  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How much do you have saved so far?

Still photography for instance.

It doesn't make sense to pay $20k more to get stills photography on your filming camera when you can buy a pro stills camera for $2k. I'm sure there must be another reason I'm missing..

Considering so many hollywood feature films (e.g. jumper) have been made on a Red One, what is the point in anyone going for anything above a scarlet S35?

Effects plates often need all the resolution you can get and more - also, you can shoot wider and reframe in post. 4K projection will also benefit much more from Epic than the current 2K cinema. Then there's higher framerates... i can see plenty of reasons.

It currently makes perfect sense in many cases to shoot with Red One 4K even for standard definition TV output... and that is 16X overkill ;-)

I am at about $3000 right now... I am not sure what camera I will end up with. I want the S35.. but I don't think it will be in my budget. Who knows.. I may get some cool projects that will justify the cost.

Thanks for the clarification :)

I notice also that EPIC cameras show 'anamorphic' in the specs, where as scarlet doesn't. What does this mean- assuming it means it supports anamorphic lenses/optics? does it make a noticeable difference?

what do we suppose is the mimimum to get up and running - if you get the scarlet cinema ($2500), then you could get a Canon EF mount ($200?) and Canon EF 50mm lens ($120).. for a total of $2820!! And you have a fantastic working RED camera.

Forgive me - although I've been monitoring RED since its very birth, I get confused with all the things you need. Am I missing anything?

Also, in terms of cinematic image quality, how much will having anamorphic help? (epic has anamorphic listed in its specs but scarlets don't)

Um, you're missing power (batteries), BOB (I/O Module, although the protos at NAB did show ports on the brains, we won't know if they'll still be there on the production models), media recorder (CF/HDD/SSD), display (EVF/LCD), control (REDMOTE/Grip),...

For the barest rig, I think all you would need is: Brain, Grip (includes power and probably some control, but how long will that power last?), REDMOTE (again, might be able to use the Grip instead of this), EVF/LCD, CF Module, and whatever lenses/mounts you want. Check out

Also note that what we know now is at least a gen old. Things have probably changed - for the better. :)

I got a dollar fifty cents.

That wasn't very funny. Was it? Up late with a fever keeping me up. Tired of watching Firefly on BluRay.

I have enough to throw down for a fixed lens right now. I want an S35 and I can swing it, if it's not as heavy a camera as the Red One..... Probably. SLR lenses to start with, The Redbrick system and charger, either the red LCD or a 3rd party LCD (if necessary) output module and controller. If it's under 25 pounds (and I think it will be) I can swing it.

Hoping, hoping!

I hope its not swine flu! If we all get swine flu maybe none of this will matter..

I wouldn't think its worth getting an S35 and SLR lenses - you'll be missing most of the image, so would end up with the same image quality as the basic scarlet. If you're going for the S35, better to get S35 lenses.

But your average DSLR isn't modular. Nor does it have that kind of video quality.

A DSLR doesn't need to be modular to take good images (you can of course use different lenses). Scott, no one was suggesting you use a DSLR for video. We were trying to figure out reasons for the EPIC; photography alone doesn't cut it since $2k DSLRs exist. Some of the reasons mentioned above by EKI are increased res for re-framing and increased fps, and although these may be obvious, we were wondering if there were any other reasons.

I don't think it's Swine Flu. I am fine from the morning till afternoon, then I just get a little achy. My wife has me checking my temp. It's always right at 100 after the aches set in.

As for the S35. I have to start somewhere! I keep reading the posts every day and try to keep on target with reality.

I use a Redrock Mico with SLR lenses sometimes on my HVX. PAIN IN THE ASS! I once shot a sporting event (FOOLISH MOVE) and the focus on the acromat got jarred out! I ripped the Redrock of the rails and finished shooting the event. When I got home and started editing I realized that I didn't remove the Rails, too, and I have these Long bars in the lower third of the picture. It looks like a POV shot from the cockpit of and Xwing fighter!

I figure that if I bought the fixed lens, I would futz around with it and the Redrock again for that shallow Depth-of-field look and have those massive hassles all over again. Plus, do I need to mention that I'd be loosing a couple stops of light in the process.

Why not get the S35 and bypass the Redrock until I can afford the nicer lenses. It's a starting point. If there is vignetting, I can always crop. It's 5K. Right?

I can always buy the higher end lens mount and rent if I get a nice paying gig.

I'm just trying to come in on budget. Gimme gimme gimme!

Who knows what will happen between now and then. I may be able to afford the nicer lenses right away.

I just want that S35 Brain.

I was thinking along the same lines as you - if I'm going to be spending so much, seeing as its now possible to get that film look for real, I might as well spend a bit more to truly get it. Which is why I'm now considering what anamorphics (RED ONE & EPICS) do to the image. I'd rather save a few more months and get what I want than pay $$$$ and be frustrated. (I have now have uncompromised 35mm film appearance expectations!)

so that means that only the one and the epic are going to have the option for anamorphic lenses? interesting...

I have been waiting for the Scarlet F to come out, but over the past few weeks i've been thinking more and more about what i really want to be able to do with my camera when i get it. This is going to be my first camera so i want something good enough that it will last me a few years, and versitile enough that it can handle whatever kind of shoot i want. The AF on the fixed lens is one of the big motivations for that camera, but the more i've read the more i'm getting concerned about having interchangable lenses and now this option of anamorphic lenses sounds quite interesting. To think 2 months ago i didn't know the first thing about lenses and from just lurking i have learned a lot.

But i can't help but feel i should start with the fixed lens (i don't really have the budget for anything more) and then save up for an epic in some years time. But the more i learn the more i want an epic!

Hi Bob! Let me see if I completely understand you: You are thinking about getting an S35, like I am. Right? Because I can't afford an Epic S35 Cinema (as much as I would like one!). I can live without anamorphic lenses for the time being.

I just want to make sure that I haven't missed an important post somewhere.

Artistic photographers might not need 30fps.

But the majority of pro photographers (paps and sports/news photographers) might find it a potentially useful and lucrative feature. You'd never have to miss a hit at a boxing match again nor miss a celeb gurn either.

No, you can put anamorphic lenses on all of them including scarlet, AFAIK.

The only difference is that the scarlets will display a horizontally 'squashed' smaller image in the LCD. The only feature the epics have is that they will unsquash and resize the image in the LCD. Having said this, many people film using the squashed image and say you get used to it.

Of course for both the EPICS and Scarlets you will have to unsquash the image in post anyway, so the only difference is what you see during shooting.

Hi bigmike - yes you understand me correctly! I am planning on using an anamorphic lens with the scarlet S35.. I too can't afford the EPIC!! I really hope they will add an 'unsquash' and 'zoom' option on all the LCDs- it would be a simple cheap firmware fix that would allow all cameras to show the image from anamorphic lenses correctly on the LCD.

But who knows maybe everyone will change their minds about everything once the final specs come out.

My first DV cam was a Canon GL1. A 4;3 camera with a 16;9 option, which I used for everything I did. You do get used to squish, but once you've got a camera with the proper image in the correct lcd size, your composition improves immensely.

Interesting. This is the first I've heard of the LCD thing. I'll be watching for more information.

i wanna buy scarlet as soon as possible and therefore i am saving about 20k per month but i wanna safe more amount since i am not satisfied with my current savings.

You're saving $20,000 per month!? You don't need a scarlet. Go buy a production studio... lol:thumbsup:
