  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How much do you have saved so far?

no money saved. however i am getting the s35 the day it comes out. somehow?

Ready to buy now but wondering what camera I am gonna have to spend and loose money on while I wait for Scarlet.:head_explode:

How much do I have saved? $4000. But, I have a RED LCD already and have Nikon Lenses to start with. I can sell some stock in October to pay off some of the charge card expense.

You're saving $20,000 per month!? You don't need a scarlet. Go buy a production studio... lol:thumbsup:

Haha, he didn't say $20,000, just 20K. Depending on what country he's in, that could only end up being $100.

Me, I've only recently decided to get a Scarlet having read the news that Vegas 9 will be able to load 4K Red files. Prior to that I had no interest if it meant switching to FCP or Premiere. But with a bunch of bills to pay and a trip to Thailand next week, things aren't looking good so far :(

The communist regime I live in doesn't allow us to spend per person more than $2500 a year. I guess I'll start with a scarlet 2/3 rd brain, and maybe in three years I'll have a working camera!

So, don't complain...!

Wow, that must take some careful accounting. I live in New Orleans; I probably spend more than that just eating and drinking. Especially drinking.

I have the $4k now! If only it went up for order tonight...

I need to decide if I should drop $3500 on the 5D Mark II for the time being. All these films that I could be making now... At least the 5D won't be worthless when I buy the Scarlet—like a Sony EX1 would be.

EX series

EX series

I respectfully disagree Dave.

I know two folks (one who purchased a Red system, one who rented) that moved back to the XDCAM line.

It's a horses for courses issue, not a problem with Red in and of itself.

They hadn't correctly factored/understood the logical consequences of the higher data rates, complexity in post, and render times.

Your point may be correct if the workflow issues evolve dramatically, but as it stands, for quick turn around (as in one man band, shoot and output a rough cut in six hours all on batteries) the ex workflow is super fast, no proxies, and can be effectively cut on a laptop.

Now you're just not going to get the quality of image that you will on Scarlet, but sometimes that's not the bottom line.

I think the EX series will be forced to come down in price (already has in media) but will continue to be a good fit for the quick turn market niche.

Having seen the Red Ray footage at NAB however, if Red can get data rates in that range in time for Scarlet... all best are off :)

My $.02

If you're in a lot of debt, including student debt, don't think too seriously about buying a S35mm Scarlet. I'm sure six months after the release of the Scarlet, most metropolitan areas, especiall LA will be swimming with cheapo Scarlet rentals. On top of the existing abundance of RED cameras available for rent. Pride in ownership is a good thing, but not at the cost of healthy finances, and not when there's sooo many present and future options to rent for the specific needs of your shoot.

Kinda right, but if it's my Cam I can take the Time I need. If it's rented you have a Schedule to follow or cost will build. I for myself like to take the Time I think I need and not let my Budget dictate that. Of cause it doesn't help to ruin yourself just to be a Scarlet owner...

The waste I was referring to was the $7k+ I would spend on a new EX1, another SxS card and a few, cheap, Kingston cards for non-variable frame rates. If I bought an EX1 now, my funds would be wiped for the Scarlet—where the 5DM2 at half that price, would allow me for shooting great stills now and later. The video would be a bonus and would only be for personal projects (films). I had 2 video cameras before, and the older one always got the short end of the stick and sat in the closet (when not being rented).

I've been thinking a lot about this right now as well. though i don't think i could justify spending almost 3k on a still camera even if it does shoot really great video footage. I was considering the GH1 but the fact that it isn't a 35mm camera bugs me a little bit, so then i decided to look at the D90, which for under $1000 i could get a really nice still camera with 720p video capabilities that look pretty good. But there are a lot of downsides to that camera particularly in regards to rolling shutter. but I want to invest in a still camera anyways so I was thinking that might be the way to go.

I used to be very excited to buy a scarlet, but now I think I'm going to just be renting. I don't use it quite enough to justify a purchase. I freaking love the RED ONE though. The owners in the area are very helpful

Fellas, you forget, for anamorphics you can get another LCD like the Nebtek HD monitors which have an actual anamorphic de-squeeze function. Problem solved, although at an extra expense.

I don't know at this point which Scarlet I want. Ideally I would have a 2/3" model for frame rates and a cinema one for general film purposes. However, I don't know if I should go with the S35 model sooner rather than waiting for the FF35 model. If I'm buying into the Scarlet, I want the best one but I don't know if I want to be stuck waiting with my pair of D90's until then. That happened with my HV20 when I was waiting for the RED One to come out, "Never again!" I said, but it's funny how after saying that it turns out I'm really unsure now.

What would also help is what the mount is going to be like on the Scarlets. Will they be the same as the RED One? If so, I could get the G-modified Nikon mount right now in anticipation. I've also given thought to the P+S IMS mount but I know they'll have to make a smaller version for Scarlet. I guess it all depends on the accessories and other stuff that comes out with the Scarlet.

I shall have soon about 8K USD (about 5K GBP) and then I'm going to try and find 3 other like minded people to chip in same amount (in London) for a Scarlet S35 and a set of lenses (Lomo's or if we can stretch it the Red Prime set or some primes and a zoom). This we will then share for jobs or just our own thing but not rent out. I will then have about 4.5K USD left over for a new mac set up.

saved? How about -$30k from student debt?

KO

I know the Obam-ster has a lot on his plate... but I hope you Americans keep him around long enough for him to get down the list to reforming this student loan thing in the USA... coz sending the kiddies out into the world shackled by that sort of debt is obscene.

and... on that note... I'm going for the cheapest Scarlet... and i haven't saved up yet... so I guess I'm down the list. The Scarlet's for my personal projects and directorial experiments and practice...which i'm STILL using my little digital 8 camera for at the moment even though my company has a Red One!!!
:head_explode:

Most of the time, most of us are just not doing anything elaborate enough to justify the purchase of these cameras. Unless it was pocket change for you.....

that's what I'll tell myself when the time comes and I still can't afford it.

My first post

My first post

Hi Redusers and Scarlet waiters. This is my first post on the forum, although I've been lurking for a few months. This thread about how much we've saved so far has inspired me to post my first post on the forums.

I've saved a little over $7,000, which seems like a whole bunch of money. I guess it's not. In reality, I think it'll get me a fixed scarlet and a few accessories. That's not good, considering I want a model a little higher up the feature chain.

I'm trying to work my way to a S35 brain (which I may be close to already), but I'm real concerned about not having enough cash to get a decent lens kit and accessories to make a full rig. Renting is not really an option for what I'm trying to do, at the very least I need to own a body and some lenses.

What are the "resourceful" folks doing who can't afford $20k for a set of red pro primes? Nikon? I just sold all my Nikon lenses, there was only one fixed 50mm, the rest were zooms and not very good ones either.

Do the budget conscience just keep saving is there a good interim solution to still deliver an awesome picture on a budget?
