  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDRx Magic Motion

RED is setting a new must have in the digital camera industry : HDRx™
I doubt to see any camera company without this feature (or variation of it) in 1 or 2 years.

No wonder I can't sleep, all this buzz goin on here:-P looks friggin awesome, can't wait to see the big presentation!

At this rate seems like you guys are eagerly trying to get this done before epic ships:-D

This is fantastic!

More photographic possibilities go into motion picture, historical !

Will you invest in researching to get the short exposure BEFORE not after the long one?

The motion does indeed appear very pleasant. Have you tried to test a moving semitransparent object? The point is, if you see somewhat through a moving object, is there any side effect in the background that should remain stationary?

There should be no problems with that kind of thing. This isn't a plug in. It's not drawing these "artefacts". It's simply capturing the light as it hits the sensor at two different shutter speeds and combining them into one image. If it doesn't move, it won't change.

I love it. I think it's one of the most exciting things the Red team have hatched during this process. I can see every possibility of shooting entire projects this way (HDRx™), just for the Magic Motion™.

Can't wait to see this used in some form of action/stunt/martial arts application. It's such an uncanny thing to watch. Between the motion and the gradability of the stream - feels like an entirely new aesthetic has been created.

Jim, simply can't wait for your presentation. Please, please, please include some boring old shots of actors walking and talking at 24fps so we can feast our eyes on what Magic Motion™ does to this? (I'm gonna keep up with the ™'s until you do it yourself:smilewinkgrin: - this kind of revolution deserves it)

heh heh me and Jim said exactly the same thing the first thing we saw it...

It solves the curse of blurry 1/48 shutter trails without losing the feel of the 1/48 shutter. Best of both worlds! A bit of an oxymoron, but it's more like motion sharpblur.

This is getting very interesting... Can't wait to do our own testing.
Jim, when are you going to shoot some drag racing with Magic Motion?

This isn't a plug in. It's not drawing these "artefacts".

Nobody outside Red no for sure the details, and on the other hand, in fact, that's not the point. We know that the HDR modes are not the same as a sensor with 18 stops dynamics and also that there are two, using Jim's phrase, "cojoint" images. For this they need some algorithms.

If there is something semitransparent the very same pixels have a motional and stationary "component", and this sets some challenge in the algorithm design. The odds are high that designing the algorithms is easier if one has a clear distinction between moving and stationary pixels. Notice also, I'm not saying it did not work out, just that it is a case worth of testing.

I'm one of those who tend to rely that the Red team know what they are doing, and if the HDR mode did not work under some specific conditions, they will let us know.

Strobing

Strobing

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious but does Magic Motion also lessen the strobing problem mentioned in threads like this one?

If I understand correctly could you employ HDRx™ Magic Motion if, for example, you had to do a pan which would ordinarily cause strobing/stutter (a nice side effect being that you also gain 3 stops of latitude into the bargain)?

The question is - will most people just leave HDRx™ Magic Motion on all the time if there doesn't appear to be any negative side effects?? It kind of reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld with the no-fat yoghurt
