  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDRx Magic Motion

Great stuff! I'm thinking, why not shoot everything in +6 stops? Us pixeljunkies would be extremely happy with that footage. What's the downside? You know how awesome more dynamic range is even for the simple things such as fade ins/outs when doing composites in 32bit/float.

I don't know if you are planning on shooting any water in your upcoming battery of tests, but Id love to see how magic motion stands up to surf footy!:emote_happyhappy: If you do shoot some sort of watersport test, Id really like to see reg speed frame rates and some stuff slowed down. jus sayin.

Was hoping to get into a scarlet by the middle of a bridge construction project im shooting, but looks like that might not be an option. Build this thang fewlz!

This HDRx™ Magic Motion looked a bit like what we saw in Showscan, a 60 fps 70mm film projection, for those who had seen them.

It is actually more close to naked eye !

You could swing your fingers in front of the camera lens and with Showscan you could see the fingers in the blur , but if you shoot with 24 fps you cannot see the fingers in the projection.

Now we achieved similar results and with HDR also.......

It is a major breakthrough for movie history.

That looks great! I'm a little fried from catching up on other threads, so I'm just scanning posts and drinking a margarita now the the boys are in bed.
Jim: This is premature, but I'd love to play with some of this greenscreen footage to see what I can do.
Will you allow us to try doing keys on some tough shots? Like this motion shot or that semi-transparent object? Possibly some shots with camera motion and markers on the reenscreen?
I do a lot of composting for the few clients I have and I'd love to see what I can do with it.
Oh, and on another note, I'm counting on you giving us a heads up when Scarlet is on the horizon. Won't you? Just so that people like me can get some footage and master the workflow in time for the release.
I have sewing machine leg right now anticipating the Scarlet Fixed and S35.I'm sure Teddy Roosevelt would be saying "Bully for you, Sir!" I sign of now for another weekend ending margarita.

Jim, I am getting the sense of the Epic being the ultimate variable camel hair brush for painting with light. That somehow all those lines of code are transforming the hard "distancing" esthetics of digital, into something intimate and magically human again. An astonishing accomplishment.

Sorry, maybe the answer is somewhere... But can HDRx™™™ Magic Motion could be apply to simulate mechanical shutter feeling ? Like no strobing on vertical lines during pan!

Because Epic will beat 35mm camera right away if it does...

Some idea on what to test with HDRx mode (unless tested already):

1) Flames,
2) Welding with sparks (basically the same as Phil Bates' suggestion of fireworks)
3) Smoke, and smoke when there is light through smoke towards the lens,
4) Sun light reflecting from slightly waving water. That is, bright light spots on water that appear and disappear quickly.
5) Lens reflections,
6) Light reflecting from the bright side of CD/DVD in motion,
7) Probably tough to test in California: sun light reflecting from a bit rough snow field when the camera is panning

Even so a Ninja would have represented the motion better, I do like her much better so I'm happy, hehe.

I do see something Magical, and LOVE IT!! This would be fantastic for slow motion as well in S3D, and those high speed movements that usually cause that unwanted and ugly Motion Blur, and cause Ocular Disparity which become very hard to deal with in post, and not pleasing at all to the eye.

SO LOOKING FOR TO THIS!!

We'll probably have to drop the "A Bit of" from our name when the Epic arrives.

Speaking of which,

Plenty of that here. Any RED team member welcomed for a stay.

You guys just keep outdoing yourselves... HDRx and Magic Motion are my favorite features ever announced by Red. This is AMAZING!

3a) and studio lights unobstructed pointing at the camera (showing lens flare, lamp filament, etc).
5a) sun set with some kind of other motion in the shot, like cars, birds or people.
8) starry night sky with some kind of trees, rocks, or buildings.
9) car mount driving into and out of tunnels.

Magic Motion heat waves in the desert.

Sea surface. Deep focus.

Would it be out of line to think one could shoot with a narrower shutter angle and "dial back in blur" to achieve a wider angle look? i.e. shoot at 90 and dial in a 180 look if you want?
