO you shoot at. That's just meta-data - sensor gets what it gets based on aperture, shutter.

What f-stop on lens?

Hmmmm .... we have shot VERY similar shots (it's a very nice composition) wide open T1.9 at 1/33 shutter with no noise. Is this shot on a RED 18-50 at only T3?

10.

What doesnt make sense to you? Remember, it´s not the noise, it´s the noise pattern what makes the footage bad. XD

well ... I have shots - Ext. nights - existing light only - Ultraprime T1.9, shutter 1/33, almost EXACTLY like your shot, which we did in Washington DC for Night at The Museum 2 - and I don't have this noise at all. Although that was build 9 - so, I am a wee bit curious on ultra-low light build 9 vs. 10 - will test soon -

MacGragor... how did you process the footage? RED Alert! or REDCINE? Which versions? If RA! did you use DI or Standard? Did you change any settings?

We are all just trying to get to the bottom of this to help each other. I appreciate any insight you can give us to so we can help.

In my understanding i am not processing the footage (for processing i understand varing manually exposure, curves, contrast, color temp, tint...).

When posting this images i left them as more original as i could. Of course if we bring down blacks or apply a noise reduction filter or we play with secondary colors in a CC suite to bring down blue values, we could reduce the noise. But i wanted to test how RED performed in low light situation and what was the higest ISO setting that i could accept in a professional shooting (unless we are going for the new Michael Mann style).

Workflow for the latest pics:
- shot in RED (firmware 10, 4K, ultraprime 16mm t1.9, shutter 1/24th, iso 1000, exposure seems ok in the on board histogram allthough other ISo settings are used just to compare)
- copy CFs to PC
- Open RedCine
- New project leaving all settings default (2K 2:1, camera RGB and rec 709 gamma)
- open files / select CF folder
- Shot / shot framing / fit width (image is resampled to 2K)

At this stage noise patterns are visible, Exposure bar is untouched by me, so each shot loads its own value from the metadata.

- export / tiff / 8 bits

- open tiff in irfanview / resize to 1080HD / jpeg at 90% / upload to ftp (jpg compersin does not introduce any artifacts at this stage)
