  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

Interested once the controller/power options are explored more and there are some tests/examples! These look like they can provide a lot of possibilities.

I'm adding a FAQ momentarily that will clear up some of the questions people have about controllers/dimmers.

Here's a test I posted earlier:

I laid out a couple feet of the variable LEDs (set to daylight) on the sofa and shot a quick shot of my hand at 60fps while holding the camera. This is straight out of the camera with no color adjustment. It's perfectly balanced with no weird color spike/shift. It's really the best looking LED light I've ever used. This is with the LLO OLPF.

Working on getting a person on camera today or tomorrow for some more tests so you can see how great the skin tones look. The footage I have shot already I can't post publicly right now.

Working on more.

They are CRI 90 and it says so on their site. They do claim "up to" CRI 97/98 in the ad copy, but that's like when an Internet company claims your download speed is "up to" a certain speed. It's not that way in reality.

There are 2 other problems with those lights:

1) They have half the lumen output.

2) They are 24 volt instead of 12 volt.

This is from the order page and technical specs on their site:

Here are some reviews from their customers:

I would not trust them.

We're looking at/referencing different lights. The violet chip LEDs are the 97/98 cri versions. And you can get them in either 12v or 24v. They're listed as sold out at the moment on the site. And flicker is an issue with power supply, not the LEDs themselves.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all about being cautious or making any claims as to their performance. Just pointing out that we're talking about different products.

And really I was just interested in seeing the numbers for your LEDs. I included the links just to give a reference as to the types of specs and charts I was talking about. I wasn't trying to derail the thread. I'm interested in and want to keep the focus on your lights.

The product I'm talking about on their site is the 120 LED per meter High CRI strip. The only product they offer that is at all similar. There is no CRI 95 option available on the page, but their ad copy does say CRI 97 and CRI 98 while their tech specs say CRI 90. I think the product you are referring to is their 60 LED per meter High CRI strip which does have a CRI 95 option, but they have half the number of LEDs and substantially less light output (and it costs more). As I mentioned in my first post, 60 LED strips are an option if people want them and they will be much cheaper than what this site offers them for.

Flicker issues are not from power supplies so much as they are from cheap controllers/dimmers. The review was for the the controller they offer with their lights.

As I said, I'm working on getting more tests done.

I'm in for 2x D and 2x T. Thanks for setting it up. Do you know the wattage for these?

Sure, happy to do it! I'm waiting for a reply about the wattage. Here's the light output:

Tungsten: 1680 - 1920 lumens /m
Daylight: 1680 - 1920 lumens /m
Variable: 2160 - 2640 lumens /m

5 meters per spool so multiply these values x 5 for total lumen output.

Hello,

Please put me down for 2x Variable 5m strips with dimmer/ controllers

Thanks, Vince

I have made a couple with daylight and tungsten. I used a 12v dewalt flashlight and mounted a pvc pipe in it, the batteries are cheap and run for around 2 hours. It has been referred to as the Striet light. Cost for materials is about 100 bucks with batteries and charger. I used Dewalt because you can go into any home depot and pick up batteries if you need extras in a hurry. Amazon if you have time.

Genius!

We reached our goal in 1 day!

Here's the plan now:

  • I'm going to start contacting everyone in the Group Buy tomorrow via PM.
  • I'm waiting on a couple emails about accessories. Once I have those I'll put together an accessory document.
  • Going to try to do some more tests tomorrow.

We will keep this open at least another day. I think I can get us an even better price if we can get to 200 spools. Checking on that!

I'm also talking to a company about making us a custom controller/dimmer to spec.

Stay tuned...

Woah, you are on fire. :) Custom controller sounds awesome.

Great stuff, thank you very much for doing a gb.

Oh, and count me in for 3 variables.

Don't see me on the list ...2 variable

Hi Brandon! Please put me down for:
1- T
1- D
2 -V
And I guess the needed accessories/controllers, once that gets ironed out :)
Many thanks! These strips will make for many a fun project!

Maybe keep it open for a few more days or a week maybe? - we can probably get more to sign on, and more discount :)

Just a question. you wrote that lumens are close to 2000 per meter. Litegear max lumens is 1200. Are you sure about those numbers?

By the way, I tried Yuji's strips (blue, 12V 5630 LEDs at 1200 lumens) and they are very good. Right on at 5600K and no green tint. Reds could be a little richer though.

Hope yours are better. ;-)

Those are the numbers I was given. At full brightness the variable strip is very bright. Noticeably more than the fixed strips. I'll get the numbers confirmed to be sure.

I'm all for saving more money :) I think 200 is in reach. That will knock the price down a little more. I'm hoping we can get this done fast enough that they are able to get the lights made before the holidays. That's the goal!

im in for (2) daylight, (2) tung
