  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Here it is...

Will that song play while we work on it? :)

Thank you for the free stuff!!!

Of course what we all dream of is a free replacement for Scratch that runs on Red Rocket with flawless EDL/XML?/whatevers for every single NLE and other apps under the sun... then again Jim asked us not to request a do-it-all miracle program so it seems they are not planning on turning it into such a thing.

Forgive my ignorance if it becomes apparent, but: Will this be geared for dailies on location, testing looks on set, making small QTs or whatever else you wanted to share, possibly rendering RAW clips graded and trimmed down for use elsewhere, that sort of thing? I just need a little help in understanding what will be the place of this program from someone that knows a whole lot more about post than me.

Does that R3D output option mean that it writes to the RSX file only? Allowing a grade to be applied without a render process? Assuming here that FCP or PP will be able to play those R3D's in the timeline with the updated look via Red Rocket would mean that we could potentially grade and output without the need to ever go beyond R3D's. No renders, no DPX's, no Quicktimes. That would be brilliant!

Two more questions. Any thought or possibility of a simple R3D player? Just something that could mount a R3D clip or sequence of clips and play them out, via Red Rocket, to a deck? Just askin'.

Last question. That's August, right..?;-)

so awesome looking.

If FCS 3 looks anything like those...I will be very happy.

What kind of EDL? As I mentioned in another thread, timelines can get quite complex. Are you using EDL as shorthand for a pull list for REDCINE X to pull/transdcode and deliver a second set of dailies based on an offline edit? Or do you really want it to conform 2, 4, 8, 24 or more layers of edits? What would be a good start is for REDCINE X to create a standard structure for a pull list to be sent back to easily find the existing R3D files. And be able to generate a log file to be used by editing systems (most systems support ALE for example). That would be a good start. Other items from my other post:

Harmonize the metadata into standard terms for all NLE systems.
Consistency between file names and R3D header metadata
Color metadata file that is consistent across all RED apps
Support all codecs on export when loaded on system - if QuickTime, then all QT codecs available to the system
The quick marketing video is hard to see exact features, but a project/bin management for dailies on a given project, flags as to which R3D files have been transcoded, what type etc.

Plenty more once we see what it really is...

use it on the front end.....not the back end.

but i agree. edl support seems like it should be there.

I wouldnt want to correct every single shot I do on the front end..

I dont always have a script supervisor marking the takes.
and even then.. sometimes I would just want a random take because of something I didnt see on set.

PLUS. the correction should be done after the project is edited because the mood can change depending on the edit...

REDCINE is an excellent tool and can do great things:) so im just wishing for an easy path....final cut (using proxy) - REDCINE- finalcut 2k or 1080 for the output... or
FINAL CUT-REDCINE-COLOR-FINAL CUT (not sure if that would make sense)
but basic one light in red cine then put it through to color and finish it

Front end grading is suicide for a feature. That is not an option.

I agree that EDL is in fact probably being used as shorthand for whatever needs to be done to "jump from one app to an other with your timeline". At least I know I am misusing it at times.

The holy grail and ALL I really care about (or know to care about) is a program that would let me edit on FCP/AVID/Vegas and "jump" over to an all mighty application where I can tweak the look, nothing but grading. No need for compositing or anything else, as VFX shots deserve a third application and should be done by a different person that specializes on that alone.

Now, I am not "requesting" this Jim, at least don't think I am unappreciative. I seriously doubt that anyone is being unappreciative. Free is "perfect" by default whether people have the sensibility to mention it in their posts or not.

I am sure there is a great use for your new program or you wouldn't be developing it. I just don't see it myself, and that is probably my shortcoming.

I am simply touching on the unavoidable subject:

Who would be best for creating the best/one-and-only application to massage R3D? Red! It is hard not to bring it up.

I bet the issue behing the lack of "EDL" is that those companies who have already achieved it realize that they have something worth a whole lot of cash... in turn, Red would need to spend a boat load of money only to turn around and give it away for free?!

How many more cameras do you think Red can sell? There is a saturation limit and they are probably going to come close enough to it without such a free program.

On the other hand if they bough it with intentions to sell it, you are then talking about expanding Red's operations into an other realm... how fast can a company expand without being torn apart? I am sure Jim knows more about that than anyone here or a combination of all.

Jarred,

First off.. this looks really nice for dailies. Especially rocket accelerated.

I think support for RGB primaries seems sufficient. Black and white point settings would be a bonus, I suspect it's there but it's cut fast enough I probably missed it.

Building dailies playlists looks like it's there... am I wrong?

Finally, will this support ASC CDL's instead of .rsx???? Please? Notes would be nice too.

Amazing how people can complain about free software. I think it's great.

Thanks Red.

I havent read the whole thread, but I dont think people are complaining?!?!
At least.. I know I am not, and i know Robert isnt either..

REDCINE is actually amazing at checking the R3d's and applying a look!
and this new one will most likely be bug free and ROCK! especially on set for DIT's..

I was simply asking.. how can redcine be used on the post end?
At least without using a 3rd party roundtrip program, which for me is cumbersome.

I would PAY for a version that has XML or EDL capabilities!
I would love to one light in REDCINE and then send off to color for a final grade.

Please dont mistake some of our comments as complaints..

I would never complain about a company as amazing as RED, for their extreme generosity and customer care!!

Thanks again Jim and Jarred, I am positive this new REDCINE will kick ass.

I have no Idea how I will use this.. unless it comes with EDL support

No worries Zak... there are tons of other applications out there for you if REDCINE-X isn't for you.

REDCINE-X is a free app.. you guys are requesting features that are not simple by nature to implement, that require a ton of support, and that don't usually come in free apps..

Amazing how people can complain about free software. I think it's great.

The whole free concept seems to have escaped some people here.

Regardless.. I found out along time ago some people will complain about anything and everything.. human nature I guess. I'm sure even if we gave $5 to everyone to download the app, people would complain we didn't give them $10 or complain that we were giving dollars instead of euros. heh heh heh...

I seem to have got myself caught up in a mudslide of nastyness.
I am not complaining:)
I am a huge fan of redcine as it is now.
I use it ALLLL the time to grade single tiffs.

I am just curious as to the best method to use it for the post end:)

Fair enough but for God's sake, let's allow the guys make their announcement and get a few "hey that's great, can't wait to hear more" responses rather than an onslaught of questions, criticisms and comparisons.

If they wanted to tell us more they would have.

Just wait for more info and then we can quietly suggest how to make improvements in future versions. Nothing we say here will make it into v1.0 anyway so let's just let Red do their thing.

Jim

I'd bet on an OpenFX effect plug-in interface.

Which would ROCK HARD.

OpenFX is absolutely our first choice for the plugin architecture... working through a few 4k(+) kinks but it's the current plan.

There will be lots of hooks.. and to be clear, just because WE aren't doing conform/edl support... it doesn't mean we are not making it easy enough for someone else to add it... :001_wub:
