You're saving $20,000 per month!? You don't need a scarlet. Go buy a production studio... lol:thumbsup:
The communist regime I live in doesn't allow us to spend per person more than $2500 a year. I guess I'll start with a scarlet 2/3 rd brain, and maybe in three years I'll have a working camera!
So, don't complain...!

At least the 5D won't be worthless when I buy the Scarlet—like a Sony EX1 would be.
If you're in a lot of debt, including student debt, don't think too seriously about buying a S35mm Scarlet. I'm sure six months after the release of the Scarlet, most metropolitan areas, especiall LA will be swimming with cheapo Scarlet rentals. On top of the existing abundance of RED cameras available for rent. Pride in ownership is a good thing, but not at the cost of healthy finances, and not when there's sooo many present and future options to rent for the specific needs of your shoot.
I respectfully disagree Dave.
I know two folks (one who purchased a Red system, one who rented) that moved back to the XDCAM line.
It's a horses for courses issue, not a problem with Red in and of itself.
They hadn't correctly factored/understood the logical consequences of the higher data rates, complexity in post, and render times.
Your point may be correct if the workflow issues evolve dramatically, but as it stands, for quick turn around (as in one man band, shoot and output a rough cut in six hours all on batteries) the ex workflow is super fast, no proxies, and can be effectively cut on a laptop.
Now you're just not going to get the quality of image that you will on Scarlet, but sometimes that's not the bottom line.
I think the EX series will be forced to come down in price (already has in media) but will continue to be a good fit for the quick turn market niche.
Having seen the Red Ray footage at NAB however, if Red can get data rates in that range in time for Scarlet... all best are off
My $.02
The waste I was referring to was the $7k+ I would spend on a new EX1, another SxS card and a few, cheap, Kingston cards for non-variable frame rates. If I bought an EX1 now, my funds would be wiped for the Scarlet—where the 5DM2 at half that price, would allow me for shooting great stills now and later. The video would be a bonus and would only be for personal projects (films). I had 2 video cameras before, and the older one always got the short end of the stick and sat in the closet (when not being rented).
I was thinking of buying a Fiat, but the fact that it's not a Ferrari bugs me a little bit.I was considering the GH1 but the fact that it isn't a 35mm camera bugs me a little bit
saved? How about -$30k from student debt?
