  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Here it is...

Very snazzy promo. Did you guys help produce any of the footage yourself? Lovin' the ragdoll explosion at :31.

Oh, did I also mention that free is my favorite number?

i might be way off here - but I'm not sure why everyone is so hung up on the lack of EDL support. no doubt Ian will update Crimson to support REDCINE-X pretty sharply after it's released. and the Crimson workflow to get an FCP XML into Redcine currently is an absolute piece-of-piss. Granted I haven't tried with Avid or other NLEs - but it can't be much harder. A few have said they'd pay for a version with EDL support - so just pay for Crimson!

PLUS THE APP WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IS FREE!!!!!!!!!

Ian? Bueller? Anyone?

P.S. very nice work RED. you guys grab benchmarks by the haunches and hump them into submission on a daily basis. i want to bear your children....

It's all footage from Gamer.

While I hope the app will be free [or at least included with purchase of a RED Rocket...], things could get more complicated as third parties charge for plugins.

someone may have already asked so apologies for potentially covering the same ground, will it be a program where I can still access the rest of my computer without exiting, unlike the current redcine. Obviously everyone wants to have edl support, having done a online without a tool to help you select I can say it was incredibly painful, I now have a scratch to do the edl for me and most people on here probably wont have access to one, and even a simple selection tool that takes an edl and only brings in the used files would be great, although clipfinder does a neg select if you bring in a xml, post was one avenue red was let down in the first part of its life and now there are plenty of options but not always the time or money to test them all, hence why the call for edl support, so I will add my voice to the call, albeit a call you guys probably do not deserve or want, its still something the post world like. Still the way it may work with a red rocket might make the tool something more unique and us wanting it to be a digital neg selector is wanting it to be something its not. Either way thanks for the new toy when it arrives.

Redcine you can F10/F11 to minimize without exiting right now :)

I surely hope that purchase of a Red Rocket isn't required, or that's going to lock a lot of people out of what appears to be major workflow enhancements.

Fair enough but for God's sake, let's allow the guys make their announcement and get a few "hey that's great, can't wait to hear more" responses rather than an onslaught of questions, criticisms and comparisons.

If they wanted to tell us more they would have.

Just wait for more info and then we can quietly suggest how to make improvements in future versions. Nothing we say here will make it into v1.0 anyway so let's just let Red do their thing.

Jim

Word. Completely agree.

thanks Jared

thanks Jared

You ask question and you get a answer, damn man thanks, probably so simple and everyone knew, I feel like an idiot all the times I sat here rendering telling people I was locked out.
Cheers

just because WE aren't doing conform/edl support... it doesn't mean we are not making it easy enough for someone else to add it... :001_wub:

YES! Ok, so I obviously need to look into this stuff now. Is Crimson the only one doing this sort of thing? What threads should I look at? From the sounds of this and what others said here there will be an answer. I wouldn't mind having to open a second program which talked to RedCine and then render the shots trimmed and graded from RedCine if this other program were able to somehow then talk to the NLE and swap out the files, or have them renamed and or organized is some sort of magical Staples-Easy-Button way for me to be able to focus on the actual creative job at hand.

Red shouldn't have to do anything, not even RedCine! Does anyone else making cameras do that?

Jarred and Red's approach is right. There are a billion R1's out there, and they are all the buzz... someone will write the additional code and all they need to put out there is the Greame magic sauce.

I hope we'll be able to get XXL curve GUIs which can never be big enough to me, and we'll have plenty of space since we'll be checking out the outcome on a big 'ol pro monitor through RRocket. :)

PS: I hate red, all they do is charge too much for crappy products!! hahaha... relax guys. There were only a few nasty posts earlier in the thread and I am sure Jarred and Jim could care less... must be some frustrated F35 owners or execs from Sony. None of that nonsense will stick.

Looks awesome and userfriendly. Love the Lightroom like approach.
Will we get rid of the nvidia vs ati limitations of the old redcine for pc?
Free is great. Thx a lot.
BTW, how many tons of work are behind an app like this?

It's the August drinking game! Take a shot every time Jim has to answer the question. Better than "Hi, Bob"!

But not quite as good as "Michael" being said in The Lost Boys. If you can make it to when Michael and Star finally get busy in the cave, and you're not completely snookered, you will be by the 3rd act. :)

Jarred I didn't see anyone complaining.

You can't have it both ways - you release a hype-driven promo for a new piece of software but don't provide much detail on what it actually does, and then get indignant when people ask what it does.

Of course this vacuum launches a discussion on what we would like a piece of software to do. That's what makes this thread interesting to me. Pages of 'We love you Red' I just skip. I'm not asking for anything from a free piece of software but you are missing valuable customer feedback if you quash a discussion of what we would really like.

Just my 2c.

p.s. My first Red short film looks amazing.

Jarred I didn't see anyone complaining.

I did...

When I signed up with Red I fully understood the rules, particularly when it comes to new announcements.

Rule 1:
Sit back and LISTEN. At first the info will be sparse but I'll get an idea of what's coming. Only encouragement and enthusiasm at this point as I don't have nearly enough information to form an opinion and start talking. :iagree:

Rule 2:
Let the info wash over you and quietly hope it fixes everything in your life.

Rule 3:
Realize that Red aren't in the business of making the perfect tool for only me, they need to design solutions that work in a very large arena.

Rule 4:
Red will release info when it's good and ready, not when I demand it.

Rule 5:
Remember that Red listen better than any other company in the world and when appropriate, my views will be heard.

Rule 6:
We need companies like Red.

Rule 7:
Red reserve the right to refuse service to anyone with a bad attitude. Never allow myself to get on this list! :out:

Rule 8:
Believe that a new tool will only do what you see in the demo and nothing else. This way I will only be impressed if it does more.

Is this the version for the windows platform? If this is indeed a windows based GUI for XP or Vista then 'tis' very slick indeed! (Mac users may already be used to such slickness :o)

Also if for windows how is the GUI being rendered - GDI+ or WPF with DirectX?

Drag and Drop looks very sweet indeed and the smooth animated GUI transitions work really well as part of the single document interface.. If the app can be configured in multiple document interface mode too that is a bonus for those who prefer managing all of their child windows within a single parent window.

There has also been much talk of plugins for REDCine and support and usage of the Red API and I wonder if there is currently an API for the REDCine app; such that the application GUI can be extended with third party plugins? Like hosting a tailored application window and functionality within the REDCine application itself? If such functionality already exists, which programming languages would be supported for the Windows platform and which for the Macintosh platform?

The thumbnail magnification slider will be really useful for people with different screen resolutions and screen sizes – Presumably there is also support for multi monitor configurations? For those with 4+ displays it would be great to maximise this application across all 4, 6 or 8 displays both in MDI or SDI mode! Also if users have the ability to maximise the main video window to *FullScreen* against a particular monitor this could almost act like a correction output window. (Although I don’t think REDCine is designed to be a finishing tool..)

The search functionality looks really promising! Will this enable users to search for objects (clips) via keyword and the like if there are many stored in the same repository? – Is there currently then a way of adding additional meta-data or keywords to each clip to make it more 'discoverable' from the search? I guess the meta data could include descriptive keywords and stored in the XML with along with the various image and colour settings associated with the clip.. Maybe users could do a little search for all of the clips that had a *Denoise* level greater than 5 or *Sharpness* level of more than 2.. as an example..

I think automation, scripting or macro support could also be quite use full for repetitive tasks but I suspect this might already be included..

A really nice piece of UI development - looking fwd to seeing some of those new 3D UI controls in the next version! ;o)
